Book excerpt: When the nation is hit by a mysterious shockwave, the resulting power outage interrupts the world as we know it. Everything that was powered on at the time of the transient pulse is destroyed, seizing cities and populations in mass explosions caused by the rippling aftershocks. The lingering darkness severs society in two: those who choose ruinous control, stealing and murdering for provisions, and those who begin to create plans for long-term survival. The latter includes Dixie, a strong, yet hesitant young woman living in the heart of southern California. Dixie is forced to build plans to navigate the country in hopes to find a northern safe zone with Paul, a level-headed survivalist. When Paul goes missing, Dixie must overcome her chronic uncertainty and make the first of many life-or-death decisions: Will Dixie choose to wait for Paul, using up their limited supplies in the delay? Or, will Dixie begin the journey on her own, possibly having to turn to the dark side of society to survive?

  • Author : H.E. Lindberg
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 1987-07-31
  • ISBN : 9789024735662
  • Pages : 416 pages

Download or read book Dynamic Pulse Buckling written by H.E. Lindberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1987-07-31 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book originally appeared as a text prepared for the Defense Nuclear Agency to summarize research on dynamic pulse buckling, by the authors and their colleagues at SRI International, during the period from 1960 to 1980. The original printing of 300 copies by the DNA Press was followed shortly by a small second printing to meet the demand by readers who heard of the book from the primary recipients. This supply was also quickly exhausted, to researchers and practicing engineers outside the DNA community and to academics who wanted to include the material in courses on elastic and plastic stability of structures. Commercial publication by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers was therefore undertaken to meet the needs of this broader community. The objective of the book was to gather into a cohesive whole material that had been published in reports and the open literature during the two decade period. In the process of knitting this material together, a substantial amount of new work was done. The book therefore contains many new results never published in the open literature.

Book The Transient Radio Sky

    Book Details:
  • Author : Evan Francis Keane
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2011-07-16
  • ISBN : 3642196276
  • Pages : 195 pages

Download or read book The Transient Radio Sky written by Evan Francis Keane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-16 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high time-resolution radio sky represents unexplored astronomical territory. This thesis presents a study of the transient radio sky, focussing on millisecond scales. As such, the work is concerned primarily with neutron stars. In particular this research concentrates on a recently identified group of neutron stars, known as RRATs, which exhibit radio bursts every few minutes to every few hours. After analysing neutron star birthrates, a re-analysis of the Parkes Multibeam Pulsar Survey is described which has resulted in the discovery of 19 new transient radio sources. Of these, 12 have been seen to repeat and a follow-up campaign of observations has been undertaken. These studies have greatly increased our knowledge of the rotational properties of RRATs and enable us to conclude that they are pulsars with extreme nulling and/or pulse-to-pulse modulation. Although the evolution of neutron stars post-supernova is not yet understood, it seems that RRATs fit into the emerging picture in which pulsar magnetospheres switch between stable configurations.

Book Pulse and Synchro Photon Electronics

Download or read book Pulse and Synchro Photon Electronics written by Ferdinandas Vaitiekūnas and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the theory of large-signal nonlinear impulse processes occurring in bipolar and field-effect transistors with a Schottky gate, collapse TRAPATT and tunnel diodes, superlattices, and double heterojunction lasers. It evaluates the maximum speed of impulse operation of these elements and experimentally constructs the generation of pulse oscillations with a repetition frequency of up to 1, 2 and 4 GHz. Original or adapted methods of mathematical modeling of processes provide an opportunity to obtain quantitative dependencies of generated pulse parameters, while the book also details the synchro-photon effect. In addition, as shown here, when a semiconductor element is switched on by an electric pulse, and at the same time a pulse of photons synchronously illuminates it, an effect occurs which increases the switching speed of the element by an order of magnitude. At the same time, the switching transient characteristic is shortened by 10 times or more. After applying this effect in pulse generators in the gigahertz frequency range, an increase in the repetition frequency of the generated oscillations is possible.

Book Short Pulse Laser Systems for Biomedical Applications

Download or read book Short Pulse Laser Systems for Biomedical Applications written by Kunal Mitra and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents practical information on the clinical applications of short pulse laser systems and the techniques for optimizing these applications in a manner that will be relevant to a broad audience, including engineering and medical students as well as researchers, clinicians, and technicians. Short pulse laser systems are useful for both subsurface tissue imaging and laser induced thermal therapy (LITT), which hold great promise in cancer diagnostics and treatment. Such laser systems may be used alone or in combination with optically active nanoparticles specifically administered to the tissues of interest for enhanced contrast in imaging and precise heating during LITT. Mathematical and computational models of short pulse laser-tissue interactions that consider the transient radiative transport equation coupled with a bio-heat equation considering the initial transients of laser heating were developed to analyze the laser-tissue interaction during imaging and therapy. Experiments were first performed to characterize the tissue optical properties needed to optimize the dose for thermal therapy. Experiments were then performed on animal models to characterize the heat affected zone for LITT. The experimental measurements were also validated using the computational models.

Book Diesel Engine Transient Operation

Download or read book Diesel Engine Transient Operation written by Constantine D. Rakopoulos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-10 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, the study of internal combustion engines operation has focused on the steady-state performance. However, the daily driving schedule of automotive and truck engines is inherently related to unsteady conditions. In fact, only a very small portion of a vehicle’s operating pattern is true steady-state, e. g. , when cruising on a motorway. Moreover, the most critical conditions encountered by industrial or marine engines are met during transients too. Unfortunately, the transient operation of turbocharged diesel engines has been associated with slow acceleration rate, hence poor driveability, and overshoot in particulate, gaseous and noise emissions. Despite the relatively large number of published papers, this very important subject has been treated in the past scarcely and only segmentally as regards reference books. Merely two chapters, one in the book Turbocharging the Internal Combustion Engine by N. Watson and M. S. Janota (McMillan Press, 1982) and another one written by D. E. Winterbone in the book The Thermodynamics and Gas Dynamics of Internal Combustion Engines, Vol. II edited by J. H. Horlock and D. E. Winterbone (Clarendon Press, 1986) are dedicated to transient operation. Both books, now out of print, were published a long time ago. Then, it seems reasonable to try to expand on these pioneering works, taking into account the recent technological advances and particularly the global concern about environmental pollution, which has intensified the research on transient (diesel) engine operation, typically through the Transient Cycles certification of new vehicles.
