Book Works Trams of the British Isles

Download or read book Works Trams of the British Isles written by Peter Waller and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A photographic overview of the little-known cars and engineers that kept British tramways running smoothly and safely. While generally unfamiliar to the passengers that used tramways, works trams were an essential facet of the efficient operation of any system—large or small—and this book presents an overview of the great variety of works trams that served the first generation of tramways in the British Isles. Although construction of most tramways was left to the contractor employed on the work, once this was completed the responsibility for the maintenance and safe operation of the system fell on the operator. The larger the operator, the greater and more varied the fleet of works cars employed; specialist vehicles were constructed for specific duties. Smaller operators, however, did not have this luxury, relying instead on one or two dedicated works cars or, more often, a passenger car temporarily assigned to that work. This book is a pictorial survey of the many weird and wonderful works cars that once graced Britain’s first generation tramways.

Book Regional Tramways the North West of England Post 1945

Download or read book Regional Tramways the North West of England Post 1945 written by Peter Waller and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2017-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third in the 'Regional Tramways' series that covers the history of tramway operation in the British Isles. Focusing on North-West England, the book provides an overview of the history of tramways in the region from the 1860s, when one of the pioneering horse trams that predated the Tramways Act of 1870 operated in Birkenhead (the first tramway to operate in the British Isles), through to the closures of the last traditional tramways (Stockport and Liverpool) in 1951 and 1957. It also looks at one great survivor the tramway in Blackpool that, fully modernized, continues to operate in the twenty-first century. Concentrating on the systems that survived into 1945 Blackburn, Blackpool, Bolton, Bury, Darwen, Liverpool, Manchester, Oldham, Salford, SHMD and Stockport the book provides a comprehensive narrative, detailing the history of these operations from 1945 onwards, with full fleet lists, maps and details of route openings and closures. The story is supported by almost 200 illustrations, both colour and black and white, many of which have never been published before, that portray the trams that operated in these towns and cities, and the routes on which they operated. Bringing the story up to date, the book also examines the one second-generation tramway built in the region Manchester Metrolink as well as informing readers where it is still possible to see surviving first-generation trams from the region in preservation.

Book A Transport Journey in Colour

Download or read book A Transport Journey in Colour written by Martin Jenkins and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel through the mid-twentieth century British Isles in this stunning collection of street photography featuring historic vehicles and buildings. This remarkable book takes the reader on a nostalgic transport journey into streets throughout the British Isles some of which have hardly changed, except for the vehicles displayed, whilst others have been transformed or have, in some cases, altered virtually beyond all recognition. Hours of fascinating research using Google Street View has enabled the authors to indicate how their selected street scenes have changed and also how readers can explore these changes for themselves by accessing Google Street View. The authors have managed to bring together some truly outstanding and often stunning images from a period when color coverage of transport subjects was in its infancy. As a result, the book includes many previously unpublished views taken between 1950 and 1975 the majority from collections held by Online Transport Archive, of which charity both authors are trustees. The richly varied street scenes depict not only buses, trams and trolleybuses but also people as well as railway locomotives, cars, lorries, vans, cinemas, churches, retail outlets and public houses. An absolute feast for the eye. Rich in variety and with a wealth of detailed captions. “This is a highly readable and accessible book which will immerse the reader in scenes of a halcyon yesteryear. As the reader turns the pages, it would be understandable to feel mournful about the loss of manufacturers; coachwork builders, and the industrial scenes enclosed within. However, there is also cause to be thankful for the vision of the photographers to capture the everyday scenes which whilst no longer with us, have been captured and preserved for the benefit of posterity.” —Donna’s Book Blog “A highly recommended read for all. Five stars.” —UK Historian
