Book excerpt: This study is designed to investigate the relationship between transformational leadership and volunteer engagement in faith-based non-profit organizations (NPOs). NPOs needed engaged volunteers to fulfill their organization's mission, growth, and sustainability. The facts of transformational leadership and its relationship to volunteer engagement make it essential to understand the importance and benefits of volunteering and volunteers on the society at large, the individual volunteer, and volunteer organization. When NPOs use transformational leadership knowledge, their leaders may bring about social change through increased volunteer job satisfaction and performance, increasing organizational survivability. The continuous future success of volunteer programs run in a non-profit organization depends on those organizations' ability to attract, engage, and retain volunteers. Therefore, this quantitative study is focused on a correlational study between transformational leadership and volunteer engagement in non-profit organizations, specifically faith-based entities in Minnesota. In the analysis, transformational leadership was correlated with the three aspects of volunteer engagement (vigor, dedication, and absorption), and the results indicated a strong positive correlation between the constructs. Even though studies have shown that transformational leadership correlates to employee engagement positively, only some studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of this leadership style on volunteers. The data collected from this study indicates and supports the theory that transformational leadership has a positive relationship with volunteer engagement in faith-based NPOs. Therefore, the findings of this study supplemented the existing research and academic knowledge on the relationship between transformational leadership and volunteer engagement in non-profit organizations. It also provided new research on what non-profit organizations can do to help increase their volunteer engagement.
