This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society, Vol. 2 The Council of the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society are sorry to have to employ the same expression of regret, on the publication of this the Second Volume of their Transactions, as they did on the occasion of that of the First. The small subscription and the necessarily expensive character of the Public Meetings of the Society alike hinder that more frequent issue which would otherwise be practicable. They desire to add that it lies in the power of the members themselves to rectify the evil of which they complain. The Council have every reason to be satisfied with the reception accorded by Archaeologists to the former volume, and confidently anticipate a similar amount of favour for that now offered to the reader. As in the previous pages, the range of subjects in those which follow embraces the majority of the departments most interesting to a London and Middlesex Archaeologist. Saxon Antiquities, Mediaeval Architecture, Manuscripts, Parochial and Monastic History, Biography, Heraldry, Numismatics, &c., will be found included in the list. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society, Vol. 1 IN presenting to the Members of the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society the First Volume of its Transactions, the Council have to express their deep regret at the long and wearisome delay which has attended its publication - a delay, however, which has arisen from circumstances entirely beyond their powers of control. They trust, nevertheless, that it will be found worthy alike of the Authors and of the Mem bers at large, and that the length of time which has elapsed since the issue of the first portion in the July of 1856 will not be considered unpardonable, when the varied and interesting nature of the contents of the entire volume are duly taken into consideration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society, 1905, Vol. 1 It may also be observed that, as the Society is nearing the Jubilee of its existence, many of its recent meetings have been held at places which, though new to present members, have been previously visited by the Society, and do not therefore afford material for new papers in its Transactions, having been adequately dealt with in earlier volumes. There is, however, no lack of original work which urgently calls for labourers in the broad field of research which is the domain of this Society; and the Council earnestly invite the members of the Society, especially those belong ing to the younger generation of archaeologists, to undertake specific enquiries into the many problems of London archaeology which still te main Open, and to submit to the consideration of the Society the results of their researches. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Historic Society, Vol. 2: Of Lancashire and Cheshire The migrations within the limited space of our own island may not have produced the wonderful effects which we, during the last fifteen years, have witnessed through that great exodus which bore away so many of the natives of the sister island to the United States and the Colonies; still, though they may not have exhibited so marvellous a train of moral and social results, they are not destitute of interest; and at the conference of the Social Science Association of 1860, one part of this subject, namely, the manner in which the Irish labourer was competing with, and in many cases supplanting, the native-born labourer of Glasgow, was mentioned by Sir James Emerson Tennent, no mean authority, as a subject peculiarly worthy of investigation. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Transactions of the East Riding Antiquarian Society, Vol. 2: For the Year Ending 24th September, 1894 The meetings on both days proved a most gratifying success, the only drawback being the rainy weather of the last day. The first winter meeting was held December 4th, 1893, in the Town Hall, Hull, when the Mayor (councillor Charles Richardson) occupied the chair, and in a genial speech welcomed the Society. Several interesting objects were placed on the tables by the members. Mr. J. G. Hall exhibited, and gave a short address on, a prehistoric burial urn he had recently found at Sancton. Mr. J. H. Hirst shewed and explained two rubbings from ancient brasses. One was that of Nicholas de Luda, in Cottingham church, and the other that of Smith, in the church of St. Mary's, Hull. Mr. Hirst also prepared and placed before the meeting, a large suggestive ground plan of the Priory Church of Watton, and an ingenious model Shewing the system of rotatory windows or turn tables, which afforded means of communication between the sexes in double monasteries. The president exhibited and described a large number of tiles, carved stonework, and fragments of ancient glass, found at Watton during the recent excavations. The whole of the Insignia and Plate of the Corporation of Hull were exhibited, and a paper prepared by Mr. W. H. St. John Hope, m.a., was read, which appears in our transactions.
