Book Traffic Measurement on the Internet

Download or read book Traffic Measurement on the Internet written by Tao Li and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-30 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traffic Measurement on the Internet presents several novel online measurement methods that are compact and fast. Traffic measurement provides critical real-world data for service providers and network administrations to perform capacity planning, accounting and billing, anomaly detection, and service provision. Statistical methods play important roles in many measurement functions including: system designing, model building, formula deriving, and error analyzing. One of the greatest challenges in designing an online measurement function is to minimize the per-packet processing time in order to keep up with the line speed of the modern routers. This book also introduces a challenging problem – the measurement of per-flow information in high-speed networks, as well as, the solution. The last chapter discusses origin-destination flow measurement.

Book Traffic Measurement for Big Network Data

Download or read book Traffic Measurement for Big Network Data written by Shigang Chen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents several compact and fast methods for online traffic measurement of big network data. It describes challenges of online traffic measurement, discusses the state of the field, and provides an overview of the potential solutions to major problems. The authors introduce the problem of per-flow size measurement for big network data and present a fast and scalable counter architecture, called Counter Tree, which leverages a two-dimensional counter sharing scheme to achieve far better memory efficiency and significantly extend estimation range. Unlike traditional approaches to cardinality estimation problems that allocate a separated data structure (called estimator) for each flow, this book takes a different design path by viewing all the flows together as a whole: each flow is allocated with a virtual estimator, and these virtual estimators share a common memory space. A framework of virtual estimators is designed to apply the idea of sharing to an array of cardinality estimation solutions, achieving far better memory efficiency than the best existing work. To conclude, the authors discuss persistent spread estimation in high-speed networks. They offer a compact data structure called multi-virtual bitmap, which can estimate the cardinality of the intersection of an arbitrary number of sets. Using multi-virtual bitmaps, an implementation that can deliver high estimation accuracy under a very tight memory space is presented. The results of these experiments will surprise both professionals in the field and advanced-level students interested in the topic. By providing both an overview and the results of specific experiments, this book is useful for those new to online traffic measurement and experts on the topic.

Book excerpt: Although the Internet is now a planet-wide communication medium, we have remarkably little quantitative understanding of it. This ground breaking book provides a comprehensive overview of the important field of Internet Measurement, and includes a first detailed look at three areas: * measurements of Internet infrastructure: routers, links, network connectivity and bandwidth, * measurements of traffic on the Internet: packets, bytes, flows, sessions, etc., * measurements of various key Internet applications: DNS, Web, Peer-to-Peer, and networked games. Each area is discussed in depth, covering the challenges faced (such as data availability, data management and statistical issues), the tools and methods that are available to address those challenges, and the state of current knowledge in the area. In addition, the book contains extensive background material needed for Internet measurement, including overviews of Internet architecture and essential statistical methods. It also covers important emerging areas in Internet measurement: anonymization issues and methods, how measurements can be used for network security, and examples of successful tools and systems currently used for Internet measurement. It is essential reading for practitioners, researchers and analysts of Internet traffic, and students taking advanced Networking, Internet Security or other specialist courses relying on Internet Measurement. • Pages : 194 pages

Download or read book The Internet Ecosystem written by Manuel Palacín Mateo and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of the interconnection status-quo between content providers and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) is essential to understand the evolution of the Internet ecosystem. In the last years we have witnessed a spectacular increase of Internet traffic, especially multimedia content, which has driven both content providers and operators to rethink their interconnection models. This thesis performs an extensive traffic analysis from two perspectives to understand the rationale behind the Internet players. First, we analyse the traffic from the perspective of the evolution of the Internet protocols. Analyzing the protocols we pretend to observe whether the traffic pattern has changed while new applications have emerged and the demand have exploded. Second, we collect a dataset of Internet traces to evaluate the connectivity between access ISPs and the most popular content providers. Analyzing the Internet traces we want to identify the correlations in the interconnection models that different Internet players use.

This books extensive treatment of HTTP/1.1 and its interaction with other network protocols make it an indispensable resource for both practitioners and students. Providing both the evolution and complete details of the basic building blocks of the Web, Web Protocols and Practice begins with an overview of Web software components and follows up with a description of the suite of protocols that form the semantic core of how content is delivered on the Web. The book later examines Web measurement and workload characterization and presents a cutting-edge report on Web caching and multimedia streaming. It concludes with a discussion on research perspectives that highlight topics that may affect the future evolution of the Web. Numerous examples and case studies thr

Book Mobile Internet Traffic Measurement and Modeling

Download or read book Mobile Internet Traffic Measurement and Modeling written by consultant expert mohamed taha and published by . This book was released on 2021-02 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SummaryNew mobile networks of the third and evolved second generation have beendeployed that enable a mobile accessible, always available wireless Internet. To exploit the full potential from those new mobile access networktechnologies, and to meet high user expectations, these networks need to bewell designed, dimensioned and deployed. An important basis for these tasksare accurate traffic models, and sound traffic estimates. However, suchknowledge does not yet exist for mobile networks. In this thesis, measurements from commercially deployed General PacketRadio Service (GPRS) networks are investigated to derive novel knowledge onmobile network usage and its traffic characteristics to fill this gap.As a prerequisite, a measurement setup has been developed, allowing parallelcapturing of user payload data at the level of IP packets and mobile networkspecific events related to session and mobility management. Based on thissetup we conducted the following four studies.First, a comprehensive study on the application and session usage in GPRS ispresented. It reveals the absolute dominance of the novel Wireless ApplicationProtocol (WAP) and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) services, in terms oftraffic volume and usage frequency.Second, models for WAP and MMS application flows are derived. We showthat the distribution of the length of those flows is not heavy-tailed.Furthermore, we show that WAP and MMS flows are very short in terms ofnumber of packets exchanged per session.Third, the mobility of GPRS users is investigated. We develop a model for theso-called perceived mobility, based on GPRS mobility management events. Weshow that users are moderately mobile currently, leading to small impacts onperformance. According to our model the cell reselection inter-arrival times canbe best modeled with heavy-tailed distributions.Fourth, we assess the self-similarity property of GPRS traffic. We separatelystudy aggregated, web related and WAP related traffic. Based on thestatistically very robust Hurst estimation method by Abry and Veitch we showthat GPRS traffic arrival processes are long-range dependent (LRD).

Book Measurements of Wide Area Internet Traffic

Download or read book Measurements of Wide Area Internet Traffic written by University of California, Berkeley. Computer Science Division and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurement and analusis of current behavior are valuable techniques for the study of computer networks. In addition to providing insight into the operation and usage patterns of present networks, the results can be used to create realistic models of their traffic sources. Such models are a key component of the analytic and simulation studies often undertaken in the design of future networks. This paper presents measurements of wide area Internet traffic gathered at the junction between a large industrial research laboratory and the rest of the Internet. Using bar graphs and histograms, it shows the statistics obtained for packet counts, byte counts, and packet length frequencies, broken down by major transport protocols and network services.
