Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work-related learning can be broadly seen to be concerned with all forms of education and training closely related to the daily work of (new) employees, and is increasingly playing a central role in the lives of individuals, groups or teams and the agenda’s of organizations. However, as this area of study becomes more prominent, debates have opened about the nature of the field, as well as about its configurations and effects. For example, some authors have a broad definition of WRL and define it as learning for work, at work and through work, ranging from formal, through semi-structured to informal learning. Others prefer to use the concept of WRL mainly in connection to informal, incidental learning processes during work, leading to competent workplace learners. Formal and informal learning are distinguished from each other with respect to the level of intention (implicit/non-intentional/incidental versus deliberative/intentional/structured). Another point of discussion originates from the different ‘theoretical backgrounds’ of the authors: the ‘learning theorists’ versus the ‘organizational theorists’. The first group is mainly interested in the question of how learning comes about; the second group is predominantly interested in the search for factors affecting learning.

Download or read book Learning Transfer at Work written by PAUL. MATTHEWS and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to make sure your training gets results Learning, and the hoped-for subsequent behaviour change is a process, and yet we focus on the training event thinking that if we can only get that right, everything else will be wonderful. This is no more true for training than it is for a wedding. The quality of the wedding ceremony does not predict the quality of the subsequent marriage. There is a lot more to do after the ceremony, and there is also a lot more to do after the training event to get to 'happily ever after'. Sadly, very few people do what it takes to get even reasonable results from their training events. As Robin Hoyle puts it, "Learning transfer has been L&D's dirty little secret for too long. Too much of what learning teams do is well-intentioned but ultimately underwhelming." Sustainable, competitive advantage is not so much based on what an organisation and its people know, but what they do with what they know. The global training market is worth well over $200 billion, but how much of that 'lands' and makes a difference? If you are reading this page, you already know the answer: 'Not nearly enough'. Learning transfer is the elephant in the room for many in L&D, and this elephant is BIG! The case for proactively driving the learning transfer process is self-evident, and yet so many people choose to behave as if the elephant is not there. How can people keep ignoring it? This book is full of practical ideas you can use to do two things: 1. Convince those around you that the learning transfer elephant is real 2. Introduce processes and activities that deal with this elephant Doing this will get you better returns on your L&D budget, so seize the opportunity! Contents - Foreword by Andy Lancaster - What is learning transfer? - Why do we avoid it? - Where does it start? - Informal learning - The Learning Stack - Triggers that work - Mindset - Near and far transfer - Creating new habits - Support - Measurement - The brand of L&D - The practical stuff - 168 tips, ideas and tools - Companion reading - Index Note: Amazon provides a print on demand paperback. Book Work Teams Past Present and Future

Download or read book Work Teams Past Present and Future written by M.M. Beyerlein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book places current and future work team practices in historical context. Researchers from 10 countries have contributed chapters that represent developments specific to their regions and that illustrate the way ideas spread around the world. Some principles of effective teaming were independently discovered in different countries, and some principles emerged from the work of researchers like Trist, Emery, and Lewin and spread around the world. But all of the practices were driven by the dynamic tension between the psychology of the employee and business necessities. Theories and cases describe autonomous work groups, self-managed work teams, cell teams, and other collaborative work structures. Contributions to the design of such structures came from psychology, management, sociology, industrial engineering, and manufacturing. Because of the challenges inherent in reorganising work around teams instead of individuals, organizations are at different stages in evolving into 21st century work systems.
