Book The Development and Evaluation of Advanced Rifle Marksmanship Training Programs with the M16 Rifle

Download or read book The Development and Evaluation of Advanced Rifle Marksmanship Training Programs with the M16 Rifle written by Jon P. Hunt and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1987 a research effort that examined current Advanced Rifle Marksmanship (ARM) training conducted during One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Benning, georgia, was initiated. This research evaluated night fire with no illumination, normally scheduled night fire training with artificial illumination, and protective mask fire during daylight. Alternative methods of training were tested in addition to night fire training using the AN/PVS-4 night vision sight. Separate alternative training methods were tested for protective mask fire during daylight. All training procedures developed during this effort used existing range facilities and training resources. Additional resource demands were confined to increases in training time allocation and extra ammunition. Findings indicated that soldiers had extreme difficulty in hitting targets during night fire with no illumination and with artificial illumination. Results for night fire using the AN/PVS-4 night vision sight showed that soldiers were capable of hitting targets out to 300 m. Findings for protective mask fire during daylight also indicated that soldiers were capable of hitting targets out to 300 m.

Book Basic Rifle Marksmanship Training with the Laser Marksmanship Training System

Download or read book Basic Rifle Marksmanship Training with the Laser Marksmanship Training System written by Joseph D. Hagman and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This research compared the relative impact of two approaches for training Basic Rifle Marksmanship (BRM). One hundred and eighty four One-Station Unit Training (OSUT) infantry trainees (i.e., the experimental group) trained under a U.S. Army Reserve (USAR)-developed, device-based (i.e., the Beamhit Laser Marksmanship Training System LMTS) approach, and 202 infantry trainees (i.e., the control group) trained under the standard U.S. Army Infantry School BRM program of instruction. Results revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control group on shot grouping, weapon zeroing, and known-distance firing. No between-group differences were found, however, for record fire qualification scores or for performance during pop-up target engagement practice periods leading up to qualification. The implications of these findings for initial marksmanship training are discussed along with plans for follow-up USAR-sponsored research to assess (a) the impact of LMTS-based training on sustainment performance, and (b) the feasibility of using LMTS-based performance to predict live-fire qualification scores."--Stinet.

Book excerpt: Drill sergeants are the primary trainers of rifle marksmanship in Initial Entry Training (IET). They are responsible for teaching basic and advanced rifle marksmanship (BRM and ARM) to all enlisted Soldiers using a crawl-walk-run training strategy. The current BRM training strategy encompasses instruction on the fundamentals of marksmanship, grouping and zeroing an M16-/M4-series rifle, and transitional firing that culminates with a qualification event. The ARM training strategy focuses on engaging targets from advanced firing positions in increasingly difficult scenarios and conditions. From 2006 to 2010 the Initial Entry Training (IET) rifle marksmanship program went through numerous changes designed to better prepare the IET Soldier for deployment to Afghanistan or Iraq. These changes redefined parts of the Army's marksmanship doctrine and required drill sergeants to relearn techniques and procedures required to implement the new training strategies. It was determined there was a need to generate a rifle marksmanship diagnostic and training guide that consolidated the tacit knowledge regarding the techniques that experienced drill sergeants and other expert marksmanship trainers had found to be effective with IET Soldiers. These techniques would provide valuable training supplements to the marksmanship field manual.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An effective marksmanship program can be measured by the unit's ability to put effective fire on a target. The strategy begins with the progressive individual training periods taught during initial entry training (IET) and culminates with advanced rifle marksmanship (ARM) skills. Refresher training is conducted only when necessary. A Soldier's marksmanship proficiency depends on proper training and application of the basic marksmanship fundamentals. During initial marksmanship training, emphasis is placed on learning the firing fundamentals, which are taught in four phases-preliminary marksmanship instruction (PMI), downrange feedback, field firing, and advanced firing exercises. This prepares Soldiers for advanced optic and laser training for combat-type collective exercises and real-world deployments.
