Book Transformative Preparation Measuring the Intercultural Competence Development of Higher Education and Student Affairs Hesa Students and Exploring the Intercultural Learning Experience Across Assistantship Sites

Download or read book Transformative Preparation Measuring the Intercultural Competence Development of Higher Education and Student Affairs Hesa Students and Exploring the Intercultural Learning Experience Across Assistantship Sites written by Rafael A. Rodriguez and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's college student body reflects, among many things, the outcome of policies geared towards increasing access and diversifying the academy, efforts to recruit international students, the vast social, political, and economic disparities among marginalized populations, and the extreme cultural polarization of our times. Students on campuses have broad and individualized perspective, approaches, and values, which are culturally rooted, embedded within our socialization and often times conflict with the experiences of other students or the student affairs professionals tasked with supporting students. Student affairs practitioners must enter the field possessing a degree of intercultural competence, defined as an appropriate skillset and mindset, to effectively work across difference and support today's college student. While the development of intercultural competence is a life-long learning process, master's-level preparatory programs serve as a critical space for aspiring student affairs practitioners to engage in intercultural learning and skill development. Utilizing pre and post data result from the Intercultural Development Inventory and information gathered from post-graduation interviews, this mixed-methods study examined the intercultural competence development of students in Higher Education within a student affairs master's level preparatory and their intercultural learning experiences at the assistantship site. The study found that across assistantship sites and observed developmental change, intercultural learning was dictated by the three themes: influential relationships, impactful factors, and depth of engagement.

Book Effects of International Service Learning on Development of Intercultural Competence

Download or read book Effects of International Service Learning on Development of Intercultural Competence written by Sharon M. McCloskey (Ed.D. candidate at the University of Hartford) and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the United States becomes an increasingly multicultural society (Colby & Ortman, 2014; Perez & Hirschman, 2009), there are greater opportunities for cross-culture interactions, especially in settings for healthcare practitioners. The profession of occupational therapy demands future practitioners understand culture and become skilled in the delivery of culturally competent care (AOTA, 2014). The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of international service learning (ISL) on the development of intercultural competence in graduate occupational therapy students. Inquiry for this research followed a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design. Study participants were graduate occupational therapy students who engaged in an international service-learning experience. The quantitative data were collected utilizing a self-report measure, the intercultural developmental inventory (IDI; Hammer, 1999, 2009, 2011). This instrument is aligned with the developmental model of intercultural sensitivity (DMIS; Bennett, 1986, 1993), and identifies specific orientations that range from an ethnocentric mindset to a more ethnorelative, or intercultural mindset. The qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews and reflective journals, examining the participants' perceptions about the ISL experience and the development of intercultural competence. Grounded theory data analysis protocols were utilized to systematically analyze the qualitative data and further explain the quantitative findings. The findings of this study were mostly derived from the qualitative data. Except for a few changes in specific orientations of intercultural competence, the quantitative findings revealed the group's developmental level of intercultural competence remained relatively unchanged before and after the ISL. The qualitative phase of the study revealed a number of interesting findings about the effects of an ISL experience and confirmed an ISL's influence on the development of intercultural competence. From participant perspectives, an ISL experience is considered a valuable and transformative pedagogy in occupational therapy education. The ISL experience did result in perspective-shifting for participants. The grounded theory model that emerged revealed four interdependent components, cultural consciousness, cognitive dissonance, connecting, and confidence, that influence and shape the core theoretical category, intercultural competence development through relatedness. Results of this study have implications for occupational therapy education. Recommendations for future research include further inquiry of ISL as a pedagogy, and the development of intercultural competence, with use of this emerged grounded theory model.

Book The Effect of Pre departure Preparation on Student Intercultural Development During Study Abroad Programs

Download or read book The Effect of Pre departure Preparation on Student Intercultural Development During Study Abroad Programs written by Stephanie Shaheen and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The question addressed in this project is whether pre-departure preparation can help students to gain intercultural competencies when they study abroad, especially on shorter length programs. Specifically, the following research questions were examined; 1) How does a pre-departure orientation course titled Intercultural Experiential Learning (IS 693) affect the cultural learning for students on study abroad programs? 2) How do the changes in intercultural learning of students on study abroad programs compare with students who studied abroad without the pre-departure orientation course, and with students who did not study abroad, as measured by the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) post-test scores on the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS)? 3) What dynamics or factors influence the nature of student learning about intercultural competence on study abroad programs? A mixed method comparative study using qualitative and quantitative research was conducted with three groups of students. A pre-test/post-test measured change in participant behavior. The IDI and DMIS scores showed change in intercultural development. Both qualitative (interviews and observations) and quantitative (IDI instrument and questionnaires) research methods were used to gain greater insight into the experience of the participants. The statistical analysis showed that students who had the treatment did not have significant increases on their post-test scores over non-treatment students, and no significant difference on post-test scores existed for students who studied abroad when compared with non study abroad students. The statistical analysis also showed that two different conditions increased the likelihood that students would have a significant increase in sensitivity: 1) having parents who have had overseas experiences and 2) being non-minority students (racial and ethnic minorities as well as international students). The qualitative data analysis illuminated other factors that encouraged intercultural growth including: 1) significant intercultural interactions with international peers, 2) not having prolonged negative experiences with international people, 3) having the goal of gaining cultural understanding and students seeing an applicable use in their future career for their experience, 4) the chance to speak with international peers in English on a variety of cultural topics, and finally, 5) being members of the majority race and ethnic groups in the U.S.

Book Education for Workplace Diversity

Download or read book Education for Workplace Diversity written by Gabriele Abermann and published by Common Ground Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-30 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you think that communicating across cultural boundaries is a necessary skill in today's globalized economy? Do you believe that immersion in another culture automatically means becoming interculturally competent? Have you ever wondered why students sometimes come back from their placement abroad with negative stereotypes confirmed? What can universities do to ensure that students develop these skills? If these are issues you want to address, then reading this book may help you in finding relevant answers. This book provides theory-based insight on why intercultural competence acquisition does not happen automatically when a student is exposed to a different organizational and host country culture environment, but requires well-designed intervention measures. The chapters present a comprehensive, but scalable support structure for students on work placements abroad based on the outcomes of the university-enterprise cooperation project SKILL2E. In this project seven universities and five enterprises from Austria, Finland, Spain, Romania, Turkey, the UK, and the US have collaborated in designing a framework that supports intercultural learning for students on work placements abroad. These intervention measures include pre-departure training to raise awareness regarding sensitive issues in different organizational and host country cultures, guided reflection during and after the placement to trigger deeper learning, a model for cultural mentoring and, an evaluation concept to measure the effectiveness of the interventions in order to continuously improve. Real examples demonstrate how universities can prepare graduates for the networked workplace of tomorrow and how enterprises can integrate and benefit from the innovation and productivity potential of diversity.

Book excerpt: The hybridity and dynamism of today’s interconnected, interdependent and culturally diverse world poses challenges and opportunities for learning and communication. This book introduces an approach to facilitate global learning opportunities, while facing these challenges. The approach is based on the cage painting metaphor for dialogic co-construction of meaning, and understanding of multiple perspectives. Resolving disorienting dilemmas or preconceptions requires a dialectic flow of thinking since the root of the problem may lay deep in person’s beliefs and values. Such experiences might be transformative in their nature, causing change in person’s perspective; better understanding the culture of themselves and other people; reflective and mindful inquiry into one’s worldview; the third place processes. Misunderstandings are more prevalent when using technology—global reach—between people from distant locations different cultures. To prepare people for these challenges, we offer a Web 2.0-based instructional design blueprint. Dependent on the context and content of the planned activities, the cage painting and global learning processes may be facilitated simultaneously or sequentially. The approach presented in this book has attracted interest of educators in different disciplines as well as human resources leaders concerned with key characteristics of today’s global business workers: intercultural/global communication and collaboration. The ideas emerged from six years of studying ways in which we and our colleagues from 25 other countries integrated global learning into classrooms in a range of discipline areas. In this book we explore the competences needed to communicate interculturally and avoid the effects of preconceptions on our communication and collaboration. We review metaphors commonly used in intercultural communication and then introduce a new metaphor called "Cage Painting". The process of Cage Painting requires certain conditions during intercultural communication, whether it is face-to-face or via global reach, using technology. The transformative processes that we undergo as we confront cultural disorienting dilemmas, smiling being a simple example of one, are named the Third Place.

Book Developing Intercultural Sensitivity Through Immersion Experiences in Unfamiliar Cultural Milieux

Download or read book Developing Intercultural Sensitivity Through Immersion Experiences in Unfamiliar Cultural Milieux written by Mary Kay Florence Pieski and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educators play an important part in preparing students to understand and interact within a culturally diverse and interconnected world. Educators by their very profession are leaders. The word "educate" is derived from the Latin verb educare, meaning to lead out. Educators are responsible for the intellectual, moral and social instruction of their students. Culturally appropriate knowledge, behavior, and attitudes must be developed in both the educator and student of the 21st century. Despite this need to be more internationally minded, developing intercultural competence in pre-service educators is marginal at best. Developing intercultural competence is a life long journey. Accomplishing such growth means developing behavior, cognitive and affective skills which an enable an individual to interact effectively and appropriately with culturally diverse individuals or groups. Cultural immersion experience is one way for pre-service educators to develop intercultural competence. The theoretical basis for this study is the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS; Bennett, 1986, 1993). This study explored the development of intercultural competence of six pre-service educators through immersion experiences in unfamiliar milieux. This mixed methods study used data from the Intercultural Development Inventory, (Hammer & Bennett, 2007, 2009), a measure of intercultural sensitivity grounded in the DMIS, as a pretest, post-test and post-post test, application form, pre- and post experience questionnaires, interviews and journals to ascertain development. Findings from this study demonstrate that pre-serviced educators can benefit from developmentally effective immersion experiences. Several participants experienced a small gain in intercultural sensitivity as measured by the IDI after a regression upon re-entry. Intensive appropriate sequenced intercultural preparation prior, during, and after the immersion experience could enhance the impact of the experience on the intercultural competence development as measured by the IDI.

Book The Role of Leadership Educators

Download or read book The Role of Leadership Educators written by Kathy L. Guthrie and published by IAP. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership, as a discipline, leadership education, as a field, and leadership educator, as a profession are still in their infancy and rapidly evolving. As professionals in higher education, we are constantly asked to provide opportunities for students to learn leadership, whether that is inside or outside of the classroom. However, very little, if any professional development occurs in how to create such learning opportunities. This book provides resources for leadership educators in three sections. The first section sets the stage for leadership education and the professional work of leadership educators, culminating with a variety of professional development resources for leadership educators. The second section introduces a leadership learning framework, provides characteristics and examples of strong leadership programs and assessment practices, and describes the transformative practice of leadership education. The third and final section offers specific instructional and assessment strategies ranging from discussion, case study, and reflection, to team-based- and service-learning to self-assessments, role-play, simulation, and games, to fulfill learning outcomes.

Book Improving Intercultural Learning Experiences in Higher Education

Download or read book Improving Intercultural Learning Experiences in Higher Education written by Thushari Welikala and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many decades people from all parts of the world have come to the UK to study. In recent years, numbers have increased, and arguably greater attention has been given to their experiences as students. Guidance is now available on issues of cultural awareness, but this guidance rarely focuses on students' learning experiences. This book fills that gap by considering these key questions: In what ways do cultures of learning vary? What do international students tell us about the experience of learning in the UK, and what happens if their current experiences differ from their previous ones? Can experiences of learning be improved? How and by whom? What might intercultural learning be and how might it help?

Book Assessing the Relationship Between Intercultural Competence and Leadership Styles

Download or read book Assessing the Relationship Between Intercultural Competence and Leadership Styles written by Chris Taylor Cartwright and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As U.S. higher education institutions strive to educate students to meet the needs of an increasingly complex world, there is great importance in studying the interplay between leadership and culture to enhance preparation of global-ready graduates. This inquiry examines the relationship between intercultural competence and leadership styles. The construct of intercultural competence focuses on effectiveness in engaging people across cultural differences, while the construct of leadership style or "connective leadership" focuses on the achieving styles employed to engage diverse followers. The Fulbright International Student Program offers an unparalleled opportunity to examine the dynamic interplay of intercultural and leadership development. More than 100 participants were surveyed using the Intercultural Effectiveness Scale and Achieving Styles Inventory psychometric instruments. Statistically significant correlations emerged between intercultural competence and connective leadership across four critical themes: individual development, the Fulbright Program, international education, and higher education. Overall, multiple leadership styles can be achieved through curiosity and continuous learning about cultural differences. Implications for individual learning and organizational development are discussed.
