Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers (Instituted 1852), Vol. 66: March, 1910 The matter of pavements in Chicago is in some respects a recent one, as compared with some eastern cities. Articles on New York 100 years ago state that that city was tolerably well paved; probably Philadelphia and Boston were also; certainly, Albany was, at the time of Fulton's first trip with his steamboat. Sixty years ago, how ever, Chicago had no pavements except plank and graveled roads, though in 1860 it was a city of 100000 inhabitants. The condition of the streets can easily be imagined. There are photographs in existence showing that evidently every lot owner established his own grade for his sidewalk; and Clark St. Had an appearance which can only be matched in the smallest towns of the West. In 1855 two or three squares were paved with limestone blocks, and at about the same time some cobblestone pavement was laid. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Vol. 38: Instituted 1852 The questions involved in the financial management of a municipal water-works system are often very interesting, even though they may be somewhat complicated, and it is doubtless owing to the difficulties encountered in the analysis of the problem that no generally accepted principles of such management have yet been formulated. Various methods of procedure have been adopted in different places, but rarely has it happened that any one of them received general approbation or was adopted elsewhere without more or less modification. In most places the exercise of sound judgment is hampered by considerations of expediency, and hence temporary or superficial plans of financial management are in vogue which must sooner or later be materially amended. Much confusion is also caused by the careless use of terms in the discussion of the subject, as well as in the classification of the various items of income or expense. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Vol. 47: Instituted 1852 The history of the experiments to be described may be considered as properly beginning in the summer of 1893, when the writers became associated in the Engineering Department then organized by the Board of Water Commissioners of the City of Detroit, Mich., the Regulations governing which prescribing, as among the duties of the Civil Engineer, the head of that Department, that "He shall particularly have charge of the Distribution System, and shall make it his especial study and care that the said system shall be as perfect as possible." Beginning with such crude instruments as Bourdon gauges, and gradually working up past the mercury column to the more delicate apparatus to be described later, many valuable and interesting data were obtained in the next three years, which would compare not unfavorably with work done by others, and which, from time to time, has been presented before this and similar societies; but the opportunity of taking up this particular investigation systematically, though long looked forward to, did not offer itself until the fall of 1896, when the Engineering Department recommended, and the Board ordered, the laying of a 30-in. main through a distance of about 5 000 ft. to connect two older mains. The course selected for this main embraced ten rightangled deflections, including the two at the beginning and end, the deflections being alternately to the right and left. In the design of this work, which was immediately constructed, provision was made for the experiments under consideration. Further constructions in 1898 enabled the investigations to be extended to 16-in. and 12-in. pipe, which work has been carried on since at intervals as opportunity occurred. Descriptions of these constructions will be found in this paper under the headings, "Thirty-Inch Cast-iron Pipe," "Sixteen-Inch Cast-iron Pipe" and "Twelve-Inch Cast-iron Pipe." Object of the Experiments. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the effect of curvature upon the flow of water in closed circular conduits under pressure, and, particularly, to examine the effect of changes in radius of curvature upon the losses of head in those cases occurring in ordinary water-works distribution systems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers (Instituted 1852), Vol. 63: June, 1909 This is not only the fairest method Of letting caisson work, but it is the only method which should be adopted; for if the contract is made for a lump sum to bed - rock, either the contractor must bid excessively high to allow for uncertainties, or run a good chance of losing his anticipated profits and much more besides. This is especially true where the borings are what are known as wash borings, which scarcely ever reach rock, but stop at the hardpan. This state ment applies at least to wash borings made for sky-scrapers, although it does not apply to some which have been made for some of the railroads, where the borings have reached bed-rock by the use Of an occasional small charge of dynamite. Diamond-drill borings, of course, will find rock accurately, but only for the exact Spot of the drill hole; for bed-rock here, known as New York gneiss, is very irregular, in fact it was found to be 6 ft. Higher in one caisson than in another, although the two caissons were only 12 in. Apart, each landing on a comparatively at rock. In another case we landed one end Of a caisson, 14 ft. Long, on bed-rock and then had to dig 14 ft. Deep at the other end to find rock. This is mentioned because the surface of the rock under the Singer Building is exceptionally level, as shown by the cross-sections Of the caissons. Fig. 1. The size Of the lot is approximately 75 ft. On Broadway and 115 ft. Deep on the south side. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
