Book Transactions 1880 81 Vol 30 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Transactions 1880 81 Vol 30 Classic Reprint written by Inst. Of Mining And Mechanica Engineers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions, 1880-81, Vol. 30 Perhaps at no time in the history of mining has a larger quantity of mineral been brought to the surface than during the year 1880 - 81, and it would naturally be thought from this circumstance that the profession of mining was in a prosperous condition, whereas, unfortunately, the reverse is the fact, and never has the pressure of adverse times been so severely felt. The Institute has suffered from this condition of things, but not to the extent that might have been anticipated. The total number of members has decreased by 36, but the income from all sources has increased. This is attributable to the larger amount of arrears that has been collected. The accumulation of arrears has seriously occupied the attention of the Council for some time past, and although the evil is great as regards the Institute, it is one that is not confined to it alone, for it forms a serious item in the balance sheets of other Societies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions, Vol. 7: August, 1878 Having been personally familiar with the operations of these gentle men during the years 1827 and '29, and well acquainted with Josiah 'hite, who then resided at Mauch Chunk, which was my engineering home for three years, I here take occasion to record that Mr. White was one of the most remarkable men of that period. His natural ingenuity was almost marvelous; which, joined to intelligent foresight and the most untiring energy and perseverance, enabled him to overcome engineering difficulties almost as quickly as they were encountered. At the period of my arrival in Mauch Chunk Mr. White was engaged in changing the system of transporting coal from the summit of the broad-top Mountain (from the 60 feet thick bed of anthracite coal) by substituting a railroad for the turnpike. The turnpike was an admirable Toad, and so well graded that a large portion of it was used for the bed of the railroad then being laid. It was a gravity railroad, having a gauge of 3 feet 6 inches and a length of 9 miles. It terminated at the head of the inclined plane at Mauch Chunk, which was then in use for letting down coal to the arks, in which it was conveyed by the then existing descending navigation on the Lehigh and Delaware rivers to the City of Philadelphia. On the Lehigh, Messrs. \vhite and Hazard had constructed an artificial navigation, consisting of dams and movable gates, and the arks were sluiced from pool to pool for 47 miles, to Easton, on the Delaware. Download or read book Transactions Vol 15 written by American Society Of Civil Engineers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions, Vol. 15: July, 1886 Next in importance to municipal engineering, I consider the work of the railroad engineer. During 1885 about 3 000 miles of railroad were constructed in the United States. This is less than for any one year since 1878; yet there seems now to be some revival in railroad construction, as from January lst to June 1st, 1886, - 1 100 miles of railroad have been constructed, as against 600 miles during the corresponding period of 1885. The total mileage of railways in the United States may now be taken as about 129 500 miles. The rapid increase of railroad traffic, and the introduction of freight cars carrying as much as 60 000 pounds, has directed the attention of railroad managers to the necessity for the improvement of brakes for freight trains. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions, 1912, Vol. 33 AM one Of those who have for many years watched with keen interest all movements having for their Object the improvement Of health and of health conditions. I have tried to understand them and the facts upon which they were based, and to keep in touch with developments as they arose. We have arrived at a point when no one would care to deny that the good health Of the people should be one of the most important Objects Of good government, whether national or local. It is also fully realised (to quote the words Of the majority report Of the Poor Law Commission) that to the extent to which we can eliminate or diminish sickness among the poor, we shall eliminate or diminish one half the existing amount Of pauperism; words not very different, however, to those used by Sir Edwin Chadwick and Mr. Nassau Senior, over seventy years ago! Book Transactions Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Transactions Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Warren Academy of Sciences and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions, Vol. 2 Address of the President of the Warren Academy of Sciences at the Eighth Annual Meeting, October 20, 1911. In my paper tonight I shall first touch upon a few notions of modern scientists regarding the now available sources of energy, some of which are eternal in their potency; others doomed in time to pass away and become a matter of ancient history. In a paper of this nature I cannot treat the matter exhaustively, - nay, I am not capable, if I chose, to do so. I shall merely try to indicate in a general way the trend of science in its search for cheap, economi cal sources of power, and point out some of the means which science will in future be forced to utilize as sources of energy - forced to use them for at least two reasons: first, because they will prove more efficient and economical, producing higher per cent of work from the total energy applied, second because the world's failing supply of fuel will render such economy an absolute necessity. That the resources of the earth are limited is well understood. We derive all our energy directly or indirectly from the sun, whether by using wood, coal, oil, gas, or energy generated by water power. Let us consider these for a moment. The use of wood as a fuel is, of course, a limited matter and as civilization advances and its vanguard destroys the forests, the available wood is rapidly con sumed. What is left must be carefully conserved and husbanded for future lumber. The use of wood as fuel, then, must largely cease in future. The same with oil and gas. In Warren we can well understand the case. The supply of oil and gas is not indefinite nor infinite, and, so far as we know, is not recuperating in quantity in any way, to replace what is used. New fields and large ones may be discovered but the time will ultimately come when there will be no oil, no gas.
