Book Fred Barton and the Warlords Horses of China

Download or read book Fred Barton and the Warlords Horses of China written by Larry Weirather and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-11-18 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years before World War I, Montana cowboy Fred Barton was employed by Czar Nicholas II to help establish a horse ranch--the largest in the world--in Siberia to supply the Russian military. Barton later assembled a group of American rodeo stars and drove horses across Mongolia for the war-lords of northern China, creating a 250,000 acre ranch in Shanxi Province. Along the way, Barton became part of an unofficial U.S. intelligence network in the Far East, bred a new type of horse from Russian, Mongolian and American stock and promoted the lifestyle of the open range cowboy. Returning to America, he married one of the wealthiest widows in the Southwest and hobnobbed with Western film stars at a time when Hollywood was constructing the modern myth of the Old West, just as open range cowboy life was disappearing.

Book Riders of the Coyote Moon

Download or read book Riders of the Coyote Moon written by L. P. Holmes and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disputed land pits two Indian tribes against each other in a life-or-death battle! Reece Canby spent years as a youngster on the nearby Mescalero Apache reservation. By treaty, the Mescalero tribe owns the Sentinel Basin. But the Mescaleros’ grazing land is desired by members of the Teepee tribe, who are looking to expand their cattle herd. The Teepees stir up trouble with the Mescaleros so that the federal government will have to intervene. Dobe and Ponco, two Mescaleros Reece has known since childhood, stand accused of cattle rustling by two witnesses employed by Teepee. The trial splits the town of Cassadora, with Reece Canby and a few others the only ones sympathetic to the Apaches’ land claim. It certainly looks like the Teepees have succeeded when the two Mescalero riders are found guilty, but Reece has the verdict reversed after one of the eyewitnesses confesses that the rustling charge was a fraud. Yet Dobe and Ponco are found lynched soon after, and the town’s sheriff, who has thrown his allegiance with the Teepees, is reluctant to investigate the unsolved murders. A bloody conflict seems inevitable unless the lynchers can be indentified and brought to justice. It’s a desperate race against time for Reece Canby and his allies in this thrilling tale of frontier justice and morality. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction that takes place in the old West. Westerns—books about outlaws, sheriffs, chiefs and warriors, cowboys and Indians—are a genre in which we publish regularly. Our list includes international bestselling authors like Zane Gray and Louis L’Amour, and many more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is American roots music? Any definition must account for a kaleidoscope of genres from bluegrass to blues, western swing to jazz, soul and gospel to rock and reggae, Cajun to Celtic. It must encompass the work of artists as diverse as Alice Gerard and Alison Krauss, George Thorogood and Sun Ra, Bela Fleck and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, the Blake Babies and Billy Strings. What do all these artists and music styles have in common? The answer is a record label born in the wake of the American folk revival and 1960s movement politics, formed around the eclectic tastes and audacious ideals of three recent college grads who lived, listened, and worked together. The answer is Rounder Records. For more than fifty years, Rounder has been the world's leading label for folk music of all kinds. David Menconi's book is the label's definitive history, drawing on previously untapped archives and extensive interviews with artists, Rounder staff, and founders Ken Irwin, Marian Leighton Levy, and Bill Nowlin. Rounder's founders blended ingenuity and independence with serendipity and an unfailing belief in the small-d democratic power of music to connect and inspire people, forging creative partnerships that resulted in one of the most eclectic and creative catalogs in the history of recorded music. Placing Rounder in the company of similarly influential labels like Stax, Motown, and Blue Note, this story is destined to delight anyone who cares about the place of music in American culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Black Rock Desert, when Lee Cone is hired by Braz Boland to “chouse” a herd of horses from Carbide Junction into Maacama Basin through Black Rock Desert, he has no idea that it will reignite the old enmity between himself and Tasker Scott. Cone had left the basin two years earlier, when the girl he loved married Scott. When the horse herd reaches Antelope, the basin’s town, Boland refuses to pay Cone because of a horse stampede that happened going through the pass into the basin. Cone quickly learns that Scott has been running rough-shod over the basin and that his old partner in the Flat T Ranch, Buck Theodore, has been made destitute due to the rustling of their stock. Cone is determined to find out what has been going on in the basin, even if it means hurting the woman he once loved. In the title story, Buck English has been a hard and bitter loner willing to step outside the law ever since his father, Martin, former sheriff of the county, had been killed by outlaws. A friend of Martin’s, Jack Carleton, is sheriff now as well as the owner of the Red Mesa Ranch. Carleton fears that someday he will have to go after Buck if he continues on the trail he is on. To that end, he hires Buck to take over the ramrodding of his ranch as his duties as sheriff do not allow him to tend to the duties of his ranch, which has been suffering from rustling. Buck agrees, but he must submit to Carleton’s order that gunplay is not allowed.
