The Puritans, the Dutch, the Swedes, the Cavaliers, the Spanish, and the French all brought with them their traditions, transplanted them and developed them. The anglo-saxon, being the dominant racial stock, has given us most of our traditions. In the course of its 151 years of existence, the Marine Corps has developed many fine traditions. There are tradi tions relating to the employment of Marines, traditions of the uniform, and traditions exemplifying their physical, mental, and moral qualities. These traditions bring to light the out of the way places of the world. They account for our sword. They have glorified the hard-boiled sergeant. And they exemplify the best in human character. Book The Marine Corps in Support of the Fleet Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Marine Corps in Support of the Fleet Classic Reprint written by Ellis Brumaghim Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Marine Corps in Support of the Fleet You know your Corps history. How we have actively participated in every war in which our nation has engaged, expeditions on every sea, and to every continent except Australia, our own Civil and Indian Wars, quelling riots, protecting American life, property, mail, and Presidents, and a long list of other activities in which Marines have played an im portant part in our history and contact with other nations. I am reminded of a factory in Baltimore which had a large sign painted across the front of the building, Born in Baltimore, raised everywhere. It was an umbrella factory. The Marine Corps was born in Philadelphia in 177 5 and Operates everywhere. End of historical sketch. We are justly proud of our record, and sing with pride that part of our Marine Hymn - From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli, We Fight Our Country's Battles on the Land as on the Sea. But who took us to the land where we fought? Who took us across the sea? Upon whom did the government place the initial responsibility for the enforcement of its determined policy? The navy. The Navy has been our father and mother, tutored us during our childhood days, afforded Opportunities for us to learn by experience, watched and guard ed our growth to manhood, and demanded of our nation that we be allowed to grow strong and sufficient to perform the tasks which she has assigned to us. DO not weaken in that demand. We say, that by Congressional action, we are the oldest branch of the services. That's our story, and we'll stick to it. But we are proud of that tutelage, of that association, of the fact that the Navy has given us a job that measures up to the responsibility of any other element of the fleet. Book The Marine Corps Way of War

Download or read book The Marine Corps Way of War written by Anthony Piscitelli and published by . This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Marine Corps Way of War examines the evolving doctrine, weapons, and capability of the United States Marine Corps during the four decades since our last great conflict in Asia. As author Anthony Piscitelli demonstrates, the USMC has maintained its position as the nation's foremost striking force while shifting its thrust from a reliance upon attrition to a return to maneuver warfare. In Indochina, for example, the Marines not only held territory but engaged in now-legendary confrontational battles at Hue, Khe Sanh. As a percentage of those engaged, the Marines suffered higher casualties than any other branch of the service. In the post-Vietnam assessment, however, the USMC ingrained aspects of Asian warfare as offered by Sun Tzu, and returned to its historical DNA in fighting "small wars" to evolve a superior alternative to the battlefield. The institutionalization of maneuver philosophy began with the Marine Corps' educational system, analyzing the actual battle-space of warfare--be it humanitarian assistance, regular set-piece battles, or irregular guerrilla war--and the role that the leadership cadre of the Marine Corps played in this evolutionary transition from attrition to maneuver. Author Piscatelli explains the evolution by using traditional and first-person accounts by the prime movers of this paradigm shift. This change has sometimes been misportrayed, including by the Congressional Military Reform Caucus, as a disruptive or forced evolution. This is simply not the case, as the analyses by individuals from high-level commanders to junior officers on the ground in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, demonstrate. The ability of the Marines to impact the battlefield--and help achieve our strategic goals--has only increased during the post-Cold War era.Throughout The Marine Corps Way of War: The Evolution of the U.S. Marine Corps from Attrition to Maneuver Warfare in the Post-Vietnam Era, one thing remains clear: the voices of the Marines themselves, in action or through analysis, describing how "the few, the proud" will continue to be America's cutting-edge in the future as we move through the 21st Century. This new work is must-reading for not only every Marine, but for everyone interested in the evolution of the world's finest military force.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The article reprinted here was originally published in the Marine Corps Gazette. It is well worth reading because it answers many questions which arise in the minds of those who come into contact with marines. Why do men enlist in the Marines? Why do so many of them spend their whole working lives in this service without thought of great financial reward? Why do they cling so tenaciously to certain uniforms, devices, songs and slogans? Captain Oliver P. Smith, U.S.M.C., explains these things in a way that holds the reader's interest from the first line to the last."--p. [3].

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Marine Corps Competitive Marksmanship This history is dedicated to those Marines who played a dramatic role in the colorful early chapter in the history of Marine Corps marksmanship. The triumphs and the defeats at Camp Perry, Wakefield, and Sea Girt played a fundamental part in the training and molding of combat Marines. The firing lines of these famous ranges produced shooters and techniques that augured well the successful battles of France, Nicaragua, Haiti, the Pacific Isles and Korea. As Marines representing the Corps in competitive shooting contributed to our battlefield success in the past so newshooters will in the future. In the final analysis it is the individual who will close with the enemy and destroy him. It is here that the word Distinguished is realized in its most honored sense. Book The United States Marine Corps in the World War Classic Reprint

Download or read book The United States Marine Corps in the World War Classic Reprint written by Edwin N. McClellan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States Marine Corps in the World War This regiment was soon joined by the Sixth Regiment and the Sixth Machine Gun Battalion Of Marines, and the Fourth Brigade Of Marines was organized, and as one of the two Infantry brigades Of the Second Division of Regulars engaged in actual battle in no less than eight distinct operations in France, of which four were major opera tions. The French Army recognized the splendid work of the Fifth and Sixth Regiments of Marines by citing them no less than three times in Army orders for achievements in the chateau-thierry sector, in the aisne-marne (soissons) Offensive, and in the meuse-argonne (champagne). The Sixth Machine Gun Battalion was similarly cited for its work in the chateau-thierry sector and Aisne - Marne (soissons) offensive. The Fourth Brigade received a similar cita tion for its work in the Chateau - Thierry sector. Since two French Army citations are sufficient to make an organization eligible for the award of the French fourragere, the high standard Of the Marine units is evident. Information was received in January, 1920, that the War Department had accepted the award of the French fourragere in the colors of the ribbon of the Croix de Guerre for several Army organi zations and the three units of the Fourth Brigade. Within one year after the outbreak of war the Marine Corps placed about as many enlisted men in France as there were in the Marine Cor s when war was declared. During t e month of June, 1918, when the battle deaths around Hill 142, Bouresches, Belleau Wood, and Vaux, of Americans attached to the Second Division amounted to (of which at least were Marines) and the nonfatal casualties to more (of which were Marines), the legislative strength of the Marine Corps was but Officers and enlisted men; the actual strength on June 30, 1918, including reserves, was officers and enlisted men, and of this total about 300 Officers and enlisted men were in France. These latter figures include those Marines who suffered casualties in the battles of June, 1918. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
