Book Transactions of the Department of Archaeology Free Museum of Science and Art Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Transactions of the Department of Archaeology Free Museum of Science and Art Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by University Of Pennsylvania Museum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Department of Archaeology, Free Museum of Science and Art, Vol. 1 The great palaces at Knossos and Phaestos complete each other architec turally, the former giving an elevation of three or even four stories, the latter furnishing a ground plan simple and grandiose, as it has been called by Mr. Evans. In both we see the houses of rich princes, who loved luxury, who patronized the arts of builder, sculptor and painter, and used the talents of the scribe as well. The smaller finds at Knossos and Aghia Triadha by their variety and number give us a fuller knowledge of this prehistoric civilization than we have of many a later stage of culture; but, of this as of most subjects which deserve any investigation, the more we know, the more we want to know. Palaces and tombs are not sufficient: we want also the homes of the people, for without an insight into the life of the many, we cannot rightly judge the civilization of any period. By a singular chance, a well-preserved town, dating from the earlier period of the great palace at Knossos (about 1800-1500 bc.) and containing a large quantity of tools, pottery and other articles of daily use, has been brought to light by the excavations of Americans (people of the Great Democracy as Cretans call us) at Gournia, on the north shore of the Isthmus that connects the east end of the island with the rest of Crete. It is not rash to suppose that this is one of the ninety cities mentioned by Homer in the famous passage of the Odyssey quoted above. Book Dictionary of Bibliographic Abbreviations Found in the Scholarship of Classical Studies and Related Disciplines

Download or read book Dictionary of Bibliographic Abbreviations Found in the Scholarship of Classical Studies and Related Disciplines written by Jean S. Wellington and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-08-30 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trying to identify abbreviated titles of journals and standard bibliographic works is a major difficulty facing researchers and librarians in the field of Classical Studies. This revised edition has been greatly expanded, with nearly twice the abbreviations (17,000) and bibliographic entries (12,400) as the first edition. Also, the Greek and Cyrillic abbreviations have increased by seven and four fold respectively. Abbreviations for internet sites are now included, as are those for associations in the broad area of Classical Studies. There are also more entries for Eastern European and regional archaeological publications. This revised volume is divided into two parts. Part One consists of an alphabetical listing of bibliographic abbreviations found in the scholarship of classical studies and related disciplines. Meanwhile, Part Two is an alphabetically arranged bibliographic descriptions for the works published in classical studies and related disciplines. Special efforts were made to increase the coverage in peripheral areas, making this new edition a useful reference tool for scholars in all subjects of study in the ancient and medieval world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At the close of the Victorian era, two generations of intrepid women abandoned Grand Tour travel for the rigors of archaeological expeditions, shining the light of scientific exploration on Old World antiquity. Breaking Ground highlights the remarkable careers of twelve pioneers-a compelling narrative of personal, social, intellectual, and historical achievement." -Claire Lyons, The Getty Museum "Behind these pioneering women lie a wide range of fascinating and inspiring life stories. Though each of their tales is unique, they were all formidable scholars whose important contributions changed the field of archaeology. Kudos to the authors for making their stories and accomplishments known to us all!" -Jodi Magness, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill This book presents twelve fascinating women whose contributions to the development and progress of Old World archaeology---in an area ranging from Italy to Mesopotamia---have been immeasurable. Each essay in this collection examines the life of a pioneer archaeologist in the early days of the discipline, tracing her path from education in the classics to travel and exploration and eventual international recognition in the field of archaeology. The lives of these women may serve as models both for those interested in gender studies and the history of archaeology because in fact, they broke ground both as women and as archaeologists. The interest inherent in these biographies will reach well beyond defined disciplines and subdisciplines, for the life of each of these exciting and accomplished individuals is an adventure story in itself

Book Richard Berry Seager

Download or read book Richard Berry Seager written by Marshall Joseph Becker and published by UPenn Museum of Archaeology. This book was released on 1997-01-29 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the life of Richard Seager is important for two reasons. First, it provides a glimpse of a character of a member of the second generation of researchers to work in Cretan archaeology and, second, Seager and his generation helped form our own preconceptions about the early history of Greece. His underlying thesis, that the Early Minoan society was the first European civilization, thus the foundation of Greek and later Western history, is considered valid today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The storage of staples and its importance for the functioning of Cretan Bronze Age society has become an active topic of debate. This study reassesses the intrinsic relationship between storage and sociopolitical complexity by combining testimonies on the storage of staples from palatial, nonpalatial elite, and ordinary domestic contexts dated to the LM I period. The main goals are (1) to examine a wide range of information concerned with the storage of staples; (2) to develop a comprehensive model to explain how storage strategies operate within LM I societies; and (3) to infer sociopolitical and socio-economic levels of interaction among the different social sectors operating within LM I societies (mainly LM IB societies).

Book excerpt: Kavousi I is the initial volume of the Kavousi Excavation Series, which presents the final report of the Kavousi Project, a program of archaeological investigation near the modern village of Kavousi in eastern Crete. Subsequent volumes will publish the results of the 1987-1992 excavations at the Vronda and Kastro sites in the Siteia Mountains overlooking Kavousi and of the cleaning and new study of the excavations of Harriet Boyd in 1900 and 1901. This volume, Kavousi I: The Archaeological Survey of the Kavousi Region, provides a comprehensive look at the topography of the area, its natural resources, and the way in which the local people interacted with them over time, as shown in the changing pattern of settlement. It sets the stage for the report on the excavations and provides an introduction to the local soils and to the pottery classification used by the excavators.
