Download or read book The Box written by Marc Levinson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 1956, a refitted oil tanker carried fifty-eight shipping containers from Newark to Houston. From that modest beginning, container shipping developed into a huge industry that made the boom in global trade possible. The Box tells the dramatic story of the container's creation, the decade of struggle before it was widely adopted, and the sweeping economic consequences of the sharp fall in transportation costs that containerization brought about. But the container didn't just happen. Its adoption required huge sums of money, both from private investors and from ports that aspired to be on the leading edge of a new technology. It required years of high-stakes bargaining with two of the titans of organized labor, Harry Bridges and Teddy Gleason, as well as delicate negotiations on standards that made it possible for almost any container to travel on any truck or train or ship. Ultimately, it took McLean's success in supplying U.S. forces in Vietnam to persuade the world of the container's potential. Drawing on previously neglected sources, economist Marc Levinson shows how the container transformed economic geography, devastating traditional ports such as New York and London and fueling the growth of previously obscure ones, such as Oakland. By making shipping so cheap that industry could locate factories far from its customers, the container paved the way for Asia to become the world's workshop and brought consumers a previously unimaginable variety of low-cost products from around the globe. Published in hardcover on the fiftieth anniversary of the first container voyage, this is the first comprehensive history of the shipping container. Now with a new chapter, The Box tells the dramatic story of how the drive and imagination of an iconoclastic entrepreneur turned containerization from an impractical idea into a phenomenon that transformed economic geography, slashed transportation costs, and made the boom in global trade possible.

Download or read book EU Competition Law applicable to liner shipping and seaports written by Philippe Corruble and published by Bruylant. This book was released on 2021-03-04 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In twenty years, the globalization of trade has led to a change in scale that has upset the balance of power between the players in online containerized maritime transport and the logistics chain passing through European seaports. Three global shipping alliances dominate 90% of online containerized maritime transport, while further integrating port activities. Twelve Asian ports, eight of which are Chinese, are now among the top fifteen in the world. At the same time, Chinese interests, supported by public authorities and resources, are taking control of terminals and port companies in Europe, as part of the geopolitical project of the New Silk Roads. This economic and industrial context is emblematic of the challenges facing European competition law, which has so far accompanied rather than controlled these transformations. European competition rules will have to be mobilized in a global context, alongside the new rules on the control of foreign direct investment. This study takes stock of the new regulatory challenges in this sector of prime importance for the Union.

Book excerpt: Bibliographic Guide to Refrigeration 1965-1968 is a bibliographic guide to all the documents abstracted in the International Institute of Refrigeration Bulletin during the period 1965-1968. The references include nearly 7,000 reports, articles, and communications, classified according to subjects, and followed by a listing of books. This book is divided into 10 parts and begins with a listing of references on thermodynamics, heat transfer, and other basic physical phenomena relating to refrigeration, including desiccation and measurements of temperature, humidity, and pressure. The next sections are devoted to the physics of low temperatures and cryogenics; production and distribution of cold; refrigerating plants (mainly in the food domain); and refrigerated transport and packaging. Other references deal with air conditioning and heat pumps; and industrial, biological, medical, and agricultural applications of refrigeration. The final section focuses on standards and regulations, economics and statistics, and education and trade activities in the refrigeration industry. This guide is intended to assist researchers, engineers, manufacturers, and operators who are in either constant or occasional contact with the refrigeration domain.

Download or read book Maritime Networks written by César Ducruet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maritime transport is one of the most ancient supports to human interactions across history and it still supports more than 90% of world trade volumes today. The changing connectivity of maritime networks is of crucial importance to port, transport, and economic development and planning. The way ports, terminals, but also cities, regions and countries, are connected with each other through maritime flows is not well-known and difficult to represent and measure, even for the transport actors themselves. There is a strong, urgent need for reviewing the relevant theories, concepts, methods, and sources that can be mobilized for the analysis of maritime networks. With contributions from reputable scholars from all over the world, this book investigates the analysis of maritime flows and networks from diverse disciplinary angles going across archaeology, history, geography, regional science, economics, mathematics, physics, and computer sciences. Based on a vast array of methods, such as Geographical Information Systems (GIS), spatial analysis, complex networks, modelling, and simulation, it addresses several crucial issues related with port hierarchy; route density; modal interdependency; network robustness and vulnerability; traffic concentration and seasonality; technological change and urban/regional economic development. This book examines new evidence about how socio-economic trends are reflected (but also influenced) by maritime flows and networks, and about the way this knowledge can support and enhance decision-making in relation to the development of ports, supply chains, and transport networks in general. This book is an ideal companion to anyone interested in the network analysis of transport systems and economic systems in general, as well as the effective ways to analyse large datasets to answer complex issues in transportation and socio-economic development.

Download or read book Transport and Logistics Planning and Optimization written by Boukachour, Jaouad and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2023-07-10 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Logistics and transportation are a complex set of entities and systems interconnected by many physical, financial, and information flows, and, as with all systems, there are optimization and planning issues. In addition, they are subject to economic, social, and especially environmental pressures with the need to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. There is a need for original research to address these issues. Transport and Logistics Planning and Optimization addresses selected transportation and logistics problems at the strategic, tactical, and operational levels in a multidisciplinary approach, not only from a technological perspective but also from a social science perspective. Covering key topics such as supply chain, urban transportation, artificial intelligence, and computer science, this premier reference source is ideal for policymakers, industry professionals, researchers, academicians, scholars, instructors, and students.

Download or read book Maritime Ports Supply Chains and Logistics Corridors written by Cyrille Bertelle and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to highlight the interrelations between maritime ports, supply chains and logistics. Inland corridors could be defined as major arteries for inland transportation from and to the maritime port. They link together one or several ports located on the maritime range with one or several major inland metropolitan areas. The efficiency of international supply chains depends not only on the smooth operations in the port but also on the efficiency of inland distribution in terms of cost, reliability, added value services for the goods, safety and finally the environment. With contributions from international experts, the book offers a transversal perspective on logistics corridor development using case studies on the Seine Axis, among others. Organized into four key sections, the book highlights the interrelations between ports and corridors using both empirical and theoretical research from various disciplines, including engineering as well as human and social sciences. Maritime Ports,Supply Chains and Logistics Corridors will be directly relevant to a wide variety of scholars and postgraduate researchers in the fields of transport studies and management, maritime logistics, supply chain management and international logistics as well as industrial engineering, geography, economics and political science.
