Book Technology Transfer Between the US China and Taiwan

Download or read book Technology Transfer Between the US China and Taiwan written by Douglas B. Fuller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the flow of technical knowledge between the US, Taiwan and Mainland China over the last sixty-five years, this book shows that the technical knowledge that has moved between these states is vast and varied. It includes the invention and production of industrial goods, as well as knowledge of the patterns of corporate organization and management. Indeed, this diversity is reflected in the process itself, which is driven both by returning expatriates with knowledge acquired overseas and by successful government intervention in acquiring technology from multinational firms. Technology Transfer Between the US, China and Taiwan engages with the evolving debates on the merits, importance and feasibility of technology transfer in the process of economic development globally, and uses the example of Taiwan to show that multinational corporations can indeed play a positive role in economic development. Further, it reveals the underlying tension between international cooperation and nationalism which inevitably accompanies international exchanges, as well as the delicate balancing act required between knowledge acquisition and dangerous levels of dependency, and the beneficial role of the US in East Asia’s technological development. With contributors from disciplines ranging from history, geography, urban planning, sociology, political science and electrical engineering, this multi-disciplinary book will be of great interest to students and scholars working across a broad range of subjects including Taiwan studies, Chinese studies, economics, business studies and development studies.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diploma Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Trade and Distribution, grade: 2,3, Technical University of Chemnitz (Finanzwissenschaften), course: Diplomantenseminar, language: English, abstract: The discussion about the role of multinational enterprises (MNE) which are transferring their technology to undeveloped and developed countries is one of the most interesting discussions in the international trade theory with its authors in the century of globalisation. Multinational Enterprises are generating and transferring technology know-how, knowledge and innovations of products and processes over national borders to foreign countries for making research and development (R&D) in especially chosen R&D locations. The focus of the following diploma thesis is to search what kind of role multinational enterprises play in a globalised and internalized world by focussing how they make research and development in foreign countries and especially in developing countries as the third world. In the first main part of the following work it will be described what kind of role multinational enterprise play in the century of globalisation. For a better understanding it follows a description what is exactly meant by the process of internalization of the markets and R&D. It will be discussed through theoretical analysis and models how the process to an internalization of R&D function. These will be explained through different theoretical approaches as the horizontal model of James R. Markusen, the vertical model of Helpman and a model of regression which used independent and dependent variables for the analysis. At least in this chapter the specific features of a MNE will be explained by categorising multinational enterprises through different characteristics and afterward the role of MNE in the process of globalisation will be assumed for the international trade between different countries. The second part will be searching what kind of m

Book Organizing Global Technology Flows

Download or read book Organizing Global Technology Flows written by Pierre-Yves Donzé and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on the international transfer of technology in economics and management literature has primarily focused on the role of countries and that of companies, in particular multinational enterprises (MNEs). Similarly, economic and business historians have tended to view international technology transfer as a way for economically ‘backward’ countries to acquire new technologies in order to catch up with more developed economies. This volume provides a more in-depth understanding of how the international transfer of technologies is organized and, in particular, challenges the core-periphery model that is still dominant in the extant literature. By looking beyond national systems of innovation, and statistics on foreign trade, patent registration and foreign direct investment, the book sheds more light on the variety of actors involved in the transfer process (including engineers, entrepreneurs, governments, public bodies, firms, etc.) and on how they make use of a broad set of national and international institutions facilitating technology transfer. Put differently, the volume offers a better understanding of the complexity of global technology flows by examining the role and actions of the different actors involved. By bringing together a number of original case studies covering many different countries over the period from the late 19th to the 21st century, the book demonstrates how technology is being transferred through complex processes, involving a variety of actors from several countries using the national and international institutional frameworks.
