Download or read book Trajan s Column and the Dacian Wars written by Lino Rossi and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Domitian's Dacian War, two punitive expeditions mounted as a border defense against raids of Moesia from Dacia in 86?87 AD ordered by the Emperor Titus Flavius Domitianus against Dacia and the Dacian king Decebalus Trajan's Dacian Wars, two campaigns of conquest ordered or led by the Emperor Trajan in 101?102 AD and 105?106 AD from Moesia against Dacia and Decebalus ... Trajan's Column (Italian: Colonna Traiana) is a Roman triumphal column in Rome, Italy, that commemorates Roman emperor Trajan's victory in the Dacian Wars. It was probably constructed under the supervision of the architect Apollodorus of Damascus at the order of the Roman Senate. It is located in Trajan's Forum, built near the Quirinal Hill, north of the Roman Forum. Completed in AD 113, the freestanding column is most famous for its spiral bas relief, which artistically describes the epic wars between the Romans and Dacians (101?102 and 105?106). Its design has inspired numerous victory columns, both ancient and modern."--Wikipedia.

Book excerpt: Trajan's column is surely the most famous Roman monument in the world, appreciated for very different reasons by historians, archaeologists, art historians and the general public. In recent years much concern has been expressed about the effects on the column of modern pollution, but more than a century ago casts were made of the entire column for Napoleon III, and , at the beginning of the century, photographs of these casts were published by Conrad Cichorius. They form an essential record for the students of today, but are now very difficult to come by. First published in 1988 and here extensively revised, this book re-publishes Cichorius's Plates (the complete series) and supplies in addition a new and detailed introduction, a full Commentary on all the reliefs, and some twenty-six specialised notes dealing with the design of the column, the chronological, archaeological and topographical problems affecting its interpretation and our understanding of those wars. This is the most comprehensive and best illustrated book on the Column yet written.

Book The Column of Marcus Aurelius

Download or read book The Column of Marcus Aurelius written by Martin Beckmann and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important monuments of Imperial Rome and at the same time one of the most poorly understood, the Column of Marcus Aurelius has long stood in the shadow of the Column of Trajan. In The Column of Marcus Aurelius, Martin Beckmann makes a thorough study of the form, content, and meaning of this infrequently studied monument. Beckmann employs a new approach to the column, one that focuses on the process of its creation and construction, to uncover the cultural significance of the column to the Romans of the late second century A.D. Using clues from ancient sources and from the monument itself, this book traces the creative process step by step from the first decision to build the monument through the processes of planning and construction to the final carving of the column's relief decoration. The conclusions challenge many of the widely held assumptions about the value of the column's 700-foot-long frieze as a historical source. By reconstructing the creative process of the column's sculpture, Beckmann opens up numerous new paths of analysis not only to the Column of Marcus Aurelius but also to Roman imperial art and architecture in general.

Book excerpt: Until the publication of this captivating biography, no such volume on Trajan’s life has been tailored to the general reader. The unique book illuminates a neglected period of ancient Roman history, featuring a comprehensive array of maps, illustrations, and photographs to help orientate and bring the text to life. Trajan rose from fairly obscure beginnings to become the emperor of Rome. He was born in Italica, an Italic settlement close to modern Seville in present-day Spain, and is the first Roman Emperor to be born outside of Rome. His remarkable rise from officer to general and then to emperor in just over 20 years reveals a shrewd politician who maintained absolute power. Trajan’s success in taking the Roman Empire to its greatest expanse is highlighted in this gripping biography. Trajan’s military campaigns allowed the Roman Empire to attain its greatest military, political and cultural achievements. The book draws on novel theories, recent evidence and meticulous research, including field visits to Italy, Spain, Germany and Romania to ensure accurate, vivid writing that transports the reader to Trajan’s territory.
