This book was released on 2016-11-26 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the American Microscopical Society, 1918, Vol. 37: Published Quarterly by the Society SO much has been said about insects since the War began that it is, I think, advisable that some attempt should be made to sum marize our knowledge of the more important insect-borne diseases and their vectors. While insects have long been suspected of being responsible for the transmission Of serious diseases, it may be said that practically the whole of our knowledge of insects in this role has been acquired within the past twenty years. SO rapidly, how ever, has the charge of this offence been made out against them that, although it is common knowledge they have been proved guilty, it is not generally realized upon how many counts the verdict rests. It has lately been my good fortune to give class instruction for the War Office to officers of the R. A. M. C. Who are proceed ing to the East, and, in order to bring home to my audience the importance of the connection between insects and disease, I have compiled the tables' which I now publish. These can in no way claim to be complete, but merely present the more important insect bome diseases, including important human diseases that on certain grounds are suspected of having insect vectors. With these tables I also publish one (table VI) which includes the chief insects and acarina that are directly the cause of disease in man and his domestic animals. TO complete the list of insect-transmitted diseases would demand the consideration not only of other mammals as hosts, but also Of avian and reptilian hosts. In the present instance this would be to carry the subject beyond general interest, but it must be remembered, therefore, that, long as the present list Of charges is, insects are not here arraigned on all the counts that might with justice be preferred against them. Reprinted from Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Sept. 15, 1917; xx, 18. During the last few years medical entomology has been rapidly establishing itself an an invaluable branch of preventive medicine, and with the outbreak Of the present War a great deal of interest and study has been devoted to this subject in Europe, notably in connection with the transmission of typhus fever by lice, and the dissemination Of bacteria and other organisms by ies. Moreover, the importance of insect vectors has been generally realized, and many of the astonishing interactions between pathogenic micro organisms and certain arthropoda have become popular knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the American Microscopical Society, Vol. 36: July, 1917 Contribution from the Entomological Laboratory, Kansas State Agricultural College, Woods Hole, Mass. Owing to the fact that the known marine spe cies of that locality intermingle in the same habitats, and that some of them have been reported from both f resh-water and terrestial conditions, it was necessary to identify the enchytraids from the various collecting grounds about Woods Hole in order to avoid error in handling immature individuals and to insure accuracy in the identity of the materials used. In spite of the fact that two species occur in great abundance in the environs of Woods Hole and certain other parts of the Atlantic Coast, they have received scant attention from workers in any of the fields of zoology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the American Microscopical Society, 1911, Vol. 30: Published Quarterly by the Society If my informant was correct in his dates, the third appearance would occur at high tide. It is possible that the first appearance of the season, involving a release of gametes, is stimulated by low tide or by the coincidence of low tide and approaching dark; that the time necessary for renewal of reproductive bodies has been established at approximately the lunar month by a series of circum stances, internal and external; and that the release of the sexual products occurs on the first approach of dark after their maturity irrespective of the height of the tide at the time. Parallel instances of periodicity in the formation and release of sexual bodies are numerous, in, which both tide and light appear to play a part. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the American Microscopical Society, 1919, Vol. 38: Published Quarterly by the Society Learn drawing - that you may set down clearly and usefully, records of such things as cannot be described in words, either to assist your own memory of them, or to convey distinct ideas of them to other people. Ruskin. Although many excellent books have been published concerning drawings and the processes involved in reproducing them, a beginner in science can consume hours in attempting to find within their covers the kind of information he desires. The books on drawing are usually written for artists who desire effect and not scientific accuracy, and those that deal with methods of reproduction serve as text-books for journeymen interested in the commercial phases of the work. In this article, therefore, an attempt will be made to set forth simply and concretely what points should be considered in making a draw ing; to tell which media are best for certain classes of work; to give some idea of how the drawings are reproduced, together With the limitations imposed by photo-mechanical methods. A black picture on a white background gives the best contrast for reproduction. In numerous subjects the form and texture can be brought out equally well in black ink, in crayon, in water-color, or a combination of these. One of these media may show the points which need emphasis better than another. Therefore, before mak ing drawings for a paper, an author should study the illustrations in the journal in which he expects to publish and select the style best suited to his subject. Skill may well be considered also, as a simple outline in ink is preferable to an elaborate picture poorly executed. Manuscripts Which contain drawings that can be reproduced as line or half-tone engravings are more readily accepted by editors as they can be published with less expense. The extra cost of plates requir ing lithography, heliotypy, or photogravure sometimes must be paid by the author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the American Microscopical Society, Vol. 39: January, 1920 From this it is seen that the degree of infestation of the host is comparatively small. Whereas the number of adults met with was quite limited, larvae were very plentiful when present at all. In situ all of the adults and most of the larvae were found free in the stomach or intestine, but many larvae - forty-one in the case of the third fish in the table - were attached to the bottoms of deep pits in the mucosa of the pyloric region of the stomach. These pits were not mere depressions of the wall of the stomach but actual cavities, as shown in figure 7, bordered by a pronounced annular thickening of the mucous membrane and as much as 2mm. In dia meter. Larvae ranging in size from almost the smallest met with to those near the adult stage in development were tightly crowded into these pits and at the same time strongly contracted longitudinally.
