Download or read book Cooperating Rivals written by Jeffrey K. Sosland and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the politics of water scarcity in the Middle East's Jordan River Basin (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and the Palestinian Authority) between 1920 and 2006. Jeffrey K. Sosland demonstrates that while water scarcity might generate political tension, it does not by itself precipitate war, nor is it likely to do so. At the same time, efforts to promote water cooperation, such as those initiated by the United States, have an identifiable political benefit by creating rules, building confidence, and reducing tensions among adversaries. Sosland concludes that while this alone might not resolve the overall conflict, it does create positive long-term value in achieving peace.

African beadwork, North American Indian silver, jade from the Far East and shellwork from the Pacific - these are just some of the beautiful pieces surveyed in this book. A team of experts explains how such jewellery has been made and worn, the relationship of the materials to the culture, and how the techniques of manufacture have survived for centuries. Even today traditional jewellery is still being made, although the repertoire is constantly enriched by new materials and influenced by modern taste. The majority of objects selected to illustrate the book are from the British Museum's extensive collections. Yet the book is much more than simply a guide to these collections, and the authors reflect in the various chapters on the types of materials, technological features, and the themes that characterise the regions of which they have a specialist knowledge, so that the book serves as an excellent introduction to the subject as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an indispensable and enlightening text by one of the most renowned art historians and design theorists, about the work of the great Marjan Unger. The Dutch art historian and jewellery expert Marjan Unger died back in 2018, at the age of seventy-two. Through her teaching and her myriad projects, exhibitions and publications, she influenced generations of jewellery artists and theorists in the applied disciplines. Yet one of her perhaps most enduring legacies is her doctoral thesis, Sieraad in Context, which she submitted in 2010.In her work, she endeavours to formulate a general definition of jewellery. Yet above all she also analyses to what extent jewellery is associated across the globe with different, sometimes contrary issues: in that all human fears but also desires have, in a sense, materialised around the world as objects of adornment.
