Book Economic Transfers in the United States

Download or read book Economic Transfers in the United States written by Marilyn Moon and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the definition of an economic transfer—a payment to an individual or institution that does not arise out of current productive activity—has been subject to even wider interpretation. This volume addresses that trend and introduces new methods of measuring transfers in the American economy. Social security, private pension benefits, housing, and health care are traditional kinds of transfers. Accurate measurements of the degree and effect of these and of other, newly interpreted transfers are vital to economic policy making. Though this volume is not directly concerned with policy-making issues, it does impinge on many areas of current public concern; methods of transfer valuation, for example, may affect how we view the status of the aged. Researchers, policy analysts, and those who compile statistics on which social programs are based on will value the diverse approaches of these ten papers and their accompanying comments. Taken together the essays give great insight into the complexities of defining transfers and provide a wealth of new analytic methods. They were developed from material presented at the Income and Wealth Conference on Social Accounting for Transfers held at Madison, Wisconsin, in 1982.

Book The Shared Space

Download or read book The Shared Space written by Milton Santos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-29 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1979. In this forcefully argued book, Milton Santos shows that contemporary explanations of urbanization and spatial organization in underdeveloped countries are inadequate. This failure is attributable to their origins in theories elaborated to explain the development of advanced Western societies. Santos' work provides the basis for the new theory which is so badly needed. He describes the urban economy in these countries in terms of two circuits of activity – an upper circuit consisting of those enterprises and structures which are based on modern technology and are oriented towards the advanced capitalist world, and a lower circuit comprised of more traditional processes and forms of exchange. The dialectical interaction of these two circuits is seen to generate the patterns of growth, forms of State intervention and, above all, the spatial organization characteristic of Third World economies. This was a revision and translation of L’Espace Partagé (1975).

Book excerpt: Introduction to Urban EconomicsWelcome to the fascinating world of urban economics! In this subchapter, we will delve into the fundamental concepts and principles that underpin the economic environment of our cities. Whether you are a student, a professional, or simply curious about the dynamics of urban economies, this introduction will provide you with a solid foundation to navigate the urban economic landscape. Urban economics is the study of how cities function and the economic forces that shape them. Every day, millions of people interact with the urban environment, whether through work, housing, transportation, or leisure activities. Understanding the economic factors that drive these interactions is crucial to comprehending the complexities and opportunities that cities offer. One of the key aspects of urban economics is the concept of agglomeration. Cities are not just random clusters of people and buildings; they are centers of economic activity that attract individuals, firms, and industries. The agglomeration effect arises from the benefits that result from proximity and density, such as increased productivity, knowledge spillovers, and a wider range of goods and services. By understanding how agglomeration shapes urban economies, we can better grasp the dynamics of urban growth and development. Moreover, urban economics explores the role of land and real estate in cities. Land is a finite resource, and its scarcity in urban areas gives rise to unique economic phenomena, such as skyrocketing property prices and the need for efficient land-use planning. The intricate relationship between land, housing markets, and the allocation of resources is a crucial aspect of urban economics, with significant implications for both individuals and policymakers. Transportation is another vital component of urban economics. Efficient transportation systems are the lifeblood of cities, enabling the movement of goods, services, and people. The study of transportation economics provides insights into the challenges of urban mobility, congestion, and the design of sustainable transportation networks. Lastly, urban economics also encompasses the examination of urban inequality and poverty. Cities are often characterized by stark disparities in income, education, and access to opportunities. Understanding the root causes of urban inequality and devising effective policies to address these challenges are essential for creating inclusive and vibrant cities.

Book The Urban Transport Crisis in Emerging Economies

Download or read book The Urban Transport Crisis in Emerging Economies written by Dorina Pojani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume discuses urban transport issues, policies, and initiatives in twelve of the world’s major emerging economies – Brazil, China, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa, Turkey, and Vietnam - countries with large populations that have recently experienced large changes in urban structure, motorization and all the associated social, economic, and environmental impacts in positive and negative senses. Contributions on each of these twelve countries focus on one or more major cities per country. This book aims to fill a gap in the transport literature that is crucial to understanding the needs of a large portion of the world’s urban population, especially in view of the southward shift in economic power. Readers will develop a better understanding of urban transport problems and policies in nations where development levels are below those of richer countries (mainly in the northern hemisphere) but where the rate of economic growth is often increasing at a faster rate than the wealthiest nations.
