Book Circuits Packets and Protocols

Download or read book Circuits Packets and Protocols written by James L. Pelkey and published by Morgan & Claypool. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As recently as 1968, computer scientists were uncertain how best to interconnect even two computers. The notion that within a few decades the challenge would be how to interconnect millions of computers around the globe was too far-fetched to contemplate. Yet, by 1988, that is precisely what was happening. The products and devices developed in the intervening years—such as modems, multiplexers, local area networks, and routers—became the linchpins of the global digital society. How did such revolutionary innovation occur? This book tells the story of the entrepreneurs who were able to harness and join two factors: the energy of computer science researchers supported by governments and universities, and the tremendous commercial demand for Internetworking computers. The centerpiece of this history comes from unpublished interviews from the late 1980s with over 80 computing industry pioneers, including Paul Baran, J.C.R. Licklider, Vint Cerf, Robert Kahn, Larry Roberts, and Robert Metcalfe. These individuals give us unique insights into the creation of multi-billion dollar markets for computer-communications equipment, and they reveal how entrepreneurs struggled with failure, uncertainty, and the limits of knowledge.

The document includes an overview with a model of operation, a description of services offered to users, and a description of the architectural and environmental requirements. The protocol service interfaces and mechanisms are specified using an extended state machine model. (Author).

Book A Review of Transport Protocols as Candidates for Use in a Tactical Environment

Download or read book A Review of Transport Protocols as Candidates for Use in a Tactical Environment written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport protocols are an essential part of any modern data network, including military tactical networks. Most networks today, including the Internet, operate mainly using the transport protocol TCP. However, this protocol makes a number of assumptions that make it unsuitable for use in a military environment, which is typically characterised by data links that are impoverished in some way. This paper examines TCP, its deficiencies and many other transport protocols that are evaluated for suitability to a military tactical environment. Many of the essential services of TCP as well as other desirable services can be well met by some of these other protocols in existence today in a way that is more suitable for a military tactical environment.

Book DDN Defense Data Network Protocol Handbook Volume 1 DoD Military Standard Protocols

Download or read book DDN Defense Data Network Protocol Handbook Volume 1 DoD Military Standard Protocols written by Elizabeth J. Feinler and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of the DDN Protocol Handbook in three volumes is to serve as a guide for those planning to implement the DoD suite of protocols on various computers to be attached to the DDN, including the ARPANET. For this reason tutorial information and auxiliary documents are included in addition to the protocol specifications themselves. All of this information has been collected into one set of documents that can be used as a source book for implementation purposes. This first volume contains an overview of the protocol standardization process and policies within the U.S. Department of Defense. It discusses the roles of the Defense Communications Agency (DCA) and the DDN Program Management Office (DDN PMO) with respect to this process. Detailed specifications for DoD military standard (MIL STD) computer communication protocols, which are required as part of the protocol suite in use on the Defense Data Network (DDN), are included. The Handbook also outlines the role of the DDN PMO in DDN configuration management, and provides instructions for obtaining additional protocol information.

Book Data Networks

Download or read book Data Networks written by Dimitri Bertsekas and published by Athena Scientific. This book was released on 2021-10-02 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic textbook aims to provide a fundamental understanding of the principles that underlie the design of data networks, which form the backbone of the modern internet. It was developed through classroom use at MIT in the 1980s, and continues to be used as a textbook in MIT classes. The present edition also contains detailed high-quality solutions to all the end-of-chapter exercises. Among its major features the book: 1) Describes the principles of layered architectures. 2) Explains the principles of data link control, with many examples and insights into distributed algorithms and protocols. 3) Provides an intuitive coverage of queueing, and its applications in delay and performance analysis of networks. 4) Covers the theory of multiaccess communications and local data networks. 5) Discusses in-depth theoretical and practical aspects of routing and topological design. 6) Covers the theory of flow control, emphasizing issues of congestion and delay in integrated high-speed networks.

Book Information Technology Standards

Download or read book Information Technology Standards written by Martin Libicki and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines information technology standards and discusses what they are, what they do, how they originate, and how they evolve. While standards are important in improving system interoperability and thereby increasing economic productivity, they are unlikely to achieve their full potential due to a variety of factors, chief of which is the politics of the standard process itself. Libicki points out that the government is not likely the best source for designing and promoting standards. He does an excellent job of breaking down many complex technical issues and presenting them in a fashion that technical people can enjoy and policy makers can understand.

Book Communications Standards

Download or read book Communications Standards written by A V Stokes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-23 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communications Standards deals with the standardization of computer communication networks. This book examines the types of local area networks (LANs) that have been developed and looks at some of the relevant protocols in more detail. The work of Project 802 is briefly discussed, along with a protocol which has developed from one of the LAN standards and is now a de facto standard in one particular area, namely the Manufacturing Automation Protocol (MAP). Factors that affect the usage of networks, such as network management and security, are also considered. This book is divided into three sections and begins with an overview of various aspects of communications standards, paying particular attention to the ISO Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Network Layer. Conformance testing of protocols and the use of computers in the manufacturing industry are considered. The following chapters focus on the OSI Data Link Layer, Physical Layer, and Session Layer; management issues in OSI; the ISO File Transfer, Access and Management (FTAM) protocol; and the different environments in which OSI and IBM's Systems Network Architecture (SNA) are defined. Message-handling protocols, the CCITT Recommendation X.25, and high-level protocols on Ethernet are also described. This monograph will be of interest to professionals in the field of computer science.
