Book Traditional African Communalism and the Neo communal Spirit in Africa

Download or read book Traditional African Communalism and the Neo communal Spirit in Africa written by Wafula Muyila and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communalism in traditional African Societies has become a common theme in most discourses on African Philosophy. This has made it crucial that detailed studies be done on this way of life to establish its underlying philosophical tenets and its impact on the people and societies in Africa. This book examines the reality of communalism in traditional African societies, the underlying philosophical issues, and the influence it has continued to exert on the continent since the end of colonialism. The book shows that the sustenance of communalism in traditional African societies was greatly enhanced by the people's apparent orientation towards the past. The period at and after independence was dominated by a neo-communal spirit as an attempt by Africans to restore their traditional values and ways of life, and as a way of confronting the challenges of post independent era. The book concludes that communalism has had a far-reaching impact on the African people and their societies, so much so that it continues to manifest itself in various forms in contemporary Africa. This book is ideal for studies on traditional African culture and it legacy in the present.

It defends communalism against various criticisms and argues that when properly understood and harnessed, it could provide the necessary foundation for Africa's development.

Book excerpt: A close examination of African cyclic symbols, spatial categories, architecture, visual art and ritual life reveals the cosmo-biological bond connecting all of God's creation. Life is a gift of God, and everyone has the obligation to preserve and prolong it. The way to social harmony lies in going back to our cultural heritage and our past - African communalism, a system built on equity, respect for human rights and the rule of law. Any society - Church or State - that nurtures structural injustice deliberately, keeps the majority in abject poverty and installs mental and physical slavery eventually only prepares a pepper-soup for social violence and internecine civil war. In the words of John F. Kennedy "Those who make dialogue impossible, make violence inevitable."

Book Patterns of Thought in Africa and the West

Download or read book Patterns of Thought in Africa and the West written by Robin Horton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-07-13 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robin Horton's critical and creative writings on African religious thought have influenced anthropologists, philosophers, and all those interested in the comparative study of religion and thought. This selection of some of his classic papers, with a new introduction and postscript by the author, traces Horton's theoretical ideas over thirty years. In attempting to understand African religious thought, he also tackles broader issues in the history and sociology of thought, such as secularisation and modernisation. Part I is a critical assessment of two established interpretive approaches, the Symbolist and the Theological. Part II proposes an alternative 'Intellectualist' approach that emphasises the structural and processual similarities between religious and scientific thinking. The postscript appraises the Intellectualist approach in the light of theorising about religion and world views.

  • Pages : 164 pages

Download or read book Persons in Community written by Ronald Nicolson and published by University of Kwazulu Natal Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a distinctive African perspective on right and wrong? Do ethical frameworks differ across cultures? Is there such a thing as a common global ethic? Do traditional African ethical views have anything to contribute to this global ethic? Can traditional African ethics survive in a world increasingly dominated by a single global economy? The contributors to this book show that there are distinctive common strands in African ethical views, although these need to be examined and challenged. They apply these strands to very different contexts: the worlds of business, medicine, government, political change, and gender relationships. The book reveals that despite their rootedness in a past culture, African ethics are in a continuous state of development and change, and have a considerable contribution to make to an emerging global ethic. This book demands that the African voice is heard.
