Yours truly, NORTON S. TOWNSHEND. By these documents you see that neither of these States have a State Agricultural College, under State patronage, if they have under any patronage. There is no such school in Massachusetts. It is true that in some of the colleges in different States there has been established a Professorship of lgrriculture. There is one such in Yale College. We can say then, and with pride and satisfaction we say it, that Michigan is the first of these United States to try the experiment of establishing a State Agricultural School and experimental and model farm, under government patronage. We hope and trust the experiment will prove an eminently successful one. It is true, the enterprise is one of vast importance, and by the people of the State, by the Legislature, and by yourselves it has been duly considered, and you have decided that in order to render the institution of the highest practical utility, it should be established upon its own basis, and entirely seperate from any other institution. But although you have arrived at this conclusion, it is right that you should examine the arguments of those who, after giving the subject some attention, "cannot believe" that in establishing an independent school "the best thing has been done." Hence I am pleased to have the opportunity of laying before you, as I have done, the written arguments and...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Hampshire Agricultural Society, 1865 Horticultural pursuits were deemed so' honorable amongst the Romans, that many of their distinguished families derived their' surnames from some species of fruit or vegetable, which they were celebrated for cultivating. If our ladies, who cultivate flowers at the present day do not succeed in handing down surnames to future generations, they may, if they will, have their tastes improved, - their ideas of true beauty enlarged, yea, even their tempers improved, by mingling. Much with the soft-hued, fragrant pansies, the pleasure-giving mignonette, the waxen, modest lilly, and the clumpy Pinks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address Delivered Before the New-Hampshire State Agricultural Society, at Its Second Annual Exhibition, in Manchester, October 8th, 9th and 10th, 1851 Sions and employments. In new-england there is land enough, and to Spare. It appears from the recent report of the valuar tion committee of Massachusetts, that if forest be excluded, not more than one-fourth of her remaining improvable territory is under cultivation. If the other three-fourths were only as highly improved, her agricultural products would be quadrupled; but much of it is capable of higher cultivation, and of producing crops many times larger than the present amount. This would enable her \to sustain a population of many millions. Away, then, with the apprehension that new-england cannot sustain, by her agricultural products, her swarming population! She may not only greatly multiply her present crops, but introduce other products equally important with any now under cultivation. What a vast amount of trade has resulted by the introduction of flax from Egypt, which by recent improvements in mechani cal and chemical science, may yet become as important to the free labor' of the North, as cotton is to the slave labor of the South! What an amount of commerce has been created by the introduction of the mulberry from Eastern Asia into Europe, which gives employment to millions, and clothes other millions with their silken fabrics! 1 By the introduction of the potato from South America, which has for ages fed the famishing millions of Ireland, and the partial loss of which, within a few years, has produced starvation and misery in that ill-fated country, and such pecuniary loss and lamentation through the civilized world! By the introduction of wheat, which gives immense wealth to the rising empire of the West, freights innu merable cars and ships, and feeds millions in our own and other countries! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Hampshire Agricultural Society: For the Year 1899 The exhibition in the hall was a superior one. Vegetables, fruit flowers and the handiwork of the ladies, all combined to Show the result of successful farming for the season. The display of potatoes and onions was very fine, and the tastily arranged tables of fruit and flowers spoke well for the Hampshire County farmers in a year when fruit is not plenty. In one corner of the hall was a room fitted up with a very choice collection of antique furniture, by the wife of the president and a friend, with many relics of a former generation. This feature of the exhibition was a source of much interest to all visitors of the fair. It was easy to observe in all departments of the fair that it was purely agricultural. The managers had planned for an honest exhibition of the products of the farm, and the farmers had brought their products and joined heartily with their officers In making it a representative farmers' festival, without any catch penny side shows and acrobatic performances. But best of all was the exhibition of zeal and enthusiasm on the part of the officers of the society. The society has struggled under somewhat adverse condi tions for some years, till new life has been infused, and its officers are using every effort to bring the fair and the society to a higher level, and whose efforts meet with very high commendation from your Inspector. In that county, it was calculated that one-fifth of the land was occupied by thorn hedges! The fields were small, generally from three to five acres. The hedges were in bad condition, and formed a nursery for all kinds of weeds. On many farms the interior fences are now thrown down and the hurdle fence introduced with the greatest success. It may be necessary to premise that it is not contemplated to run hurdles around all the lots where fences formerly existed, by any means. No fences are necessary for the separation of grain crops, but only around pasture allotments, or where cattle may be allowed temporarily to graze. Permanent, and if possible, live fences, such as thorn, should be run round the exterior of every farm, and these, were it only for good neighborh0od, ought to be kept to be constructed, enclosing door-yard, garden, orchard and bamyard, With regard to the farm, great division lines ought to be laid permanently down, as always m-em' 1, either for shelter or division.
