The international symposium, held in 2005, gathered on one platform people from different parts of Asia -- Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and Australia, besides India -- to explore the Asian methodologies of transmission of knowledge. The participants shared the fund of their experience on innovative projects to use the arts as a tool in the educational system for sensitizing the younger generation towards their cultural heritage. The conference stressed the need for identifying the characteristic features of the numerous strategies for transmitting information, knowledge and techniques that existed in the Asian continent, not only through the written word but also through the oral, the visual and the performative mediums. The IIC-Asia Project was launched in 1997. In the first phase, seminars were organized, each focusing on a particular region of Asia and covering its social, economic and political dimensions. In the second phase, a thematic approach was adopted. A number of themes were thus covered: India and Asia: Aesthetic Discourses; Transmissions and Transformations: Learning through the Arts in Asia; Embroidery in Asia: Sui-Dhaga; Crossing Boundaries through Needle and Thread; and Culture of Indigo: Exploring the Asian Panorama - Plant, Product, Power. The IIC-Asia Project has also compiled an anthology of Asian Women's Writing. Four festivals of documentary films made by Asian women filmmakers were also organized.

Book excerpt: This ethnographic study examines the role of differing school knowledge in reproducing various social classes in the society. It was observed that an unequal availability of capital resources, agents' class habitus, and the type of their "cultural currency" act as selection mechanisms that clearly favour some social groups over others. The ruling classes ensure the transfer of their power and privilege to their children by providing them with quality education in elite schools. The disadvantaged classes are excluded from these unique institutions by both social and economic sanctions. They have no other option than to educate their children either in public schools or Islamic madaris. As a result, inequitable educational opportunities consolidate the existing social-class hierarchy.

This book draws the attention of readers to the implications of formal education for the state as a powerful tool that can convert the mindset of the masses. The book is particularlypertinent in view of how education is being used and misused in Pakistan, especially with reference to religious education. The contributors subscribe to a generally positive view of education and support efforts at widening access to formal education both in the richer and poorer parts of theworld. They recognise, however, that education comes with consequences. Some, perhaps most, of these may be perceived as beneficial, but some of those consequences are undesirable and can be highly damaging to a particular population or segment of a population. Thus, it is clear that while literacyin Pakistan has slowly but steadily improved, there has been a corresponding level of social fragmentation and dissatisfaction within the country. To illustrate their viewpoints, the contributors examine the impact of General Zia's Islamisation programmes on education in the 1980s. General Zia'sgovernment tinkered with education in such profound ways that those programmes continue to shape the scope of what is possible within formal education in Pakistan. Thus, this volume includes discussions of formal religious schools in Pakistan. The authors also examine the wide rift between thevarious state funded and private schooling opportunities available in Pakistan. State funded education currently lags behind the agreed goals set out by the UN in their Millennium Development Goals and this inadequate provision of state funded education has left a vacuum for other groups to move inand introduce rival pedagogical agendas. All of the contributions in this volume focus on particular aspects of education across Pakistan. Some are ethnographic and anthropological, some historical, some pedagogical, some are clearly influenced by social policy agendas. They seek to identify anumber of very real and complex sets of issues involved in providing high quality and mass education across Pakistan. The language of instruction, the source of financing, the nationalist and religious agendas embedded within the curricula, gender role expectations and impositions, the historicallegacies which have shaped the educational environment are all touched upon. Nestled in amongst the complex issues are examples of very high quality education and dedicated educationalists who achieve little miracles every day. Thus, this volume portrays a range of views on how education in Pakistanis, what it could be, and perhaps most importantly what it ought to be.

Book excerpt: Pakistan suffers from an extensive education crisis. Millions of Pakistani children do not attend school, and those that do must deal with absent teachers and poor learning environments, among other things. What makes Pakistan's education crisis particularly troubling is that it exacerbates many of the country's other problems. The uneducated masses complicate efforts to groom qualified experts to effectively address Pakistan's many public policy challenges. Additionally, young people without sufficient education have trouble getting jobs and can become desirable recruitment targets for militant groups. This report, based on dozens of interviews with officials and experts across Pakistan, seeks to set the record straight. It reveals, for example, that contrary to popular narratives, Pakistan's education spending has increased significantly in recent years and is now nearly equivalent to the military budget. The report argues, however, that Pakistan must spend better, not simply spend more, in order to ease and ultimately solve its education crisis. The report also compares how foreign donors and local leaders have sought to transform education in Pakistan, with emphasis on the central challenge of very poor learning levels.
