Book excerpt: One aim of Gilmer’s captivating text on university pedagogy is to show that biochemistry (or any science) does not consist solely of facts to be learned, but is a way of thinking about the world. Her purpose, both in this book and in her classroom, is to make her students into critical thinkers rather than passive learners. The chapters cast a critical eye over research into enhanced education techniques such as collaborative learning. Gilmer describes the action research she conducted in her own biochemistry undergraduate classroom into ways of improving the learning environment. She offers various perspectives on the make-up of her classroom, including an analysis of ethnographic data. The tools Gilmer employs as she hones her teaching skills include collaborative learning and technology. She views the classroom through various theoretical perspectives: social constructivism, cultural-historical activity theory, and a theory that involves the dialectic between the structure of the learning environment and the agency of the learners (a group among whom she includes herself). She provides a wealth of autobiographical detail as well as the results of her action research, which followed up on its original subjects after an interval of 11 years, to see what impact her course had on their professional growth. Above all, this volume is proof of what can be achieved in education when teachers are as interested in the process of learning as they are in their subject itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This action research study focused on my students ́̀̆use of collaborative learning and technology in our university-level biochemistry classroom. I use a qualitative methodology to learn the thoughts and feelings of my 34 students and biochemistry colleagues to this Web-enhanced classroom. I merge four lenses: ethnographic, autobiographical, fictional, and metalogic. Using the ideas of social constructivism I organized my classroom to encourage collaboration and use of technology. I used activity theory in the data analysis, as I examined how the tools, rules or schemas, division of labor and communities associated with 1) my students reaching their learning objects/outcomes, and 2) the importance of collaboration and technology in my own life as a scientist/science educator. I wrote a fictionalized story, which became a tool in helping me understand my students ́̀̆reactions. Finally, I have a metalogue with one biochemistry colleague about the problematic issues of bringing reform in science teaching to higher education. From my action research I learned to 1) use theory in conducting educational research, 2) use qualitative data to understand human interactions, 3 ) prepare a Web site with steps to teach students how to collaborate and do a group project, and 4) balance didactic teaching with more student-oriented learning.

Each chapter within the section will include (a) a description of the theory with goals, assumptions, and aspects particular to the theory, (b) the original development of and interactions of the theory, (c) validation of the theory, (d) generalizability of the theory across cultures, ethnicities, and genders, (e) the use and application of the theory, (f) critiques of the theory, (g) any instruments associated with the theory, and (h) two to five particular studies exemplifying particular theories as individuals have used them in theoretical framework of dissertations or published articles and be written by the original theorist or prominent contributors to the theory. The Handbook is intended for graduate students enrolled in research courses or completing theses and dissertations. Additionally, professors of all educational disciplines in the social scierices would be an interested audience. There is also potential use of the text as administrators, counselors, and teachers in schools use theory to guide practice. As more inquiry is being promoted among school leaders, this book has more meaning for practitioners.

In the current study, we describe an example in which the teacher plays an important role in creating the Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) in this environment to encourage peer learning while coping with complicated material. We believe that one of the important components in guiding such peer work is the teacher,Äôs ability to sense each group,Äôs progress and to employ empathy in the classroom as a tool for coping with the difficulty and challenge of acquiring new knowledge and for creating a productive dialog between groups that disagree. In this example, the process of Information Communication Technology (ICT) implementation encouraged the preservice teachers (PSTs) to create an alternative set of symbols, which eventually served as a ,Äúlanguage,Äù and help them understand the biochemical processes.
