Book Turning the World Upside Down

Download or read book Turning the World Upside Down written by Nigel Crisp and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turning the World Upside Down is a search to understand what is happening and what it means for us all. It is based on Nigel Crisp's own journey from running the largest health system in the world to working in some of the poorest countries, and draws upon his own experiences to explore new ideas and innovations around the world. The book has three unique features: Describes what rich countries can learn from poorer ones, as well as the other way round Deals with health in rich and poor countries in the same way, not treating them as totally different, and suggests that instead of talking about international development we should talk about co-development Sets out a new vision for global health, and our rights and accountabilities as citizens of the world There is an unfair import export business in people and ideas that flourishes between rich and poor countries. Rich countries import trained health workers and export their ideas and ideology about health in poorer ones, whether or not they are appropriate or useful. What, Nigel Crisp asks, if we were to turn the world upside down - so the import export business was reversed and poorer countries exported their ideas and experience whilst richer ones exported their health workers? Health leaders in poorer countries, without the resources or the baggage of rich countries, have learned to innovate, to build on the strengths of the population and their communities and develop new approaches that are relevant for the rich and poor alike. At the same time, richer countries and their health workers could help poorer countries to train, in their own country, the workers they need for the future. They would help pay a debt for all the workers who have migrated and learn themselves the new ways of working, which they will need in the 21st Century. We could stop talking about international development - as something the rich world does to the poor - and start talking about co-development, our shared learning and shared future. There is already a movement of people and ideas travelling in this direction. Young people get this intuitively. Many thousands of young professionals want a different professional education for themselves - in global health. Together with the leaders from poorer countries and the innovators around the world, they are creating a new global vision for health. Turning the World Upside Down is a search for understanding that helps us to see how Western Scientific Medicine, which has served us so well in the 20th Century, needs to adapt and evolve to cope with the demands of the 21st Century. It sets our a new vision and concludes by describing the actions we need to take to accelerate the change.

Book excerpt: Whether we like it or not, we earthlings are about to enter a dramatic period of change. The physical earth is changing; it is entering a multidimensional form. The purpose of physical earth as we know it was to help us individuate. Now it is time to enter a new series of dimensions. The earth is about to give in to a new multidimensional consciousness. However, this cannot happen unless we understand that, as human beings, we are being asked to change. We are being asked to let go of our attachments to physical things. We must learn to let go. Resistance and panic will only hinder the inevitable processes of evolutionary transformation. Marko Pogačnik describes what we can expect and how to prepare ourselves to deal with it. He presents simple exercises and meditations that will not only help us survive and adapt, but will also-and more important-help the Earth herself bring forth her true Self.

The study is an attempt to reclaim a preachers role in bringing progress and healing in underdeveloped communities through homilies, particularly, in Venda, rural South Africa. This book proposes a preacher as the transformer, developer and healer of the people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on interviews and field research, the authors explore the sets of ideas Arab tribespeople from Ras Al-Khaimah had about tribe and community; social and economic networks, and jural contracts for livelihoods and profits; their uses of their environments; the moral relations of credit, debt and labour; ruling; economic and political transformations; and ideas of regional history where conflicts were regarded as disputes over sets of ideas, and informal accounts of tribal and local histories. Their lively descriptions and explanations of life before oil portrayed tribal societies whose relationships were moral rather than political and were between jurally equal persons. All lived from their own resources; 'wealth' was material self-sufficiency; 'riches' the richness of social relationships. Political arenas were decentralised and underpinned by common cultural and moral values. Published sources give a wider context to these ideas and events which show the great complexity and differing perspectives of 'life before oil' in the Gulf.

Book The Transformation of Civil Society

Download or read book The Transformation of Civil Society written by William Noll and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2023-06-15 with total page 961 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The catastrophic terror Soviet power unleashed on the Ukrainian countryside in the early 1930s altered every aspect of village life. Based on extensive interviews with villagers throughout Ukraine, The Transformation of Civil Society provides an oral history of the material and cultural destruction sustained in rural Ukraine throughout the Stalinist era. Beginning with wholesale deportations and evictions, followed by the process of collectivization in Ukraine, the Soviet state’s impact on peasant life extended deep into the fabric of society. Targeting the cultural life of these Ukrainians, the 1930s began with the physical repression of religious institutions and personnel, the repression of church ritual, and later, the repression of entertainment and expressive culture such as music making. By bringing to light the experiences of more than four hundred Ukrainians who witnessed the terror of the Stalinist era, William Noll privileges villagers' points of view on the near total destruction of their world and preserves the memory of their civil society. Almost twenty-five years after its Ukrainian publication, The Transformation of Civil Society makes this classic available in English for the first time.

Book Revelation to Transformation

Download or read book Revelation to Transformation written by Paul White and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2011-06-08 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us have become accustomed to the constant preaching and teaching of guilt and condemnation. This slowly but surely pulls our eyes off of the loveliness of the finished work and onto the unfinished areas of our lives. We know that we are flawed; we don't need someone screaming at us to figure that out. Our problem is not the absence of knowledge that we need help. Rather, it is the utter inability to help ourselves. Calvary was God's intervention in all of our issues. By relieving us of the punishment of sin, He is freeing us from the weight of guilt and the fear of death. The author of Hebrews said that when Jesus died, He did so to "deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage" (Hebrews 2:15). Jesus has delivered us from fear of eternal punishment by being punished in our place!
