Download or read book Cybernetics and the Origin of Information written by Raymond Ruyer and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-12-19 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the lost classics of French philosophy, Cybernetics and the Origin of Information has never before been published in English. Raymond Ruyer—who was a major influence on Simondon and Deleuze, among others—originally wrote this book, one of the first critiques of Norbert Wiener’s cybernetics program, in 1954. At once critical and analytical, it is a deep exploration of information theory, cybernetics, and the philosophical assumptions and implications of both. Among the themes covered in the book are the main types of information machines, information’s relationship to behavior and communication, and the nature of entropy and time in cybernetics. This translation contributes to understanding the rich history of cybernetics and the philosophy of information. A true hidden gem in the history of philosophical thought, this text will help readers understand foundational criticisms of ideas that have led to artificial intelligence.

Download or read book Besoins informationnels et extraction d information Vers une conscience artificielle written by TURENNE Nicolas and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Bilingualism Multiculturalism and Second Language Learning written by Allan G. Reynolds and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection pays tribute to Professor Wallace E. Lambert and his contributions to the fields of language and linguistics. Each chapter, written by an internationally renowned theorist or researcher, traces the currents of theory and research within the topic area to the present day, provides a state-of-the-art review of the topic, and offers an outline for future research directions. The book concludes with an overview from Professor Lambert that critically examines the impact of the ideas in each individual chapter. This volume is organized around the three areas where Professor Lambert's unique contributions are most substantial and most evident: bilingualism, multiculturalism, and second language learning. Specifically, the papers presented discuss the topics of social, psychological, cognitive, and neuropsychological aspects of bilingualism and second language learning, the psychology of inter-group relations and multiculturalism, bilingual/immersion education, and language planning. Note: Royalties earned from sales of this book will go to the Wallace E. Lambert Student Research Fund at McGill University for use by students interested in second language acquisition, bilingualism, and/or multiculturalism.

Download or read book Automating Linguistics written by Jacqueline Léon and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automating Linguistics offers an in-depth study of the history of the mathematisation and automation of the sciences of language. In the wake of the first mathematisation of the 1930s, two waves followed: machine translation in the 1950s and the development of computational linguistics and natural language processing in the 1960s. These waves were pivotal given the work of large computerised corpora in the 1990s and the unprecedented technological development of computers and software.Early machine translation was devised as a war technology originating in the sciences of war, amidst the amalgamate of mathematics, physics, logics, neurosciences, acoustics, and emerging sciences such as cybernetics and information theory. Machine translation was intended to provide mass translations for strategic purposes during the Cold War. Linguistics, in turn, did not belong to the sciences of war, and played a minor role in the pioneering projects of machine translation.Comparing the two trends, the present book reveals how the sciences of language gradually integrated the technologies of computing and software, resulting in the second-wave mathematisation of the study of language, which may be called mathematisation-automation. The integration took on various shapes contingent upon cultural and linguistic traditions (USA, ex-USSR, Great Britain and France). By contrast, working with large corpora in the 1990s, though enabled by unprecedented development of computing and software, was primarily a continuation of traditional approaches in the sciences of language sciences, such as the study of spoken and written texts, lexicography, and statistical studies of vocabulary.

Download or read book Thesaurus of Information Sciences and Technologies written by Denis Beauchemin and published by Laval : Canadian Workplace Automation Research Centre. This book was released on 1992 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1987, the Integrated Service of Information Resources (ISIR) of the Canadian Workplace Automation Research Centre began to set up a bibliographic data base to manage and make usable its documentation collection. To successfully process the information relevant to the various subject fields, the ISIR had to develop a controlled documentation language that eventually became this thesaurus. Terms are arranged alphabetically in English and French with equivalents in the other language and relationships to other terms in the thesaurus. A hierarchical list is also included. Subject fields include computer science, telecommunications, optics, acoustics and graphics and their specific information-processing applications (production, conversion, storage, distribution and access).
