Book Transitions Towards Sustainable Mobility

Download or read book Transitions Towards Sustainable Mobility written by Jo A.E.E. van Nunen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-19 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delivering a sustainable transport system is not just a matter of adopting a number of technological innovations to improve performance in terms of people, planet, and profits. A broader structural and societal transition is needed in technology, as well as in institutions, behavioural patterns, and the economy as a whole. In this broader view, neither the free market nor the public sector will be the unique key player in making this transition happen. Elements of such an approach are presented in this book in a number of domains: integrating transport infrastructure and land use planning, thus connecting fields that are rather unconnected in day-to-day policies; experiments with dynamic transport optimization, including reports on pilot projects to test the viability of transitions; towards reliable transport systems, describing a reversal from supply-driven towards demand-driven approaches; and sustainable logistics and traffic management, from ‘local’ city distribution to global closed supply chain loops.

Book The Energy Transition in Transport

Download or read book The Energy Transition in Transport written by Francisco José Hurtado Mayén and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-08-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Energy Transition in Transport: Towards Sustainable Mobility by Francisco José Hurtado Mayén is a thorough and insightful examination of the critical shift needed in the transportation sector to address the pressing challenges of climate change and environmental degradation. In an era where transportation accounts for a significant portion of global greenhouse gas emissions, this book provides a roadmap for transforming how we move people and goods, emphasizing sustainability, equity, and innovation. The book begins by outlining the environmental and public health impacts of the current fossil-fuel-dependent transportation system. It explains how the sector contributes to air pollution, climate change, and the deterioration of urban living conditions. Recognizing the urgency of these issues, Hurtado Mayén explores the evolution of transportation technologies, with a particular focus on electric vehicles (EVs), which are positioned as a cornerstone of the sustainable mobility future. The history of EVs, from their early development to their resurgence in recent decades, is meticulously detailed, along with the technological advancements in batteries, electric motors, and energy management systems that have made EVs a viable alternative to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. Moving beyond individual transportation, the book delves into innovations in public transport and shared mobility. It highlights the transformative potential of electric buses, trams, and shared mobility solutions like carsharing, bikesharing, and ridesharing. The integration of autonomous vehicles is also discussed as a future trend that could revolutionize urban mobility, reducing traffic congestion and emissions while improving accessibility. A significant portion of the book is dedicated to the role of public policy in facilitating the transition to sustainable transport. Hurtado Mayén examines various policy tools, including subsidies, economic incentives, regulatory frameworks, and infrastructure investments, which can accelerate the adoption of clean technologies. Case studies from around the world-such as Norway's leadership in EV adoption, Shenzhen's electrification of its bus fleet, and London's implementation of low emission zones-provide real-world examples of successful strategies and the challenges encountered along the way. The book also addresses the broader societal impacts of the energy transition in transport, discussing the economic benefits such as job creation, public health improvements, and cost savings associated with reduced fuel consumption. Additionally, it explores the specific challenges and opportunities of implementing sustainable mobility in rural areas, where infrastructure and resource limitations pose unique difficulties. The Energy Transition in Transport: Towards Sustainable Mobility is not just a technical manual; it is a call to action for governments, businesses, and citizens to collaborate in creating a transportation system that is not only efficient and reliable but also sustainable and just. The book provides a clear and compelling vision for the future, backed by detailed analysis, case studies, and practical recommendations. It is an essential resource for policymakers, industry leaders, academics, and anyone interested in understanding and contributing to the sustainable mobility revolution.

Book Automobility in Transition

Download or read book Automobility in Transition written by Frank W. Geels and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2024-10-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the automobility regime experiencing a transition towards sustainability? To answer that question, this book investigates stability and change in contemporary transport systems. It makes a socio-technical analysis of transport systems, exploring the strategies and beliefs of crucial actors such as car manufacturers, local and national governments, citizens, car drivers, transport planners and civil society. Two guiding questions are: Will we see a greening of cars, based on technological innovations that sustain the existing car-based system? Or is something more radical desirable and likely, such as the development of travel regimes in which car use is less dominant?

Book The Transition to Smart Mobility

Download or read book The Transition to Smart Mobility written by Leander Kauschke and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-19 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most contemporary notions of the fairly recent concept ‘smart mobility’ portray an imminent transition of similar socio-economic consequences as the shift from horses to automobiles did 100 years ago. Present book thus offers an in-depth look at the variables involved in the equation of smart mobility acceptance (1) and envisaged institutional change (2). Both views are embedded in the Multi-Level Perspective. Study 1 develops a structural equation model in SmartPLS. Use cases cover eBikes (N=537), mobility-as-a-service (N=531), and fully automated vehicles (N=558). Based on the results, acceptance relies on five factors: performance expectancy, facilitating conditions, social influence, habit, and hedonic motivation. Study 2 applies the Institutional Role Model (IRM) to better understand system dynamics. Thus, the smart mobility ecosystem is mapped in a structured manner. It identifies nine institutions, as well as four technical and four economic roles. Results of interviews with experts (N=8) support the IRM’s significance as a vision provider for a new mobility regime. In the end, these two perspectives amalgamate. This opens a sophisticated space for public debate about the commencing transition to smart mobility.

Book Mobility Justice

Download or read book Mobility Justice written by Mimi Sheller and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobility justice is one of the crucial political and ethical issues of our day We are in the midst of a global climate crisis and experiencing the extreme challenges of urbanization. In Mobility Justice, Mimi Sheller makes a passionate argument for a new understanding of the contemporary crisis of movement. Sheller shows how power and inequality inform the governance and control of movement. She connects the body, street, city, nation, and planet in one overarching theory of the modern, perpetually shifting world. Concepts of mobility are examined on a local level in the circulation of people, resources, and information, as well as on an urban scale, with questions of public transport and “the right to the city.” On the planetary level, she demands that we rethink the reality where tourists and other elites are able to roam freely, while migrants and those most in need are abandoned and imprisoned at the borders. Mobility Justice is a new way to understand the deep flows of inequality and uneven accessibility in a world in which the mobility commons have been enclosed. It is a call for a new understanding of the politics of movement and a demand for justice for all.

Book Social Costs and Sustainable Mobility
