Drawing on formal reviews, journals, letters, autobiographies, commonplace books and marginalia, Jarvis analyses the impact made by travel books on North America during an era of transatlantic strife. Attentive to the role of the periodical press, his book is also the first serious exploration of private reading experiences of travel literature in the Romantic period.

Book Transatlantic Travels in Nineteenth Century Latin America

Download or read book Transatlantic Travels in Nineteenth Century Latin America written by Adriana Méndez Rodenas and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transatlantic Travels in Nineteenth-Century Latin America: European Women Pilgrims retraces the steps of five intrepid “lady travelers” who ventured into the geography of the New World—Mexico, the Southern Cone, Brazil, and the Caribbean—at a crucial historical juncture, the period of political anarchy following the break from Spain and the rise of modernity at the turn of the twentieth century. Traveling as historians, social critics, ethnographers, and artists, Frances Erskine Inglis (1806–82), Maria Graham (1785–1842), Flora Tristan (1803–44), Fredrika Bremer (1801–65), and Adela Breton (1849–1923) reshaped the map of nineteenth-century Latin America. Organized by themes rather than by individual authors, this book examines European women’s travels as a spectrum of narrative discourses, ranging from natural history, history, and ethnography. Women’s social condition becomes a focal point of their travels. By combining diverse genres and perspectives, women’s travel writing ushers a new vision of post-independence societies. The trope of pilgrimage conditions the female travel experience, which suggests both the meta-end of the journey as well as the broader cultural frame shaping their individual itineraries.

Book Transatlantic Women Travelers 1688 1843

Download or read book Transatlantic Women Travelers 1688 1843 written by Misty Krueger and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-12 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new collection explores representations of late seventeenth- through mid-nineteenth-century transatlantic women travelers across a range of historical and literary works. While at one time transatlantic studies concentrated predominantly on men’s travels, this volume highlights the resilience of women who ventured voluntarily and by force across the Atlantic—some seeking mobility, adventure, knowledge, wealth, and freedom, and others surviving subjugation, capture, and enslavement. The essays gathered here concern themselves with the fictional and the historical, national and geographic location, racial and ethnic identities, and the configuration of the transatlantic world in increasingly taught texts such as The Female American and The Woman of Colour, as well as less familiar material such as Merian’s writing on the insects of Surinam and Falconbridge’s travels to Sierra Leone. Intersectional in its approach, and with an afterword by Eve Tavor Bannet, this essential collection will prove indispensable as it provides fresh new perspectives on transatlantic texts and women’s travel therein across the long eighteenth century.

Book excerpt: Written shortly after the advent of new steamships allowing faster travel to the United States, Thomas Fitzpatrick turns his pen to a description of the ""principal States of New England"" -New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington. Originally published in 1891, Fitzpatrick aims not only to describe America in relation to her experiment with democracy, but also to lay open the beauty of America to a new class of traveler-those who new technology will allow to undertake transatlantic travel within the limits of short leisure time. In the mode of an early travel guide, Fitzpatrick's hope is to provide a ""friendly"" guide which will induce his fellow countrymen to take advantage of new steamships, with their safer and shorter journeys to the United States, so that they themselves can view the natural beauty of the American continent and man-made achievements of her cities.
