This book was released on 2008-02-26 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mediterranean islands exhibit many similarities in their biotic ecological, physical and environmental characteristics. There are also many differences in terms of their human colonization and current anthropogenic pressures. This book addresses in three sections these characteristics and examines the major environmental changes that the islands experienced during the Quaternary period. The first section provides details on natural and cultural factors which have shaped island landscapes. It describes the environmental and cultural changes of the Holocene and their effects on biota, as well as on the current human pressures that are now threats to the sustainability of the island communities. The second section focuses on the landscapes of the largest islands namely Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Cyprus, Crete, Malta and the Balearics. Each island chapter includes a special topic reflecting a particular characteristic of the island. Part three presents strategies for action towards sustainability in Mediterranean islands and concludes with a comparison between the largest islands. Despite several published books on Mediterranean ecosystems/landscapes there is no existing book dealing with Mediterranean islands in a collective manner. Students, researchers and university lecturers in environmental science, geography, biology and ecology will find this work invaluable as a cross-disciplinary text while planners and politicians will welcome the succinct summaries as background material to planning decisions.

Book Impacts of European Territorial Policies in the Baltic States

Download or read book Impacts of European Territorial Policies in the Baltic States written by Garri Raagmaa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban and regional development in the Baltic States and other Central and Eastern European countries has experienced rapid changes since their re-independence at the beginning of the 1990s. Meanwhile, urban and regional planning institutions and organizational cultures in the Baltic States have only changed rather incrementally, despite various national and European pressures for reform. As a consequence, the effects of European cohesion and structural policy measures have been quite modest, and the ability of the planning systems in the Baltic states to manage contemporary trends in urban and regional development has become increasingly limited. This book focuses on these issues and tensions of spatial planning and development in the Baltic States and their distinctiveness compared to other European countries. It provides an overview of the historical and cultural context of spatial development, a discussion of the processes of Europeanization of spatial planning in the specific context of the Baltic States, and an analysis of whether these processes may be leading to policy convergence in the region. This book was published as a special issue of European Planning Studies.

Book Broadband Islands towards Integration

Download or read book Broadband Islands towards Integration written by Otto Spaniol and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Different topics related to European research policy and funding in the area of broadband communications are explored in this volume. Consideration is given both to the obvious scientific aspects and to the political/strategic dimension accorded by its RACE context. Five major sections form the bulk of the book. The first provides a survey of what is currently happening in the area of very high speed communication. The application issue is reinforced by the next part, where market trends are addressed as well as upcoming applications for very high speed networks. The third chapter is broad ranging and includes an examination of architectures from workstations via QoS and domain management to multimedia documents. The upper layers of the OSI/RM are addressed in the fourth section, with the typical problems arising if multimedia information is to be transmitted and processed forming the core of the discussion. The following chapter considers the lower layers' issues. These 5 major sections are followed by some 12 papers considering a diverse range of topics. A discussion on Exploiting the Changing Telecommunications Market: Where can Europe Succeed? concludes the volume. It attempts to identify both Europe's current position and its future prospects in this rapidly developing market - with a firm recommendation that the three major players, Europe, the USA and Japan will have to join forces.

Book excerpt: Island Landscapes takes a critical look at the evolution of European islandscapes and seascapes to examine the conditions facing them in the twenty first century. Considering island landscapes as an expression of European culture, this book envisages future trends and presents clearly the need to find a balance between preservation and development to ensure sustainability. Both large and small islands are illustrated in the book including the British Isles, Malta and Cyprus as well as archipelagos in Norway, Italy and Greece. Their unique identities and values reveal the remarkable breadth of cultural heritage possessed by these diverse European islands. An interdisciplinary approach is applied to the history, perception, characterisation and planning of islandscape and seascape in Europe, to support culturally-oriented strategies for these fragile landscapes.

Book Island Power Systems

Download or read book Island Power Systems written by Lukas Sigrist and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major concern of island power systems is frequency stability. A power system is said to be frequency stable if its generators are able to supply their loads at a frequency within acceptable limits after a disturbance. Frequency instability occurs if load-generation imbalances are not corrected in appropriate manner and time. Since island power systems are more sensitive to frequency instability than large ones due to the smaller number of generators online and the lower inertia, they require a larger amount of primary reserve per generator. This book provides a worldwide overview of island power systems, describing their main features and issues. Split into two parts, the first part examines the technical operation, and in particular, frequency stability of island power systems and its technical solutions, including more efficient underfrequency load-shedding schemes. The chapters explore both conventional and advanced load-shedding schemes and consider the improvement of these schemes by making them more robust and efficient. Advanced devices are modelled and analyzed to enhance frequency stability and reduce the need for load shedding. In the second part, the economic operation of island power systems is explored in detail. For that purpose, regulations and economic operations (centralized vs. market scheme) are reviewed by the authors. The authors discuss models for renewable energy sources and for advanced devices and systems such as demand-side management, energy storage systems, and electric vehicles. This book will be critical reading to all researchers and professionals in power system planning and engineering, electrical/power delivery, RES and control engineering. It will also be of interest to researchers in signal processing and telecommunications and renewable energy, as well as power system utility providers.

Book Energy Security

Download or read book Energy Security written by Sascha Muller-Kraenner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Essential reading.' Bernice Lee, Chatham House 'Lays out the energy security landscape with a commendable clarity that I have not seen elsewhere. It could help save the world.' Science, People & Politics Accessible and exciting ... [this] is the first truly objective examination of the relationship between resource scarcity, security and ecological destruction. Neues Deutschland Cuts through the confusion and complexity, clarifying the options for a sustainable energy future. Dan Esty, Yale University Humanity stands at a threshold: will its shared energy future be peaceful, or will it be threatened by resource wars? How can rapidly depleting resources be managed to the advantage of all, and therefore conflicts averted? How can we avoid irreparable damage to the last areas of untouched natural beauty, all in the name of accessing valuable resources? And how do we arrive at an international energy policy which not only provides safe, economical energy without conflict, but also addresses the all-important issue of climate change: What is the best way to achieve greater energy security? Energy Security addresses all of these questions, arguing for an urgent overhaul of international law and institutions to control relations with countries such as Russia, which own the worlds remaining fuel supplies. The book presents alternatives to fossil fuels as two diametrically opposing strategies: the increased use of atomic energy; and a comprehensive climate protection policy with a focus on energy efficiency and renewable energy. In times of international terrorism, there are heightened concerns about nuclear proliferation, and Energy Security argues that the future must belong to renewable energy. Book The Pan European Ecological Network taking Stock

Download or read book The Pan European Ecological Network taking Stock written by Marie Bonnin and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pace of biodiversity decline is quickening worldwide. Habitat break-up, pollution, over-use of natural areas and the creation of artificial landscapes increase the rate of erosion, while reducing species' opportunity for migration, dispersion and exchange. In 1995, when the European Ministers of the Environment met in Sofia, they launched the Pan-European Biological and Landscape Diversity Strategy, so as to strengthen environment and biodiversity conservation policies. The setting up of the Pan-European Ecological Network covering Eurasia was one of the key steps taken under the Strategy. Work has continued on this project, and it is now based on the numerous national, regional and transregional ecological networks being set up throughout Europe. In Kiev, in 2003, the Ministers and heads of delegation noted these positive developments, expressed firm support for the creation of the Pan-European Ecological Network and asked for its constituent parts to be identified and mapped on a pan-European scale. This book looks at the implementation of this Network in the 55 states concerned. It has been written by a team comprising, under the aegis of the Council of Europe, numerous government experts and specialists dealing with the issue of ecological networks. It is intended to reassure Ministers, policy-makers and scientists that they made the right decision in supporting the creation of the Pan-European Ecological Network with a view to (re-)creating a true green infrastructure for Europe.

Book No country is an energy island

Download or read book No country is an energy island written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Lords: European Union Committee and published by Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is alarm at the degree of uncertainty and complacency about affordable, secure and low carbon energy supplies has grown. It is clear that investment is urgently required, notably in a low carbon, interconnected and innovative energy system, that makes us less reliant on imports of highly volatile and dirty fossil fuels. The value of energy companies has slumped since 2008, the public purse is severely constrained, but more than enough money is around in the investment community and clear policy is needed in order to release it. No country is an energy island, so EU policy is particularly important. We need leadership and direction from the EU and its Member States in developing and agreeing an energy policy framework through to 2030. At the heart of that framework, we see two core policies. First, a revised EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). The ETS needs to include a minimum price for carbon, providing governments and investors with the confidence to support innovation through investment. Second, and contrary to UK Government policy, a target for the proportion of energy to be delivered through renewable energy until 2030 is required. Unless we find a way of doing this, our future energy could well be highly polluting, unaffordable and insecure. Other recommendations from the Committee include: a greenhouse gas reduction target of 40% compared to 1990 levels, in line with an 80% reduction by 2050; development of electricity interconnections between Member States; that the UK Government also examine the potential for a regulatory framework to increase gas storage.

Book The Global Community Yearbook of International Law and Jurisprudence 2020

Download or read book The Global Community Yearbook of International Law and Jurisprudence 2020 written by Giuliana Ziccardi Capaldo and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-17 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2020 edition marks the 20th Anniversary of The Global Community Yearbook of International Law and Jurisprudence. The Yearbook has established itself as an authoritative source of reference on global legal issues and international jurisprudence. It includes analysis of the most significant global trends in a way that allows readers to monitor the development of the global legal order from several perspectives. The Yearbook publishes annually in a volume of carefully chosen primary source material and corresponding expert commentary. The General Editor, Professor Giuliana Ziccardi Capaldo, employs her vast expertise in international law to select excerpts from important court opinions and to choose experts from around the world to contribute essay-guides, which illuminate those cases. Although the main focus is recent case law from the major international tribunals and regional courts, the first four parts of each year's edition features expert articles by renowned scholars who address broader themes in current and future developments in international law and global policy, themes that appear throughout the case law of the many courts covered by the series as a whole. The Global Community Yearbook has thus become not just an indispensable window to recent jurisprudence: the series now also serves to prepare researchers for the issues facing emerging global law. This anniversary edition updates readers on the important work of long-standing international tribunals and introduces readers to more novel topics in international law. The journal's founding editor, Professor Emeritus Giuliana Ziccardi Capaldo, in her Editorial gives a presentation of the Yearbook's intellectual trajectory, as developed from its original roots, showing intriguing prospects for a publication that aims at the very forefront of events in law, politics, ethics, and jurisprudence in a global community. The Yearbook continues to provide expert coverage of the Court of Justice of the European Union and diverse tribunals from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), human rights courts (ECtHR, IACtHR, ACtHPR), criminal tribunals such as the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (MICT), to economically based tribunals such as ICSID and the WTO dispute settlement system. This edition contains original research articles on the development and analysis of the concept of global law and the views of the leading global law theorists on the subject of globalization. This 20th anniversary edition also includes a special section which provides an interdisciplinary overview of China's Belt and Road Initiative; and an examination of the global public health order in a post-COVID-19 world. The Yearbook provides students, scholars, and practitioners alike a valuable combination of expert discussion and direct quotes from the court opinions to which that discussion relates, as well as an annual overview of the process of cross-fertilization between international courts and tribunals.
