Book Understanding Technological Innovation

Download or read book Understanding Technological Innovation written by Patrice Flichy and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers and students in the management of innovation will find in this book an analytical framework that articulates technological innovation processes and the creation of new markets. The multiplication of examples and cases helps the reader in better grasping the different aspects of the proposed framework. The focus on information and communication technologies is of high relevance: it enables the reader to put present developments in perspective, and this is especially relevant when discussing ascending innovation and the role of users and uses. Philippe Laredo, Universities of Paris-Est and Manchester, Coordinator of the European PRIME Network of Excellence Patrice Flichy takes the reader on a fascinating tour of the literature on technological innovation. Innovation is situated within the frames of functioning and use, offering rich insights into the strategies, tactics, improvisations and learning which occur through time. He emphasises the dreams and musings of inventors, novelists and the popular media to show how they mediate new technological frames of reference. This book offers an excellent synthesis of the literature and an original historical account of innovation with special reference to information and communication technologies. Robin Mansell, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK In Understanding Technological Innovation, Patrice Flichy s interest is in the genesis of technology. He describes the perspectives and interpretive schemes deployed by historians, sociologists and economists in attempts to understand the determinants, including chance, of the particular forms of products and systems that have come to dominate the market and play so important a role some would claim dominant in our lives. It is rare to find in one volume so informed a critique of the essential writings of historians of technology, contemporary sociologists and economic historians. His own special interest lies in the development of information technology and he puts his expertise to good use in revealing and contrasting the different perspectives and claims of these three schools. Louis L. Bucciarelli, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US Working at the interface between interactionist sociology, history and economics, Flichy provides us with a language for charting the evolution of new technologies, as generic technical capabilities are explored, perhaps inspired by visions of societal change, and become stabilised and attached to particular conceptions of use. He offers us an integrated perspective on technological innovation, addressing the influence of history and social context whilst remaining open to the often unanticipated dynamism and surprises that may surround both these trajectories. This book will provide a thoughtful contribution to current debates. The critical literature review will provide a rich and convenient source for advanced teaching and research training. Robin Williams, The University of Edinburgh, UK How do the social sciences address the question of innovation and the relationship between technology and use? This is the core point of this book which examines critically diverse works, in sociology, history, economics and anthropology, in order to formulate a new approach. This reflection is essentially of a general nature, though the cases used to illustrate the analysis are drawn primarily from the field of ICT. Patrice Flichy studies how the socio-technological actions of the different actors, particularly designers and users, are organized within the same frames of reference. He also introduces a new element into the model by demonstrating how time is involved in technological choices. Understanding Technological Innovation will be essential reading for advanced teaching and research training in the fields of science and technology studies, and media and communication studies.

Book Organizational Learning and Technological Change

Download or read book Organizational Learning and Technological Change written by Cristina Zucchermaglio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What the Book Is About This book is about the problem of organizational learning, that is the analysis of organizations conceived as learning systems. In order to survive in a period of a rapid change, organizations must innovate and than to develop and exploit their abilities to learn. The most innovative organizations are those that can respond with great efficiency to internal and external changes. They respond to and generate technological change by acting as effective learning systems. They maximize the learning potential of ongoing and "normal" work activities. The organizational structure and the technology allow members to learn while the organizations itself learns from its members. So organizations reach high levels of innovation when structured to take advantage of the social, distributed, participative, situated processes of learning developed by its members in interaction with the technological environment. Organizations should consider learning as an explicit "productive" objective. They must create integrated learning mechanisms, that encompass technological tools, reward and incentive systems, human resource practices, belief systems, access to information, communication and mobility patterns, performance appraisal systems, organizational practices and structures. The design of efficient learning organizations requires cognitive, technological and social analyses. All the computer-based technologies (e. g. office automation, communication and group decision support) not only those devoted to and used in training activities, have to be considered as tools for organizational learning and innovation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking an international and comparative perspective, this book focuses on the relationship between industrial training and technological change in three major global economies – the UK, USA and Japan. The contributors, an international group of leading researchers, look at the origins and development of training in these countries, and analyse the benefits resulting from the interaction of a skilled workforce and technological change. This analysis of training in major industrial nations reveals the full complexity of the relationship between labour and technological change. It shows the value of an approach which is both historical and comparative, and highlights the importance of education and training as a necessary basis for successful innovation.

Book Factors Influencing Organizational Acceptance of Technological Change in Training

Download or read book Factors Influencing Organizational Acceptance of Technological Change in Training written by C. Dennis Wylie and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research was conducted to develop a model of factors influencing user acceptance. The model reflected reviews of the literature on innovation acceptance, technology transfer, and organizational development; review of official directives and instructions bearing on training device development, acquisition, and use; and interviews with personnel representing most of the organizational 'players' in the Navy's trainer development, acquisition, and use process. In the interviews, very different points of view were expressed by members of the researcher, funder, developer, and user communities. Each community appeared governed by its own perspective, while holding attitudes toward the other communities ranging from sympathetic to antagonistic. It was hypothesized that many problems of innovation acceptance are caused by the present limited interactions and feedback loops among these communities. The model which was developed has been found useful in structuring thinking about problems of innovation acceptance. It was hypothesized that it will be useful in identifying organizational processes that might benefit from change, and identifying areas where future research on the acceptance process may have the greatest impact.

Book Technological Change Employment Qualifications and Training

Download or read book Technological Change Employment Qualifications and Training written by Arndt Sorge and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A conference examined the socioeconomic challenges of technological and educational change throughout the European community. One hundred fifty representatives from a cross section of countries and agencies involved in education, training, and employment gathered to discuss the following themes: the transition from initial training to employment with specific reference to the new technologies and the need for vocational education; training needs of management, employers, and employees in regard to new technologies; information technology and a changing society; and polarization or depolarization of qualification structures. The following were the main conclusions of the conference. Qualifications are not directly and narrowly determined by technical innovation. The relationship between present and future job contents and training is indirect and complex, and a new relationship between education and training is needed to master skills in a future job. Although they may be unaware of it, politicians, trade unions, and employers play an important role in exercising choices shaping education and training arrangements and technological change. The considerable need for adult training and retraining has made consideration of new training methods an urgent matter. Small and medium-sized enterprises are faced with special problems, including greater difficulties in administering systematic training, and often a lower capacity for technical innovation. (MN)
