Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traite Pratique Et Raisonne de l'Emploi des Plantes Medicinales Indigenes Apres vingt annees de pratique a Calais, j'ai du, pour des raisons particulieres, me fixer a la campagne, ou j'ai exerce la medecine depuis 1832 jusqu'en 1846. Il m'a suffi de jeter un coup-d' il sur l'etat compare des villes et des campagnes pour me convaincre, au point de vue medical, de l'enorme difference qui existe entre les ressources des unes et celles des autres. Dans les villes, l'etal social forme un corps dont toutes les parties distinctes, mais intimement liees, agissent et reagissent les unes sur les autres. L'aspect de la misere agglomeree y excite la pitie, et sollicite des secours qu'il est presque toujours facile de se procurer. Les villes ont des hospices, des bureaux de bienfaisance, des caisses de secours mutuels pour les ouvriers, des associations pieuses, des dispensaires, etc. Les campagnes sont privees de tous ces avantages et restent abandonnees a elles-memes, comme si, formant un peuple a part, elles n'etaient pas regies par les memes lois et ne devaient pas pretendre aux memes bienfaits. Dans les communes rurales, plus qu'ailleurs, s'offre le contraste du bien-etre des riches et de l'infortune des nombreux habitants qui n'ont d'autres biens que l'emploi de leurs forces. Si l'ouvrier des campagnes est moins a plaindre que celui des villes tant qu'il se porte bien, il est beaucoup plus pauvre, plus ecrase par le malheur quand la maladie l'atteint. Le plus souvent, alors, il souffre sans secours, lutte peniblement, languit ignore et meurt silencieux et resigne dans une chaumiere ou le froid, l'humidite, la malproprete se joignent aux autres causes de destruction. Le cure et le medecin assistent presque toujours seuls a ce dechirant spectacle de la misere aux prises avec la maladie. Si l'un, representant la pensee religieuse comme une immortelle esperance entre la terre et le Ciel, est la premiere providence du village, l'autre, prodiguant avec desinteressement les secours et les consolations de son art, en est assurement la seconde. Là, il côtoie chaque jour " le déchirant spectacle de la misère aux prises avec la maladie ". Il décide alors de " renoncer aux médicaments et aux préparations pharmaceutiques dont le luxe ne peut être payé que par le riche ". Il met en œuvre les plantes indigènes sur la base d'une vaste érudition, non sans prêter attention aux savoirs de la tradition locale. Après quatorze années de pratique rurale, la retraite lui permet de rédiger un bilan que la richesse et l'acuité des observations, l'abondance des " notes pathologiques et thérapeutiques ", le rappel critique des indications anciennes, permettent de qualifier de médecine expérimentale par les plantes. En regard des textes antérieurs dans le même domaine, le TRAITE PRATIQUE ET RAISONNE apparaît comme le premier ouvrage moderne de phytothérapie en Français. Largement exploitée jusqu'à nos jours par les livres de vulgarisation - souvent sans mention de source-, la somme de Cazin lègue toujours ses observations, et beaucoup de prescriptions aux grands traités de phytothérapie, en France comme à l'étranger. La nouvelle médecine par les plantes, devenue d'un bord spécialité impénétrable au profane, de l'autre commerce analogue à celui du médicament classique, requiert une simplification sans simplisme. La thérapeutique végétale est une alternative de valeur à bien des excès médicamenteux. La réédition du TRAITE de Cazin doit aider à repenser le recours aux plantes dans un souci de partage avec le plus grand nombre, tout en ramenant bien des prescriptions à leur précision première. Elle concerne aussi bien le chercheur soucieux de retourner aux sources les plus fiables que l'utilisateur attentif du remède végétal.
