Book Transportation Network Companies as Cost Reduction Strategies for Paratransit

Download or read book Transportation Network Companies as Cost Reduction Strategies for Paratransit written by Aysha Lauren Elysabeth Minot and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paratransit service is an auxiliary type of public transportation provided for people with disabilities and older adults. Federal ADA regulations require all transit agencies receiving federal funding to provide paratransit service, but the per trip cost to transit operators is extremely expensive. Many transit agencies are looking for ways to reduce costs without limiting services. For many agencies, this results in providing the minimum services as required by ADA regulations. However, Boston’s Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) has taken a different approach to cost reduction by entering into one of the first partnerships with transportation network companies. In September 2016, MBTA’s paratransit service, The Ride, began a partnership with both Uber and Lyft as a cost reduction strategy for paratransit provision. Since the beginning of the partnership, MBTA has been able to reduce costs of providing paratransit while maintaining the same level of service. This report will examine the benefits and limitations of such partnerships between transit agencies and transportation network companies, using MBTA’s The Ride partnership as an example for potentially successful partnerships throughout the United States.

Book Best Practices in ADA Paratransit

Download or read book Best Practices in ADA Paratransit written by Aditi Meshram and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paratransit is an essential service for people with disabilities who are unable to use fixed-route transit. Transit agencies are required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to provide complementary paratransit service alongside its fixed-route transportation. It is expensive to operate this service. Currently it costs San Mateo County in California more than $18 million a year to provide ADA paratransit service for 8500 registered customers, representing 12% of the agency’s total operating budget. With such high expenditure, transit agencies are increasingly motivated to make changes to their paratransit model with the objective of reducing costs. At the same time, it is important that the level of service is improved to ensure truly equitable transportation for disadvantaged people. The objective of this study is to assess how transit agencies can reduce paratransit costs without hindering the mobility of people most reliant on these services. This research analyzes the paratransit operation of a mid-sized transit agency, SamTrans in San Mateo County, California, and examines how other transit agencies are modifying their operations. Some cities across the U.S. have been piloting ride-sharing partnerships as an alternative to traditional forms of paratransit, with the hope to shift demand. The analysis of SamTrans and the case studies have then been used to formulate various solutions to reduce paratransit costs and/or improve service in other ways such as on-time performance, communication, demand management and customer convenience. Finally, each solution is rated on a three-point scale to depict their attractiveness compared to business-as-usual.

Book Practices in No show and Late Cancellation Policies for ADA Paratransit

Download or read book Practices in No show and Late Cancellation Policies for ADA Paratransit written by Rosemary G. Mathias and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2005 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis documents current and innovative practices of U.S. transit agencies in the development and implementation of passenger no-show and late cancellation policies for paratransit programs operated under the regulatory requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). It describes how some policies are administered, the community response, and their effectiveness in small, medium, and large transit agencies surveyed. It examines policies both as a way to improve system productivity, efficiency, and capacity, and as a means to better serve riders with disabilities who may experience difficulties with the advance reservation aspect of most ADA complementary paratransit operations. This topic is of interest to transit agencies that are responsible for providing ADA complementary paratransit that is efficient, cost-effective, and responsive to customer needs. It is also of interest to the disability community and other stakeholders who are concerned about having access to transportation services that are efficient, cost-effective, and appropriate for customer needs.

Book The Future of Disability in America

Download or read book The Future of Disability in America written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-10-24 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of disability in America will depend on how well the U.S. prepares for and manages the demographic, fiscal, and technological developments that will unfold during the next two to three decades. Building upon two prior studies from the Institute of Medicine (the 1991 Institute of Medicine's report Disability in America and the 1997 report Enabling America), The Future of Disability in America examines both progress and concerns about continuing barriers that limit the independence, productivity, and participation in community life of people with disabilities. This book offers a comprehensive look at a wide range of issues, including the prevalence of disability across the lifespan; disability trends the role of assistive technology; barriers posed by health care and other facilities with inaccessible buildings, equipment, and information formats; the needs of young people moving from pediatric to adult health care and of adults experiencing premature aging and secondary health problems; selected issues in health care financing (e.g., risk adjusting payments to health plans, coverage of assistive technology); and the organizing and financing of disability-related research. The Future of Disability in America is an assessment of both principles and scientific evidence for disability policies and services. This book's recommendations propose steps to eliminate barriers and strengthen the evidence base for future public and private actions to reduce the impact of disability on individuals, families, and society.
