Book Trams and Trolleybuses

Download or read book Trams and Trolleybuses written by Oliver Green and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the horse-drawn trams of the nineteenth century to the larger electric models of the early twentieth, this reliable form of public transport revolutionised town travel by making it affordable enough for working people to use. From the 1930s, the rise of the trolleybus, which also picked up power from overhead cables but ran without expensive tracks, looked set to supersede the tram – but ultimately, by the 1950s, both fell victim to motor buses and private cars. However, since the 1980s the environmental benefits of light rail have encouraged a growing comeback for trams on our crowded and polluted city streets. Using beautiful contemporary photographs, this is the fascinating story of the rise, fall and revival of this everyday, yet sometimes controversial, mode of urban transport.

Book British Trolleybus Systems Yorkshire

Download or read book British Trolleybus Systems Yorkshire written by Peter Waller and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there had been experiments with the use of a new form of transport - the 'trackless tram' (better known as the trolleybus) - during the first decade of the 20th century, it was in June 1911 that Bradford and Leeds became the country's pioneering operators of trolleybuses. Whilst, in Leeds, the trolleybus was destined to have a fairly peripheral role (and finally disappeared in 1928), in Bradford, perhaps as a consequence of the hills surrounding the city centre which represented ideal territory for the trolleybus, the 'trackless' was destined to have a long and illustrious career stretching for more than 60 years until - on 26 March 1972 - the final first-generation trolleybus system finally succumbed to the all-conquering motorbus. This is the first of two volumes to cover the history of all of the trolleybus operators of the British Isles and focuses on those systems in the North of England and Scotland as well as the only network in Northern Ireland - Belfast. The book includes comprehensive fleet and route histories allied to some 250 illustrations, both color and mono, including a map of each network featured.

Book The Forgotten Canals of Yorkshire

Download or read book The Forgotten Canals of Yorkshire written by Roger Glister and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2004-07-31 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Forgotten Canals of Yorkshire: Wakefield to Swinton via Barnsley' is part of the canal series in 'Transport Through the Ages', brought to you by Wharncliffe Books. This fascinating book traces the nostalgic journey of the canal boats through the ages. As an illustrative history, 'The Forgotten Canals of Yorkshire: Wakefield to Swinton via Barnsley', is based on a unique collection of photographs collected by the late Alan Hall. They illuminate the Barnsley Canal and the Dearne and Dove Canal not only in their working years but also in their decline and eventual abandonment. Most of the photographs have not been published before and demonstrate very poignantly the official vandalism that befell the canals fifty years ago. Our industrial heritage was wilfully destroyed and important archaeological features were obliterated in the name of progres. Take yourself on a nostalgic journey through the pictorial re-creation of the waterways of Yorkshire, as you read 'The Forgotten Canals of Yorkshire: Wakefield to Swinton via Barnsley'.

Book The Golden Age of Buses Trams

Download or read book The Golden Age of Buses Trams written by Henry Hirst and published by Character-19. This book was released on 2020-10-22 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public transport has now been around for over 150 years in one shape or another and this book takes a nostalgic look at the heritage and story of Buses and Trams. Tramways when operated in the 19th century and beyond formed a large part of the community in towns and cities, helping to get people around in style using steam and electric technology. Trams over time were however up against the might of the internal combustion engine, in the shape of the emerging petrol and diesel powered buses. These newfangled vehicles didn’t require rails or overhead cables and could go just about anywhere. There was also of course the electric trolleybus that sat somewhere between a bus and tram. The tram has thankfully made comebacks over the years and buses have evolved with the times, so join us looking through the early years to more recent times. This book is full of facts, information about the manufacturers, insight about the classic buses and includes some superb archive pictures.
