Book Transforming Further Education and Training in South Africa Qualitative findings and analysis

Download or read book Transforming Further Education and Training in South Africa Qualitative findings and analysis written by Andre Kraak and published by HSRC Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains eight papers from a detailed study of technical college provision in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, that raised the following four issues relevant to the transformation of technical colleges across South Africa: (1) the teaching and learning environment at technical colleges is suboptimal; (2) social relations at the technical colleges are tense, with few institutions having successfully come to terms with the rapid deracialization of student enrollments in recent years; (3) the labor market surrounding technical colleges appears totally dysfunctional, with few students obtaining employment after technical college training; and (4) the separate development policies of the past necessitate institutional restructuring. The following papers are included: "A Study of Technical Colleges in KwaZulu-Natal: A Methodological Introduction" (Andre Kraak, Graham Hall); "Problems Facing Further Education and Training" (Andre Kraak); "Planning Imperative: New Policy Framework in FET [Further Education and Training]" (Andre Kraak); "Socio-Economic and Educational Profile of KwaZulu-Natal" (Nisaar Mahomed); "Quantitative Overview of the Technical Colleges of KwaZulu-Natal" (Graham Hall); "Learning, Teaching and Management Environment: Evidence from Qualitative Studies" (Andre Kraak); "Autonomy and Responsiveness: Evidence from the Qualitative Case Studies" (Andre Kraak); and "Critical Overview: The Need for Labour Market and Institutional Reform" (Andre Kraak). The bibliography contains 52 references. (MN)

This book was released on 2020 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The idea of transformation in higher education underpins all policy documents, academic literature and on-going debates in South Africa. Transforming Universities in South Africa: Pathways to Higher Education Reform responds to the pressing need to comprehensively review the post-apartheid experience and assess where South Africa's higher education stands across the continent and globally, particularly within the country's efforts to overcome decades of socio-economic imbalances. It addresses the question of whether South Africa's transformation strategy from apartheid to democracy was simply a symbolic new flag-raising and new anthem singing exercise reflecting a transition akin to those limited decolonization projects elsewhere in the world, or whether something more fundamental was possible and was achieved with political and policy implications for other countries in Africa and globally. This volume's ultimate purpose is to provide a basis for imagining new futures in which South Africa higher education in the context of Africa and the global world takes centre stage"--

Book Transformation in Higher Education

Download or read book Transformation in Higher Education written by Nico Cloete and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2006 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the most comprehensive and most thorough study of the developments in South African higher education and research after the first democratic elections of 1994 – that is of post-Apartheid South African higher education. This volume will provide its readers with a detailed insight into the new (i.e. post-1994) South African higher education system. The large number of experienced authors and editors involved in the book guarantees that the reader will be introduced in the new SA higher education system from a large number of perspectives that are presented in a consistent and coherent way. This book will be of interest to scholars, students, administrators, policymakers and politicians interested in South Africa, higher education and research, and policy analysis. "Publications on higher education are not new. But this volume, which is the first of its kind as a collective effort of tracing and examining the twists and turns taken by processes of change in the South African higher education system in a context of profound societal and global transformation, adds a fresh dimension to the debate. In its examination of the extent to which the changes were in line with policy intentions, particularly with regard to equity, democratisation, responsiveness and efficiency, and how a new institutional landscape started emerging, it makes a momentous contribution to the current debate about higher education restructuring." Njabulo Ndebele, Vice-chancellor, University of Cape Town and Chair of the South African Association of University Vice-chancellors "This book addresses a rich variety of issues on South African higher education. It puts these in the relevant context of the process of globalization and it shows that the South African experiences offer us a lot to learn. Highly recommended for those who are intrigued by the innovations taking place in South African higher education as well as for those who intend to grasp the effects of globalization." Frans van Vught, Rector Magnificus and founding Director of the Center for Higher Education Policy Studies, University of Twente, The Netherlands "Reflection is a crucial ingredient to learning. In this book on higher education we have reflections on a unique period in the history of a country that managed its transition to democracy in a way that was unique, but from which we can all learn. Higher education in South Africa played a vital role in that transition and was part of the many tensions, choices and influences. They have been thoughtfully captured." Brenda Gourley, Vice-chancellor, The Open University, UK and board member, Centre for Higher Education Transformation. "No contemporary higher education system has changed as dramatically as that in South Africa. This book, rich in data, examines the changes that took place and offers insights into how change frequently cannot be predicted. The analysis captures the excitement, high expectations, remarkable successes, and failures in the transformation of the apartheid system of higher education. This excellent study provides rich fare for comparative analysis." Fred M. Hayward, American Council on Education Pilot Project, Executive Vice President, Council for Higher Education Accreditation, US.

This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is transformation in contemporary South African higher education? How can it be facilitated through research and pedagogic practices? These questions are addressed in this edited collection by established academics and emerging research students from nine South African universities. The chapters give us access to students? worlds: how they construct, experience and navigate their complex spheres, on and off campus. By engaging with students as knowledge producers, we transform popular ways of thinking about race, gender, class, sexuality, disability and age as singular and natural markers of difference and diversity.ÿ Rather than taking diversity as fixed and rooted in nature, we explore how diversity is imagined and lived in particular contexts on and off campus.

Book Unleashing the potential

Download or read book Unleashing the potential written by Marope, P.T.M. and published by UNESCO Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "UNESCO has recently published the third volume of its Education on the Move series, a series dedicated to the analysis of key trends in education with the hope of inspiring dialogue among policy makers, educators and other key stakeholders on the challenges of education for tomorrow. The latest publication, entitled Unleashing the Potential: Transforming Technical and Vocational Education and Training is focused entirely on issues related to technical and vocational education and training (TVET). It takes stock of the steadily increasing demands and expectations on TVET systems around the globe and presents recent policy trends in the field of TVET. In their analysis, the authors provide insights into what it takes to unleash the potential of TVET systems around the world. They propose an integrated analytical approach that takes into consideration such factors as economic growth, social equity and issues related to sustainability so that TVET can contribute more effectively to contemporary policy issues such as youth unemployment, gender disparities and climate change. Overall, the book calls for a transformation of TVET systems to enable them to respond to the demands of their contexts. This transformation should enable TVET systems to acquire agility to stay current and responsive to the rapidly changing demands of the twenty-first century."--Publisher's website.

Book Private Further Education and Training in South Africa

Download or read book Private Further Education and Training in South Africa written by Salim Akoojee and published by HSRC Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private provision of Technical and Vocational Further Education and Training (TVET) in the Further Education and Training (FET) band in the South African education system is an issue of national importance. To date however, information about the precise nature of this sector has been, at best, speculative. This study sets about constructing a comprehensive picture of the private post-school TVET sector. It provides, for the first time, empirical data about the participants, the location and ownership of institutions, the programmes offered, and the delivery of private TVET provision in the country. This is supplemented by a qualitative analysis using select case studies to explore the character of the sector. Results suggest a vibrant sector underpinned by differentiation in provision types with significant overlap in the way in which providers are managed and programmes delivered. Private Further Education and Training in South Africa provides the most up-to-date data and analysis of the sector. As the subtitle "The changing landscape" suggests, the study was undertaken in the midsts of considerable policy development in South Africa and is likely to provide an important source for understanding the sector.
