Download or read book Tragedy on Jackass Mountain written by Charles Scheideman and published by Harbour Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-11 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Former RCMP Sergeant Charlie Scheideman, author of Policing the Fringe: The Curious Life of a Small-Town Mountie, is back with the same wry humour and a new collection of incredible stories drawn from his twenty-seven years of patrolling the small communities of the interior of British Columbia. These new adventures have him re-polishing his boots and relaying untold tales, such as the lone officer who takes on three legendary hard-fighting drunks, earning him the respect of the citizens of Prince George including the louts he single-handedly flattened. An escape from a youth detention centre takes a troubled young man to new heights—in a stolen airplane—that he narrowly survives after crashing into a mountainside. Here too are stories conveying the sad truth and tragic consequences of all-too-common alcohol abuse, such as when an innocent man survives an alcohol-induced multi-vehicle accident on Jackass Mountain—twice—only to be taken by a determined Grim Reaper as he aids another motorist. Scheideman illustrates that "fate looks after some of us" in another story where the extremely drunk driver and passengers of a violent single car accident miraculously survive. The strangest things seem to happen in isolated towns, and Scheideman's latest assortment of intriguing tales recounts more of his experiences from the absurd to tragic. This new collection leaves the reader with renewed admiration and wonder for the men and women who uphold the law in some of BC's more lawless regions.
Download or read book When Grampa was a Mountie written by Charles Scheideman and published by Agio Publishing House. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Grampa was a Mountie is the third book based on Charlie Scheideman's 27 years of police work in the Interior of BC. The first two - Policing the Fringe and Tragedy on Jackass Mountain - ranked high on the BC bestsellers lists for several months after their release. This book is again a collection of short stories - some are funny, some gruesome and some just tell things the way they were. Some accounts reveal the physical and mental hardships a few RCMP members have suffered for their dedication to duty and their willingness to serve in spite of the obvious danger. Scheideman's goal in all three books has been to portray to later generations small-town police life as closely as possible to the way things really were. The longest story, Fred Quilt Frame-Up, is about two RCMP constables at Alexis Creek who were falsely accused of beating a First Nations elder to death. The conspiracy to discredit these policemen and the RCMP held tight for years - until the key witness's deathbed confession. The original accusations became front page stories internationally; Scheideman's account sets out the facts that have not been public knowledge up to now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.
Download or read book A Day to Die For written by Graham Ratcliffe and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the night of 10-11 May 1996, eight climbers perished in what remains the worst disaster in Everest's history. Following the tragedy, numerous accounts were published, with Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air becoming an international bestseller. But has the whole story been told? A Day to Die For reveals the full, startling facts that led to the tragedy. Graham Ratcliffe, the first British climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest twice, was a first-hand witness, having spent the night on Everest's South Col at 26,000 ft, sheltering from the deadly storm. For years, he has shouldered a burden of guilt, feeling that he and his teammates could have saved lives that fateful night. His quest for answers has led to discoveries so important to an understanding of the disaster that he now questions why these facts were not made public sooner. History is dotted with high-profile disasters that both horrify and capture the attention of the public, but very rarely is our view of them revised to such devastating effect.

Book excerpt: A classic he-said-she-said romantic comedy! This updated anniversary edition offers story-behind-the-story revelations from author Wendelin Van Draanen. The first time she saw him, she flipped. The first time he saw her, he ran. That was the second grade, but not much has changed by the seventh. Juli says: “My Bryce. Still walking around with my first kiss.” He says: “It’s been six years of strategic avoidance and social discomfort.” But in the eighth grade everything gets turned upside down: just as Bryce is thinking that there’s maybe more to Juli than meets the eye, she’s thinking that he’s not quite all he seemed. This is a classic romantic comedy of errors told in alternating chapters by two fresh, funny voices. The updated anniversary edition contains 32 pages of extra backmatter: essays from Wendelin Van Draanen on her sources of inspiration, on the making of the movie of Flipped, on why she’ll never write a sequel, and a selection of the amazing fan mail she’s received. Awards and accolades for Flipped: SLJ Top 100 Children’s Novels of all time IRA-CBC Children’s Choice IRA Teacher’s Choice Honor winner, Judy Lopez Memorial Award/WNBA Winner of the California Young Reader Medal “We flipped over this fantastic book, its gutsy girl Juli and its wise, wonderful ending.” — The Chicago Tribune “Van Draanen has another winner in this eighth-grade ‘he-said, she-said’ romance. A fast, funny, egg-cellent winner.” — SLJ, Starred review “With a charismatic leading lady kids will flip over, a compelling dynamic between the two narrators and a resonant ending, this novel is a great deal larger than the sum of its parts.” —Publishers Weekly, Starred review

Download or read book A Branch of the Sky written by Steve Sorensen and published by Picacho. This book was released on 2018-07-15 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The day he finished high school in 1967, Steve Sorensen began a fifty-year adventure in the southern Sierra Nevada. After learning to rock climb in Yosemite Valley, Sorensen went on to spend fourteen years working for Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, where he became the leader of a backcountry crew, a skilled tree faller, an emergency medical technician, a wildland firefighter, a backcountry snow surveyor, and a mule packer. Working with park botanists, he developed new techniques for restoring damaged meadows, and his crews rehabilitated miles of eroded trails throughout the parks. Later he wrote the first two hiking guidebooks for the park’s frontcountry trails. Sorensen’s heartfelt tales of life in the southern Sierra Nevada are told with style and humor, both informative and touching at the same time. Though his blunt criticism of the National Park Service might anger some, many park employees will recognize the honesty and accuracy of his observations. A Branch of the Sky is infused with the love and respect Sorensen felt for his friends and coworkers, many of whom he lost to accidents and disease. How he made his peace with their ghosts is a unique and captivating story, beautifully told.
