Book The Train from Outer Space

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brady lost his father over a year ago and is still coping by refusing to care about anything anymore. He's failing in school, rejecting the efforts of his friend Franky to help him and lashing out at his mother for dating Brady's science teacher, Mr. Tibbetts. Then his dog, Skip, hears something outside one night and Brady follows him out into the darkness where they find a strange bio-mechanical train which tries to run over Brady. He escapes with Skip only to find that Skip has stolen something off the train, a strange, dark, glowing tube. Brady's mother doesn't believe his tale, so he calls Franky and together they find the tiny alien (Lil Dude) hidden in the tube. As Brady and Franky try to figure out what to do with this strangely recalcitrant little creature, a larger alien, Rotaxis prowls the neighborhood, looking for the stolen tube. And although Rotaxis has a perfectly competent, shape changing, wise cracking, personal assistant, Chimera, he refuses her offers of assistance and in doing so, manages to send Earth through a wormhole. Brady and Franky wake the next morning to see a lime green sky, three suns, and a string of planets now on a collision course with Earth. When neither Mr. Tibbetts or the conspiracy nut sheriff, Sheriff Joe, can figure out what to do, Brady grows desperate. And when Rotaxis manages to hunt them down, Brady and Franky steal his shape shifting train space craft and head out into the galaxy with Lil Dude and (unbeknownst to them) Chimera, to search for the Wormhole Reverser that will save the planet. As Brady navigates through the galaxy, he regains his confidence and remembers what his father said about taking responsibility. As the voice of the still unseen Chimera guides them safely toward their destination, Brady bonds with the ship and begins to suspect that the tale Lil Dude has told them is not the entire truth. After an excursion to another planet where Brady and Franky face incredible creatures, some of whom want them for supper and others who re-open their hearts, the kids find the Wormhole Reverser. But on the journey home, Brady discovers that Lil Dude not only intended to destroy the Earth, but that it is all part of an inter-galactic game. And now Brady is part of it, and must win at all costs. Franky and Brady return to Earth, where, with the help of Mr. Tibbetts, Sheriff Joe and the real Rotaxis, Brady races against time to save the world. And when the battle is over and the Earth returns to its normal orbit, Brady wants nothing more than to go home and start his real life again. Too bad that somewhere in the galaxy, Brady's name appears on the game board & nd another game is just about to begin.

  • Author : Wolfgang Schivelbusch
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2014-05-06
  • ISBN : 0520957903

Download or read book The Railway Journey written by Wolfgang Schivelbusch and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of constant technological change upon our perception of the world is so pervasive as to have become a commonplace of modern society. But this was not always the case; as Wolfgang Schivelbusch points out in this fascinating study, our adaptation to technological change—the development of our modern, industrialized consciousness—was very much a learned behavior. In The Railway Journey, Schivelbusch examines the origins of this industrialized consciousness by exploring the reaction in the nineteenth century to the first dramatic avatar of technological change, the railroad. In a highly original and engaging fashion, Schivelbusch discusses the ways in which our perceptions of distance, time, autonomy, speed, and risk were altered by railway travel. As a history of the surprising ways in which technology and culture interact, this book covers a wide range of topics, including the changing perception of landscapes, the death of conversation while traveling, the problematic nature of the railway compartment, the space of glass architecture, the pathology of the railway journey, industrial fatigue and the history of shock, and the railroad and the city. Belonging to a distinguished European tradition of critical sociology best exemplified by the work of Georg Simmel and Walter Benjamin, The Railway Journey is anchored in rich empirical data and full of striking insights about railway travel, the industrial revolution, and technological change. Now updated with a new preface, The Railway Journey is an invaluable resource for readers interested in nineteenth-century culture and technology and the prehistory of modern media and digitalization.

Book Train Travel as Embodied Space Time in Narrative Theory

Download or read book Train Travel as Embodied Space Time in Narrative Theory written by Atsuko Sakaki and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-03 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Train Travel as Embodied Space-Time in Narrative Theory argues that the train is a loaded trope for reconfiguring narrative theories past their “spatial turn.” Atsuko Sakaki’s method exploits intensive and rigorous close reading of literary and cinematic narratives on one hand, and on the other hand interdisciplinary perspectives that draw out larger connections to narrative theory. The book utilizes not only narratological frameworks but also concepts of space-focused humanity oriented social sciences, such as human geography, mobility studies, tourism studies, and qualitative/experience-based ethnography, in their post “narrative turn.” On this interface of narrative studies and spatial studies, this book pays concerted attention to the formation of affordances, or relations in which the human subject uses a space-time and things in it, in terms of passenger experience of the train carriage and its extension. Book excerpt: A secret agent aboard a galactic railroad must derail a sinister conspiracy in this “rip-roaring” thriller by the author of Star Wars: Thrawn (Publishers Weekly). The universe is a dangerous place, a fact violently brought home to Frank Compton for perhaps the thousandth time when a stranger delivering a message dies right in front of him. An operative for Western Alliance Intelligence until his whistle-blowing activities got him fired, Compton is now being sought out by the Spiders, the robotic alien beings responsible for the upkeep and operation of the Quadrail transportation system, which connects the galaxy’s twelve inhabited empires. The discovery of a sinister plot to use the Quadrail for ill has brought the Spiders to Compton—for only someone possessing the former agent’s unique skills can stop the scheme for good. But when Compton leaves Earth behind—joining forces with Bayta, the Spiders’ beautiful, half-human representative aboard the Quadrail—the terrifying scope of a vast, galaxy-wide conspiracy begins to reveal itself. Targeted on all sides by alien assassins of every shape and species, Compton and his enigmatic new partner are suddenly in a race against a clock ticking down to an irreversible doomsday, one in which the galactic night train will derail, carrying all members of humanity screaming to their deaths. The first in the Quadrail series from the Hugo Award–winning author of Blackcollar and many New York Times–bestselling Star Wars novels, Night Train to Rigel is an action-packed “great read” (Booklist).
