Download or read book The Science and Art of Dental Ceramics Volume I written by John W. McLean and published by Quintessenz Verlag. This book was released on 2019-09-11 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a no more rewarding experience in restorative dentistry than to duplicate to perfection the colour, texture and surface anatomy of the human tooth. Dental porcelain is the closest match to tooth enamel of all our restorative materials but is perhaps the most difficult to use in dental practice. A study of the science of dental porcelain will enable the dentist or technician to perfect his art since it develops an increasing awareness of the fundamental problems in construction. Preparation design, the stresses developing in porcelain restorations, the influence of opaque backgrounds on colour, surface reflectivity and light transmission in crowns are some of the complex factors that influence the success of a porcelain veneer restoration. A survey of metals, bonding systems, cements and impression materials will enable the clinician to select his materials with greater confidence. New research on the shoulder preparation for the veneer crown also sheds light on the controversy of the bevel versus the butt joint. The author has attempted to rationalise the use of both metal and alumina reinforced ceramics and to show how no ingle system can be applied universally if optimum aesthetics is to be achieved.
Download or read book Fluoride in Drinking Water written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-01-22 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people associate fluoride with the practice of intentionally adding fluoride to public drinking water supplies for the prevention of tooth decay. However, fluoride can also enter public water systems from natural sources, including runoff from the weathering of fluoride-containing rocks and soils and leaching from soil into groundwater. Fluoride pollution from various industrial emissions can also contaminate water supplies. In a few areas of the United States fluoride concentrations in water are much higher than normal, mostly from natural sources. Fluoride is one of the drinking water contaminants regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) because it can occur at these toxic levels. In 1986, the EPA established a maximum allowable concentration for fluoride in drinking water of 4 milligrams per liter, a guideline designed to prevent the public from being exposed to harmful levels of fluoride. Fluoride in Drinking Water reviews research on various health effects from exposure to fluoride, including studies conducted in the last 10 years.

Download or read book Color and Appearance in Dentistry written by Alvaro Della Bona and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-03 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the state of the art in color science and explains its application to dental structures and materials, using high-quality illustrations to ensure ease of learning. Most people seek a bright smile with a natural appearance. This goal often poses a great clinical challenge for the dentist, and its achievement is dependent on a good knowledge of color science and optical properties relevant to dentistry. Further, if a smile is to be esthetically improved to the patient’s satisfaction, the dentist must be able to extract the best from dental materials and techniques, must understand all aspects of facial harmony, and must communicate effectively with both the patient and lab technicians. All of these aspects are thoroughly explored in the book, with detailed coverage of such topics as visual and instrumental shade matching, color management, and avoidance of complications and pitfalls. Color and Appearance in Dentistry will be of high value to all who are engaged in the daily practice of esthetic dentistry.

Download or read book Development Function and Evolution of Teeth written by Mark F. Teaford and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this field there has been an explosion of information generated by scientific research. One of the beneficiaries of this has been the study of morphology, where new techniques and analyses have led to insights into a wide range of topics. Advances in genetics, histology, microstructure, biomechanics and morphometrics have allowed researchers to view teeth from alternative perspectives. However, there has been little communication between researchers in the different fields of dental research. This book brings together overviews on a wide range of dental topics linking genes, molecules and developmental mechanisms within an evolutionary framework. Written by the leading experts in the field, this book will stimulate co-operative research in fields as diverse as paleontology, molecular biology, developmental biology and functional morphology.

Download or read book Biominerals written by F.C.M. Driessens and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-09-26 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive analysis of biominerals, in particular phosphates and carbonates of calcium. The book begins with a discussion of the theories of solid state chemistry and thermodynamics of ionic solid solutions and applies these theories to show how physiological constituents like sodium, magnesium, carbonate, chloride, fluoride, lead, or strontium influence the formation, stability, and solubility of calcium phosphates. The results of this discussion are then applied to a critical evaluation of data regarding minerals in bone, dentin, and tooth enamel, their formation during growth and turn-over, their stability under physiological conditions and their breakdown under pathological conditions. These principles are also applied to pathological calcifications such as renal calculi, arterial wall calcifications, chondrocalcinosis, dental calculus and salivary stones. A similar approach is used as the authors discuss carbonations such as calcite, dolomite, and aragonite. The book also includes an extensive analysis of the advantageous effects of magnesium supplementation. The wealth of knowledge in this extensive treatise of biominerals is valuable to medical, dental and ecological biologists, as well as scientists and clinicians in the fields of osteoporosis, bone diseases, caries, renal stone disease, parodontology and nutrition.
