Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rates of organ donation lag far behind the increasing need. At the start of 2006, more than 90,000 people were waiting to receive a solid organ (kidney, liver, lung, pancreas, heart, or intestine). Organ Donation examines a wide range of proposals to increase organ donation, including policies that presume consent for donation as well as the use of financial incentives such as direct payments, coverage of funeral expenses, and charitable contributions. This book urges federal agencies, nonprofit groups, and others to boost opportunities for people to record their decisions to donate, strengthen efforts to educate the public about the benefits of organ donation, and continue to improve donation systems. Organ Donation also supports initiatives to increase donations from people whose deaths are the result of irreversible cardiac failure. This book emphasizes that all members of society have a stake in an adequate supply of organs for patients in need, because each individual is a potential recipient as well as a potential donor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cover of this book depicts a Lamassu, one of the "fabulous" beasts of mythology [1]. Like many similar creatures, such as the Chimera, Griffon, Hippocamp, and Cockatrice, the body of the Lamassu was clearly a combination of structures derived from sev eral different species - in other words, it provides a highly success ful example of xenotransplantation. But in selecting a symbol of xenotransplantation to grace the cover of this volume, why choose the Lamassu in preference to the other ancient beasts? The reason is that the Lamassu appears to have been endowed with a much Fig. I. Homer described the Chimera as consisting of a lion's foreparts, a goat in the middle, and a serpent's hind parts VIII Foreword Fig. 2. The Griffon had the foreparts of an eagle, and the rear, tail, and hindlegs of a lion. Its eagle-like head had pointed, upstanding ears like those of an ass. Feathers grew upon its head, neck and chest, and the rest of its body was covered in leonine fur more benign and desirable character than many of its mythologi cal associates. For example, reliable reports state that the Chimera (Fig. 1) hitherto the animal most commonly selected to symbolize xenografting - killed everyone who came within range of its fiery breath. Perhaps not surprisingly, therefore, the Chimera is vari ously described as one of the "largest monsters ever born," a "sav age creature," and a "symbol of complex evil.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the common principles of morality and ethics derived from divinely endowed intuitive reason through the creation of al-fitr' a (nature) and human intellect (al-‘aql). Biomedical topics are presented and ethical issues related to topics such as genetic testing, assisted reproduction and organ transplantation are discussed. Whereas these natural sources are God’s special gifts to human beings, God’s revelation as given to the prophets is the supernatural source of divine guidance through which human communities have been guided at all times through history. The second part of the book concentrates on the objectives of Islamic religious practice – the maqa' sid – which include: Preservation of Faith, Preservation of Life, Preservation of Mind (intellect and reason), Preservation of Progeny (al-nasl) and Preservation of Property. Lastly, the third part of the book discusses selected topical issues, including abortion, assisted reproduction devices, genetics, organ transplantation, brain death and end-of-life aspects. For each topic, the current medical evidence is followed by a detailed discussion of the ethical issues involved.

Book Organ and Tissue Donation for Transplantation

Download or read book Organ and Tissue Donation for Transplantation written by Jeremy R. Chapman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-06-27 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Organ and Tissue Donation for Transplantation' is a unique book bringing together detailed analyses of the problems surrounding organ and tissue donation. The increasing number of organs that can be transplanted and the rising number of patients on waiting lists have reached the point where availability of organ donors has surpassed the immunological problems as the major challenge for transplantation. In direct response to these problems, this book addresses all aspects of organ and tissue donation and the methods used to increase donation. 'Organ and Tissue Donation for Transplantation' examines the many different approaches, both at legislative and individual levels, to improve donor rates. The inclusion of a technical section considers the practical aspects of donation and testing to prevent the transmission of disease for living organ donation, cadaver organ donation and tissue and bone marrow donation. Legal and social aspects are considered extensively, as are the various strategies used around the world to increase organ donation, from the United States and Australia, to Spain and the rest of Europe. This book will prove to be an invaluable guide for all transplant co-ordinators, organ procurement agencies, transplant units and intensive care units where knowledge of organ and tissue donation is required.

Book Organ and Tissue Transplantation

Download or read book Organ and Tissue Transplantation written by David Price and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organ transplantation has been one of the miracles of modern-day medicine but, in addition to presenting enormous technical and clinical challenges, it throws up major ethical and legal issues principally from the perspective of the donor. Evolving capabilities in the spheres of both organ and tissue transplantation, coupled with rapidly-escalating demand, assert consistent and critical pressure on our ethical and legal principles and frameworks, including the expansion of the potential donor pool beyond the conventional categories of donor. This volume brings together seminal papers analyzing such matters in the context of an ever-increasingly important area of clinical practice.

Download or read book A Gift of Life written by R.Y. Carne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few years the transplantation of organs in man has received publicity unprecedented in medical history. The first heart grafts were covered by press, radio, and television on a scal~ equiva lent to the news of the outbreak of a major war. Unwarranted and extravagant optimism has been followed by bitter criticism. This has undermined public confidence in the medical profession and seriously impeded progress in an important endeavour aimed at reducing human suffering. This unfortunate situation has arisen from widespread ignorance amongst the public and the medical profession of the background, present achievements, and future potential of organ grafting. Short statements by experts, frequently misquoted or cut short by television interviewers, and misinformed derogatory pronouncements by prejudiced medically qualified men, with no knowledge of the field, have produced a sorry state of confusion. It is the purpose of this book to attempt to clarify organ transplantation. The principles of organ transplantation are common to all organs but I will confine most of the discussion to transplantation of four vital organs, namely the kidney, liver, heart, and lung. Book Legislative Responses to Organ Transplantation

Download or read book Legislative Responses to Organ Transplantation written by World Health Organization and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organ transplantation has, over a period of a few decades, evolved from a daring experimental medical procedure to a widely used health technology. Many lives have been saved, and the quality of life of many other persons has been immeasurably improved. There is now an abundant literature on the medical aspects of transplantation, and an increasing number of books on the legal and ethical aspects -- aspects with which WHO has been concerned since the World Health Assembly first took up the matter in 1986. This book is the first global collection of laws and regulations dealing with organ transplantation. Also included are the texts of some of the key international and European declarations and statements on the subject. Most of the materials that appear in the book were originally published in the WHO's International Digest of Health Legislation, but have never been collected in one volume before. This book will be useful to parliamentarians, health policy makers, surgeons and other health professionals involved in transplantation, transplant coordinators, ethicists, and others interested in in-depth information on how different governments and institutions have responded to the considerable ethical, legal and policy challenges posed by this important branch of curative medicine.

Book The Origins of Organ Transplantation

Download or read book The Origins of Organ Transplantation written by Thomas Schlich and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates a crucial-but forgotten-episode in the history of medicine. In it, Thomas Schlich systematically documents and analyzes the earliest clinical and experimental organ transplant surgeries. In so doing he lays open the historical origins of modern transplantation, offering a new and original analysis of its conceptual basis within a broader historical context. This first comprehensive account of the birth of modern transplant medicine examines how doctors and scientists between 1880 and 1930 developed the technology and rationale for performing surgical organ replacement within the epistemological and social context of experimental university medicine. The clinical application of organ replacement, however, met with formidable obstacles even as the procedure became more widely recognized. Schlich highlights various attempts to overcome these obstacles, including immunological explanations and new technologies of immune suppression, and documents the changes in surgical technique and research standards that led to the temporary abandonment of organ transplantation by the 1930s. Thomas Schlich is professor and Canada Research Chair in the History of Medicine at McGill University.

Book History Of Organ And Cell Transplantation

Download or read book History Of Organ And Cell Transplantation written by Nadey S Hakim and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-03-12 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organ transplantation is the greatest therapeutic advancement of the second half of the 20th century. Of all medical specialities, the pioneers of transplantation make up the largest number of experts awarded with, or nominated for the Nobel Prize.Over the years, transplantation has fascinated the scientific community as well as the general public for a variety of reasons:• The development of transplantation has involved almost all medical specialities. In the history of medicine, there is perhaps no other example of such extensive co-operation and exchange of knowledge and experience among basic scientists, surgeons and physicians in achieving a common goal.• The progress of transplantation has forced doctors to “rewrite” medical textbooks dealing with a great spectrum of post-transplantation issues, such as the physiology of transplanted organs, the recurrence of initial disease in the transplanted organs, and the complications arising from immunosuppressive drugs, infectious diseases and cancer. Other issues raised concern maternity, child development, geriatric medicine and ethical issues. However, the history of this amazing field of modern medicine has never been thoroughly reported in a detailed textbook. History of Organ and Cell Transplantation covers this area of modern literature. It includes a foreword written by Lady Jean Medawar who is the wife of the late Sir Peter Medawar, Nobel Prize winner and first president of the International Transplantation Society.
