Book Trajectory Analysis of a Radial Homing Gliding Parachute in a Uniform Wind

Download or read book Trajectory Analysis of a Radial Homing Gliding Parachute in a Uniform Wind written by Arthur L. Murphy (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two dimensional trajectory of a radial homing gliding parachute in a uniform wind is presented. The kinematics of the motion is discussed generating two first order differential equations which are separated and solved by direct integration. The resulting expression functionally relates the radial position of the parachute to the instantaneous value of the azimuth angle. Utilizing this result, an exact solution for time in terms of space coordinates in then obtained. From geometric considerations the angular motion along the azimuth direction is found to be stable when the system is flying into the wind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The planar trajectory of a [sic] Azimuth Homing gliding parachute maneuvering in a uniform wind field is presented. The kinematics of the motion is discussed generating two first order differential equations which are separated producing an expression involving only position coordinates. A change of variables is introduced and exact solutions obtained by direct integration. The resulting trajectories fall into two categories to their Target Seeking or Orbital characteristics. Flight paths in the Target Seeking domain are shown to be convergent when the system has a wind penetration capability. The corresponding velocity state at target fly-over is a minimum. The family of Target Orbiting solutions are shown to produce trajectories hich are captured about the target in Elliptic Spirals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional parachute systems must be launched at the lowest possible altitude in order to insure acceptable accuracy. Due to the need for such critical release point positioning, delivery aircraft are required to maneuver in a restrictive and generally unfavorable air space. This is particularly true for the majority of resupply missions necessitating an airdrop. It is, therefore, of interest to consider advanced airdrop techniques, with the objective of relaxing launch constraints while maintaining or improving drop zone accuracy. This paper is concerned primarily with the trajectory or flight path aspects of gliding parachute development. The presentation is analytic in scope, producing from geometric constraints imposed by the guidance scheme, a class of closed form solutions specifying trajectories and launch criteria.

Book Wind Effect on Gliding Parachute Systems with Non proportional Automatic Homing Control

Download or read book Wind Effect on Gliding Parachute Systems with Non proportional Automatic Homing Control written by Thomas F. Goodrick and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equations are presented and evaluated for estimating the wind effect on the approach path and descending orbit of gliding parachute systems with non-proportional automatic homing control. Exact equations are presented for determining certain characteristic features of the descending orbit. Iteration equations are presented incorporating homing simulation for calculating points at equal time intervals along the ground track. The control response time, effect of deployment position, and impact position probability are discussed. An empirical equation for the radius of the circle of equal probability as a function of turning radius, wind velocity, and system velocity is presented. A parametric analysis of the equations is given for systems with glide ratios from 2.0 to 3.0 and turning radii of 75 ft and 100 ft in winds of from 4 to 32 fps. The analysis shows that accuracy is more dependent on high glide ratio than on turning radius. (Author).

Book Determination of Trajectories for a Gliding Parachute System

Download or read book Determination of Trajectories for a Gliding Parachute System written by Robert Mark Koopersmith and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of the automatic guidance of a parachute subject to a constant wind is considered. A trajectory is to be determined, through variations of the bank angle, to land on an intended target and to approach the target in the up-wind direction. Optimal control, involving a minimum expenditure of control energy, requires the solution of a nonlinear two-point boundary value problem. However, the structure of the optimal control law is derived in terms of three unknown parameters. Nonlinear algebraic equations for these parameters involving elliptic integrals can be written, but their solution is tedious. A method for computing the parameters is developed through the numerical minimization of a terminal error function. This method requires the integration of a system of twelve differential equations at each iteration. A non-optimal guidance scheme is also given, which prescribes a given geometrical path parameterized by three constants as a trajectory.

Book Control of a Gliding Parachute System in a Non Uniform Wind

Download or read book Control of a Gliding Parachute System in a Non Uniform Wind written by Allan E. Pearson and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report investigates a method for post deployment guiding of a cargo-carrying gliding parachute to a target. Least squares estimation and an open-loop control law based on geometric considerations are combined to define a closed-loop control law for the system under variable wind conditions. Simulation studies of the overall system are included for a variety of initial conditions and wind profiles. These simulations indicate that the proposed algorithm, with additional experimentation, may be a feasible solution to the problem. (Author).
