Book excerpt: Dieser Band präsentiert die Beiträge der VI. Innsbrucker Ringvorlesung zur Translationswissenschaft, die im Sommersemester 2008 am Institut für Translationswissenschaft stattfand. A. Pym (Spanien) und L.N.

Book The Routledge Handbook of Systemic Functional Linguistics

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Systemic Functional Linguistics written by Tom Bartlett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 1011 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Systemic Functional Linguistics brings together internationally renowned scholars of systemic functional linguistics (SFL) to provide a space for critical examination of the key tenets underpinning SFL theory. Uniquely, it includes description of the three main strands within contemporary SFL scholarship: Halliday’s Introduction to Functional Grammar, Martin’s discourse semantics and Fawcett’s Cardiff Grammar. In five sections and thirty-eight interdisciplinary chapters, this is the first handbook to cover the whole architecture of SFL theory, comprising: the ontology and epistemology of SFL; SFL as a clause grammar; lexicogrammar below the clause, and SFL’s approach to constituency; SFL’s vibrant theory of language above the clause; and SFL as a theory of praxis with real-world applications. With a wide range of language examples, a comprehensive editors’ introduction and a section on further reading, The Routledge Handbook of Systemic Functional Linguistics is an essential resource for all those studying and researching SFL or functional grammar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Translation Competence and Language Contrast A Multi Method Study

Download or read book Translation Competence and Language Contrast A Multi Method Study written by Iryna Kloster and published by Frank & Timme GmbH. This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience in translation does not always correlate with the quality of the target text. Also, the evaluations of translation work vary considerably among evaluators. Why not shifting the focus of attention from the final translation to the underlying translation process when assessing translation competence? Iryna Kloster applies a multi-method approach to model the translation competence based on empirical parameters, such as gaze behavior, dictionary use, revisions as well as subjective evaluations of comprehension and translation difficulty. Eye tracking, keystroke logging, screen recording and retrospective interviews were applied to collect data in the experimental groups consisting of novice and semi-professional translators. As a consequence, the author suggests using language contrasts for researching translation competence. She draws conclusions based on hypotheses testing, provides justification by triangulating quantitative and qualitative data and discusses the results in the light of empirical translation studies as well.

Book Thinking About Social Policy

Download or read book Thinking About Social Policy written by Franz-Xaver Kaufmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book traces the political history of the concept of social policy. „Social policy“ originated in Germany in the mid 19th century as a scholarly term that made a career in politics. The term became more prominent only after World War II. Kaufmann, the doyen of the sociology of social policy in Germany, argues that „social policy“ responds to the modern disjunction between “state” and “society” diagnosed by the German philosopher Hegel. Hegel’s disciple Lorenz von Stein saw social policy as a means to pacify the capitalist class conflict. After World War II, social policy expanded in an unprecedented way, changing its character in the process. Social policy turned from class politics into a policy for the whole population, with new concepts – like "social security", "redistribution" and "quality of life" - and new overarching formulas, "social market economy" and "social state" (the German version of “welfare state”). Both formulas have remained indeterminate and contested, indicating the inherent openness of the idea of the “social”.
