Book Ethical and Social Issues in the Information Age

Download or read book Ethical and Social Issues in the Information Age written by Joseph M. Kizza and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-02 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides an introduction to the social and policy issues which have arisen as a result of information technology. Whilst it assumes a modest familiarity with computers, its aim is to provide a guide to the issues suitable for undergraduates. In doing so, the author prompts the students to consider questions such as: "What are the moral codes of cyberspace?" Throughout, the book shows how in many ways the technological development is outpacing the ability of our legal systems to keep up, and how different paradigms applied to ethical questions may often offer conflicting conclusions. As a result students will find this to be a thought-provoking and valuable survey.

Book Family Crisis Intervention

Download or read book Family Crisis Intervention written by Morton Bard and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph explains the concept that underlies police family-crisis intervention training and discusses some guidelines and problems in organizing such a program. In order to explain the importance of the term "family crisis intervention" as originally defined, the author discusses two areas of human behavior that relate to this police function: interpersonal conflict management and crisis intervention theory and practice. The second major section of the monograph focuses on organizational and operational considerations in introducing family-crisis intervention training in a police agency. Given that organizational change inevitably stimulates ambivalence in the personnel affected by the change, police managers must respect and address this ambivalence if the change is to be achieved effectively. The change must also have clearly defined incentives and rewards. Means must be found to reward the high degree of competence required in police family crisis intervention. Three models for police family crisis intervention are profiled, followed by descriptions of three training models: intensive training, field training, and combined intensive and field training, which holds the greatest promise if properly conceived and implemented. In discussing police agency relationships with other agencies, the monograph advises that an effective strategy of family crisis intervention requires the establishment of working relationships between the police and other agencies of the helping system.

Book The Global Industrial Complex

Download or read book The Global Industrial Complex written by Steven Best and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2011 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Global Industrial Complex: Systems of Domination is a groundbreaking collection of essays by a diverse set of leading scholars who examine the entangled and evolving global array of corporate-state structures of hegemonic power--what the editors refer to as "the power complex"--that was first analyzed by C. Wright Mills in his 1956 classic work, The Power Elite. In this new volume edited by Steven Best, Richard Kahn, Anthony J. Nocella II, and Peter McLaren, the power complex is conceived as co-constituted, interdependent and imbricated systems of domination. Spreading insidiously on a global level, the transnational institutional relationships of the power complex combine the logics of capitalist exploitation and profits and industrialist norms of efficiency, control, and mass production, While some have begun to analyze these institutional complexes as separate entities, this book is unique in analyzing them as overlapping, mutually-enforcing systems that operate globally and which will undoubtedly frame the macro-narrative of the 21st century (and perhaps beyond). The global industrial complex--a grand power complex of complexes--thus poses one of the most formidable challenges to the sustainability of planetary democracy, freedom and peace today. But there can be no serious talk of opposition to it until it is more popularly named and understood. The Global Industrial Complex aims to be a foundational contribution to this emerging educational and political project.
