Book Verse Translations From Classic Authors Classic Reprint

Download or read book Verse Translations From Classic Authors Classic Reprint written by C. E. F. Starkey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Verse Translations From Classic Authors It is an instructive fact that the French word "traduire," "to translate," is derived from "traducere," a word which has as a secondary meaning "to ridicule" or "misrepresent," while the English form, "traduce," has a still uglier signification. To translate must always be to traduce to a greater or less degree; either spirit or letter must be more or less lost in the process, even in the most perfect translation. Every language possesses its own metaphors, idioms, turns of expression, and modes of thought; every language has its own constructions, syntax, metrical system; and the successful transference of a thought from one language to another depends on the skill of the translator in deciding whether he may employ the same metaphor, metre, or what not, or must cast about for a corresponding or similar one which shall produce the same effect. Perhaps these remarks may best be illustrated by mentioning a perfect example of what a translation ought not to be. Nothing will suit our purpose better than Miltons famous "traduction" of Horace's Ode to Pyrrha. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Translations Classic Reprint

Download or read book Translations Classic Reprint written by Ezra Pound and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-23 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Translations Translating does not, for him, differ in essence from any other poetic job; as the poet begins by seeing, so the translator by reading; but his reading must be a kind of seeing. Hence the miraculous accomplishment of Pound's translations sitting down before a text, he doesn't chafe at restrictions unusual to his lyric practice. A good translation seems like a miracle because one who can read the original can, so to speak, see the poem before the poet writes it, and marvel at the success of his wrestle to subdue his own language to the vision; but Pound has always written as if to meet a test of this kind, in a spirit of utter fidelity to his material, whether a document or an intuition. He has told of working six months to fix a complex instantaneous emotion in fourteen words. Translation is indeed for Pound somewhat easier than what is called 'original composition'; those six months were spent less on finding the words than in bringing the emotion into focus, and a text to be translated, once grasped, doesn't wobble. The technical difficulty is comparable, but the emotional discipline, if no less exacting, less exhausting. Pound has for this reason recommended translation as an exercise to young poets plagued by the tendency of what they are trying to express to undergo expedient transformations. Book The Odyssey of Homer Vol 1

Download or read book The Odyssey of Homer Vol 1 written by Homer Homer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Odyssey of Homer, Vol. 1: Translated Into English Blank Verse HE kind reception which my translation of the Iliad has met with from my countrymen has encouraged me to attempt a translation of the Odyssey in the same form of verse. I have found this a not unpleasing employment for a period of life which admonishes me that I cannot many times more appear before the public in this or any other manner. The task of translating verse is not, it is true, -merely mechanical, since it requires that the translator should catch from his author somewhat of the glow with which he wrote, just as a good reader is himself moved by the words which he delivers, and communicates the emotion to his hearers; yet is the translator spared the labor of invention, - the task of producing the ideas which it is his business to express, as well as that of bringing them into their proper relations with each other. A great part of the fatigue which attends origi nal composition, long pursued, is therefore avoided, and this gentler exercise of the intellectual faculties agrees better with that stage of life when the brain begins to be haunted by a presentiment that the time of its final repose is not far off. Some of the observations which I have made, in my Preface to the Iliad, on that work and the translation which I have made of it, apply also to the Odyssey and to the version which I now lay before the reader. Book Poems and Translations Classic Reprint

Download or read book Poems and Translations Classic Reprint written by John M. Synge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems and Translations I have often thought that at the side of the poetic diction, which everyone condemns, modern verse contains a great deal of poetic material, using poetic in the same special sense. The poetry of exaltation Will be always the highest; but when men lose their poetic feeling for ordinary life, and cannot write poetry of ordinary things, their exalted poetry is likely to lose its strength of exaltation, in the way men cease to build beautiful, churches when they have iost happiness in building shops. Many of the Older poets, such as Villon and Herrick and Burns, used the whole of their personal life as their material, and the verse written in this way was read by strong men, and thieves, and deacons, not by little cliques only. Then, in the town writing of the eighteenth century, ordinary life was put into verse that was not poetry, and when poetry came back with Coleridge and Shelley, it went into verse that was not always human. In these days poetry is usually a flower of evil or good; but it is the timber of poetry that wears most surely, and there is no timber that has not strong roots among the clay and worms. Even if we grant that exalted poetry can be kept successful by itself, the strong things of life are needed in poetry also, to Show that what is exalted or tender is not made by feeble blood. It may almost be said that before verse can be human again it must learn to be brutal. The poems which follow were written at different times during the last sixteen or seventeen years, most of them before the Views just stated, with which they have little to do, had come into my head. The translations are sometimes free, and sometimes almost literal, according as seemed most fitting with the form of language I have used. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aeneid of Virgil: Freely Translated Into English Blank Verse I would ask, however, to be judged on my dealing with the best portions and passages of my author; and a little reflection will, I think, suffice to acquit me of presump tion herein There is no end of passages in Homer, ' writes Cowper, in his Preface to the second edition of his translation of the Iliad, which must creep unless they are lifted; and to give relief to such without seeming unseasonably tumid, is extremely difficult.' And although Virgil has very few indeed of such passages, yet has he occasionally - and this only in common with all fiction writers of antiquity - narratives and details wholly and exclusively belonging to the 'classical age, to which it is impossible, in anything of a faithful rendering, to impart positive interest or attractiveness for a modern who reads them in his own language - omarz' res z'psa negat. The portions, then, of my work on which I would desire to be specially tried are those which purport to render what the classical reader will pronounce to be the best passages and portions of the original; in the other parts of my version I shall be content, as I trust my reader will also be, if I do not sink below the level of ordinary poetical diction and style. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Odes of Horace, Vol. 2: Translated Into English Verse The present translation is an endeavour to carry out the aims of the former, namely, to give a rendering, in the simplest metre, of the meaning of the poet, without any attempt at a literal translation, and without being in any way bound to use the same metre in translating similar Odes. The original Latin is also pre fixed, not to show the exactness of the trans lation, since it is not exact, but as an assistance to those of my readers who, like myself, have long left their schooldays behind them, but who may still retain a not altogether unkindly re collection of their classical studies. Book The Iliad of Homer Vol 1

Download or read book The Iliad of Homer Vol 1 written by Homer Homer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Iliad of Homer, Vol. 1: Translated Into English Blank Verse Whether a translation of Homer may be best executed in blank verse or in rhyme, is a question in the decision of which no man can find difficulty, who has ever duly considered what translation ought to be, or who is in any degree practically acquainted with those very different kinds of versification. I will venture to assert that a just translation of any ancient poet in rhyme, is impossible. No human ingenuity can be equal to the task of closing every couplet with sounds homotonous, expressing at the same time the full sense, and only the full sense of his original. The translator's ingenuity, indeed, in this case becomes itself a snare, and the readier he is at invention and expedient, the more likely he is to be betrayed into the widest departures from the guide whom he professes to follow. Hence it has happened, that although the public have long been in possession of an English Homer by a poet whose writings have done immortal honour to his country, the demand of a new one, and especially in blank verse, has been repeatedly and loudly made by some of the best judges and ablest writers of the present day. I have no contest with my predecessor. None is supposeable between performers on different instruments. Mr. Pope has surmounted all difficulties in his version of Homer that it was possible to surmount in rhyme.
