Book excerpt: According to the assumptions of classical economics, the price should be set at the intersection of the supply and demand curve under the assumption of full information and rationality of market participants. However, in health care pricing is often regulated and price is set by the regulatory body. Due to the fact that the regulations in terms of pricing include activities that lead to price-setting of a good (health service), costs associated with these activities should be treated as transaction costs. The study is the result of the research on the transaction costs of the pricing of health services. The primary objective of the study is to identify the transaction costs occurring during the pricing of health services and characterize the factors that affect the level of transaction costs. An additional objective of this study is to link the conclusions about the level of transaction costs to the conclusions regarding the accuracy of the cost-based pricing in health care. The empirical part of the work was carried out based on the analysis of primary and secondary sources. Its aim was to present how pricing is organized in seventeen countries selected.

Book excerpt: This book contains the papers that were presented in 1994 at the conference "Transaction Cost Economics and Beyond" organized by GRASP at the Tinbergen Institute in Rotterdam. It is generally recognized that transaction cost economics (TCE) is at the heart of the new theory of the firm. It is a well established research program with a well developed theoretical framework and good results in empirical testing. However, critics consider the approach too limited to understand the essential characteristics of such complex organizations like firms. Critics plea convincingly for the need to go beyond the original TCE framework and to develop a more pluralistic approach towards issues of economic organization. The new theory of the firm can only be further developed when scholars are willing to debate the issues in an open-minded, academic way. I thank the participants of the conference very much for putting so much effort in writing their papers and for their contribution to an open and stimulating discussion. It is my wish that this book contributes to the further deve lopment of the theory of the firm and that it helps us to a better understan ding of the complexities of economic organization. This dissertation does not attempt to provide a solution to the <I>macroeconomic debate about health care costs. It rather focuses on <I>microeconomics and how health systems (private entities) organize themselves - cooperate, integrate, and disintegrate - in a specific market, the San Francisco Bay Area, U.S.A. Based on transaction cost economics alternative modes of governance in the health care market are examined. For this purpose a long-term case study has been conducted in the Bay Area in order to evaluate <I>how health care transactions should be organized to economize on transaction costs, which experiences have been made over the last years and which strategies are recommendable for future reorganization in the U.S. health care market and other countries. In addition, implications for the German health care market are discussed as well. A conclusion finally summarizes the findings and outlines further areas of research.
