Book Black Dahlia White Rose

Download or read book Black Dahlia White Rose written by Joyce Carol Oates and published by Ecco. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A mesmerizing storyteller who seems almost unnaturally able to enter the tormented inner lives of her characters.” —Denver Post Black Dahlia & White Rose is a brilliant collection of short fiction from National Book Award winner and New York Times bestselling author Joyce Carol Oates, one of the most acclaimed writers of our time. These stores, at once lyrical and unsettling, shine with the author’s trademark fascination with finding the unpredictable amidst the prosaic—from her imaginative recreation of friendship between two tragically doomed young women (Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Short), to the tale of an infidelity as deeply human as it is otherworldly. Black Dahlia & White Rose is a major offering from one of the most important artists in contemporary American literature; a superb collection that showcases Joyce Carol Oates’s ferocious energy and darkly imaginative storytelling power.

Book Excavations at Nemea The early Hellenistic Stadium

Download or read book Excavations at Nemea The early Hellenistic Stadium written by Darice Elizabeth Birge and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1974, under the direction of Stephen G. Miller, the Classics Department of the University of California, Berkeley, has been excavating at Nemea, one of four sites in Greece of ancient athletic games and festivals. This second volume in theExcavations at Nemeaseries presents the Early Hellenistic stadium, used to celebrate the games from around 330 to 271 b.c. The presentation of remains includes findings on related structures--the entrance tunnel, with its ancient graffiti, and the Apodyterion, or undressing room, used by the athletes who competed--as well as on the track, the hydraulic system, the seating for judges and spectators, the starting line, the starting mechanism, and the turning post for foot races. All the structures and artifacts are set into the broader context of other contemporaneous stadia. The contributing authors provide insight into the Games at Nemea by analyzing the coins found at the site and relating them to the makeup of the crowds and by giving a human dimension to the Games by focusing on an inscription honoring the death of a Lydian there. The architectural remains at Nemea give a "stop action" picture of the stadium and the activities associated with it at the beginning of the Hellenistic era. They represent evidence of an entertainment industry that began to develop, in both theatrical performances and athletic contests, in the time of Alexander the Great--one that set apart professional performers from citizen spectators, a separation that also reflected changes in Hellenistic education and society.

Book Transnational Writing Education

Download or read book Transnational Writing Education written by Xiaoye You and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguing that writing teachers need to enable students to recognize, negotiate with, deconstruct, and transcend national, racial, ethnic, and linguistic boundaries, this volume proposes a "transnational" framework as an alternative approach to literacy education and as a vital component to cultivating students as global citizens. In a field of evolving literacy practices, this volume builds off the three pillars of transnational writing education—translingualism, transculturalism, and cosmopolitanism—and offers both conceptual and practice-based support for scholars, students, and educators in order to address current issues of inclusion, multilingual learning, and diversity.

Book Greek and Roman Coins in the Athenian Agora

Download or read book Greek and Roman Coins in the Athenian Agora written by Fred S. Kleiner and published by ASCSA. This book was released on 1975 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 75,000 coins have been found during excavations at the Agora, many minted in the city but others brought from Athens's far-flung commercial contacts. In addition to the mostly bronze and copper coins themselves, a building that may have served as the Athenian mint is described in this booklet. After describing the physical techniques of production, the author takes a chronological approach and includes numerous black and white photographs, making this concise guide a useful aid to the identification of lower-value Greek and Roman coinage.
