Book Kapporos Then and Now Toward a More Compassionate Tradition

Download or read book Kapporos Then and Now Toward a More Compassionate Tradition written by Yonassan Gershom and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year, right before Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, there is a cultural war in certain Jewish neighborhoods over a ceremony called Kapporos, in which a chicken is slaughtered just before the holy day. The animal rights people show up claiming, "Meat is murder!" while the Orthodox and Hasidic Jews who practice this ceremony accuse the activists of antisemitism and violating their freedom of religion. Epithets fly and confrontations occur across the barricades, but nobody is really listening to each other. Rabbi Gershom seeks to build a bridge of understanding between these two warring camps. On the one hand, he opposes using live chickens as Kapporos, and, like many other religious Jews before him, advocates giving money to charity instead. But on the other hand, he is himself a Hasid who understands and believes in the kabbalistic principle of ""raising holy sparks"" so central to the ceremony. In fact, he says, it is that very mysticism that has led him not to use chickens for the ritual.

Book The Urgency of Now

Download or read book The Urgency of Now written by Angelicus-M. B. Onasanya and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-05-16 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of nation building has enjoyed currency in the discourse about the general development of countries around the world. Its global importance could be discerned in two different areas; nation-building as applied to efforts aimed at rebuilding a country after a war as in Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and so on; and nation-building with regard to efforts aimed at dealing with the sobering realities of failed or failing countries whose populations have been exploited, abused and mismanaged almost to the point of extinction. As can, and should be expected, Nigeria and Nigerians, at home and abroad, have not been exempt from these discourses especially in the past few years as the countrys nascent and fledging (?) democracy became embarrassingly threatened to the point of abortion within Nigeria and the international community of nations. In ones sober moments, the realisation that Nigeria is fast becoming another failed state procures rather scary thoughts.

Book The Secessionist States of America

Download or read book The Secessionist States of America written by Douglas MacKinnon and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of American families from every race, creed, and economic background are losing hope as the United States continues slide deeper into fiscal insanity and moral decay. Where will America stand when we lose our traditional values, border security, and limited government? Having gained insight from industry experts in farming, energy, infrastructure, and finance, author Douglas MacKinnon has outlined one alternative to our existing government in an entirely constitutional and legal approach—secession from the United States of America. President Abraham Lincoln once said, “This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it, or their revolutionary right to dismember or overthrow it.” With this patriotic wisdom of Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson in mind, MacKinnon also works in conjunction with a team of highly experienced individuals from Special-Ops, intelligence, the military, and constitutional law to provide you with the answers to why, how, when, and where as he outlines what secessionism would bring. Using maps, charts, and excerpts of previously published materials to supplement his own interviews and research, MacKinnon has written a powerful, one-of-a-kind book that will initiate conversation—and movement—throughout the country.

Book Arresting Images

Download or read book Arresting Images written by Steven C. Dubin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although contemporary art may sometimes shock us, more alarming are recent attempts to regulate its display. Drawing upon extensive interviews, a broad sampling of media accounts, legal documents and his own observations of important events, sociologist Steven Dubin surveys the recent trend in censorship of the visual arts, photography and film, as well as artistic upstarts such as video and performance art. He examines the dual meaning of arresting images--both the nature of art work which disarms its viewers and the social reaction to it. Arresting Images examines the battles which erupt when artists address such controversial issues as racial polarization, AIDS, gay-bashing and sexual inequality in their work.

Brown’s poetic concerns are both broad and intimate, and at their very core a distillation of the incredibly human: What is safety? Who is this nation? Where does freedom truly lie? Brown makes mythical pastorals to question the terrors to which we’ve become accustomed, and to celebrate how we survive. Poems of fatherhood, legacy, blackness, queerness, worship, and trauma are propelled into stunning clarity by Brown’s mastery, and his invention of the duplex—a combination of the sonnet, the ghazal, and the blues—is testament to his formal skill. The Tradition is a cutting and necessary collection, relentless in its quest for survival while reveling in a celebration of contradiction.
