Book Engineering Magnetohydrodynamics

Download or read book Engineering Magnetohydrodynamics written by George W. Sutton and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2006-07-07 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in engineering, this text introduces the concepts of plasma physics and magnetohydrodynamics from a physical viewpoint. The first section of the three-part treatment deals mainly with the properties of ionized gases in magnetic and electric fields, essentially following the microscopic viewpoint. An introduction surveys the concepts of ionized gases and plasmas, together with a variety of magnetohydrodynamic regimes. A review of electromagnetic field theory follows, including motion of an individual charged particle and derivations of drift motions and adiabatic invariants. Additional topics include kinetic theory, derivation of electrical conductivity, development of statistical mechanics, radiation from plasma, and plasma wave motion. Part II addresses the macroscopic motion of electrically conducting compressible fluids: magnetohydrodynamic approximations; description of macroscopic fluid motions; magnetohydrodynamic channel flow; methods of estimating channel-flow behavior; and treatment of magnetohydrodynamic boundary layers. Part III draws upon the material developed in previous sections to explore applications of magnetohydrodynamics. The text concludes with a series of problems that reinforce the teachings of all three parts.

Book Wave Propagation in a Warm Magnetoplasma with Coulomb Interactions

Download or read book Wave Propagation in a Warm Magnetoplasma with Coulomb Interactions written by Robert J. Papa and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electromagnetic waves propagating through partially ionized gases can be severely attenuated and suffer distortion. This has important consequences in the design of any communication and radar system in which waves must propagate through an intervening plasma medium, such as in reentry communications and ionospheric propagation. In this report, formulas are derived that can predict such wave attenuation characteristics more accurately and for a wider range of plasma conditions than already existing theories. The conventional Appleton-Hartree equation used in ionospheric propagation studies gives the index of refraction of a wave travelling through a plasma in a magnetic field in terms of the properties of the plasma. This conventional Appleton-Hartree formula neglects important effects such as the random thermal motion of the particles, which can cause nonlocal effects. Also, the energy dependence of the electron-neutral collision frequency can alter the nature of the wave attenuation process. In the report, a generalization of the Appleton-Hartree equation is made to include these effects. A kinetic equation is solved which includes the effects of energy-dependent electron-neutral collisions, Coulomb encounters and spatial dispersion. The perturbation method used in solving the kinetic equation assumes that the effects of electron-neutral collisions and Coulomb encounters are dominant, and spatial dispersion effects are weak.

Book Foundations of Plasma Physics for Physicists and Mathematicians

Download or read book Foundations of Plasma Physics for Physicists and Mathematicians written by G. J. Pert and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-03-29 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive textbook on the foundational principles of plasmas, including material on advanced topics and related disciplines such as optics, fluid dynamics, and astrophysics Foundations of Plasma Physics for Physicists and Mathematicians covers the basic physics underlying plasmas and describes the methodology and techniques used in both plasma research and other disciplines such as optics and fluid mechanics. Designed to help readers develop physical understanding and mathematical competence in the subject, this rigorous textbook discusses the underlying theoretical foundations of plasma physics as well as a range of specific problems, focused on those principally associated with fusion. Reflective of the development of plasma physics, the text first introduces readers to the collective and collisional behaviors of plasma, the single particle model, wave propagation, the kinetic effects of gases and plasma, and other foundational concepts and principles. Subsequent chapters cover topics including the hydrodynamic limit of plasma, ideal magneto-hydrodynamics, waves in MHD plasmas, magnetically confined plasma, and waves in magnetized hot and cold plasma. Written by an acknowledged expert with more than five decades’ active research experience in the field, this authoritative text: Identifies and emphasizes the similarities and differences between plasmas and fluids Describes the different types of interparticle forces that influence the collective behavior of plasma Demonstrates and stresses the importance of coherent and collective effects in plasma Contains an introduction to interactions between laser beams and plasma Includes supplementary sections on the basic models of low temperature plasma and the theory of complex variables and Laplace transforms Foundations of Plasma Physics for Physicists and Mathematicians is the ideal textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in plasma physics, and a valuable compendium for physicists working in plasma physics and fluid mechanics.
