Book excerpt: Originally published in 1959. This book examines the French Enlightenment by analyzing critical thought in eighteenth-centruy France. It examines the philosophes' views on evil, free will and determinism, and human nature. This is an interesting group to look at, according to Crocker, because French Enlightenment thinkers straddled two vastly different time periods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Natural Law and Civil Sovereignty new research by leading international scholars is brought to bear on a single crucial issue: the role of early modern natural law doctrines in reconstructing the relations between moral right and civil authority in the face of profound religious and political conflict. In addition to providing fresh insights into the hard-fought struggle to legitimate a desacralised civil order, the book also shows the degree to which the legitimacy of the modern secular state remains dependent on this decisive set of developments.

Book excerpt: Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire compresses thirteen turbulent centuries into an epic narrative shot through with insight, irony and incisive character analysis. Sceptical about Christianity, sympathetic to the barbarian invaders and the Byzantine Empire, constantly aware of how political leaders often achieve the exact opposite of what they intend, Gibbon was both alert to the broad pattern of events and significant revealing details. Download or read book Ecce homo written by Paul T. d' Holbach and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecce homo!, evidently the first published "Life of Jesus", appeared anonymously in 1770. The text, by the atheist Baron d'Holbach, presents events contained in the gospels from a rationalist, free-thinking point of view. In order to "demystify" the scriptures, d'Holbach depicts Jesus as a normal human being, who had a normal birth, whose miracles were staged, in short who was an unrealistic visionary. This represented a vehement attack on the Bible, Christian dogma and morality, and all aspects of Christian institutions.

Download or read book Ludvig Holberg 1684 1754 written by Knud Haakonssen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ludvig Holberg (1684–1754) was the foremost representative of the Danish-Norwegian Enlightenment and also a European figure of note. He published significant works in natural law and history, but also a very important body of moral essays and epistles. He authored several engaging autobiographies and European travelogues, a major utopian novel that was an immediate European succes, interesting satires that advocated women’s education and career, and a large number of comedies. These comedies secured Holberg’s status as the most significant playwright in Scandinavia before Ibsen and Strindberg. Through his extensive oeuvre, but especially through his plays, Holberg had a decisive influence on the formation of modern Danish as a literary language, something that was a self-conscious effort on the part of a man who saw himself as an educator of the public. Despite his contemporary impact at home and abroad and his ongoing popularity in Scandinavia, he remains little known in the wider world of enlightenment studies. It is the aim of this volume to revive Holberg as a major figure from a minor corner of the Enlightenment world by presenting the full variety of his work and giving it a European context.
