Excerpt: ...research may throw some light on this difficult subject. At all events in one way this memorandum is highly interesting. It gives us a list of some 70 names of men, chiefly Danish men, in the wiking period. So old a Danish name-roll as this has never been found before. In order that we may use this costly list the better, I here arrange the names in alphabetical order, numbering them, and placing after them the line in which they appear. MENSNAMES. NOTE.--D0mesday equivalents added by Rev. E. MAULE COLE, M.A., F.G.S.. ADSCEORL (3).. CETEL presbyter (7) (Chetel).. COLBRANI) clericus (5) (Col-brand). EDASTAN ulfer (6). EDRIC (6). ELEWIN z/el SNEI. (5, 6) (Elwin) (Snell ELFRIC (I) ELNOD freer (6). ELWEGGA (2, 3). FARDAIN greua (2) ( Fardan). 29. 30. FOLCER (4). referring to Philip's excellent " Atlas of the Counties of England," fol. London 1875, we see that they are all in South, Yorkshire, where we have BARNBY, BRAYTON, BROTHERTON, several places called CAR, KEREBY, and also HO, HILLAM. These spots are in the Wapenstakes of Barkeston and Sirack. The whole list of Names was originally between 70 and 80, are so uncommon and particular that we may hope, some day, to find a key to them. Till then we must wait. Philologically many of these Names are rare and costly. One in particular is very scarce. It is MERLESWAIN. This chieftain (if it be the same man) is mentioned I. 4937, 8 of Gaimar's Estorie des Engles, in connection with the restoration of Earl Godwine in I052. Gaimar introduces the " chevaler " as MARLESWAIN aveit a non, Daneis esteit, riche e baron. In the O. Engl. Chronicle we are told that when Eadgar the Child fled to Scotland for shelter in king Malcolm's court, he was accompanied by his...

Download or read book Transactions of the Yorkshire Dialect Society Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by Yorkshire Dialect Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Yorkshire Dialect Society, Vol. 4 The parish of Halifax is a natural, well-defined portion of the West Riding. It practically embraces the whole area drained by the Calder, and tributaries, issuing above the eastern boundaries of Brighouse and Rastrick, and covers 129 square miles. Its altitude above sea-level ranges from 200ft. at Brighouse to 1573ft. at Dove Stones, Wadsworth. The Calder enters at Todmorden, Hows north-east to Hebden Bridge, then curves to a south-easterly direction, and, after a course of about sixteen miles, leaves the parish at Anchor Pit, a little below Brighouse. This main river divides its drainage area, in this district, into two almost equal halves. Numerous tributaries, north and south, have cut deep lateral valleys and deans; these, in turn, have each their lateral beck, and clough streams, and so on, until the ultimate springs on the hill sides and tops are reached. The wearing down of these continuous valleys, deans, and cloughs has produced a remarkable series of intervening hills. To seek the primary cause of these varied physiographical features we must go back to a remote geological period. Countless ages an extensive area, including this portion of Yorkshire, formed part of a large estuary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
