This so-called Cankam literature was composed around the beginning of the common era in a language today known as "Classical Tamil". Ten anthologies of its poetry have survived. Its literary techniques and their presuppositions are presented here in detail on the basis of an analysis of one of these anthologies, the Kur-untokai, which is a collection of 401 short love poems. While the introduction and the last chapter, on poetic style, are also meant for the general student of literature, the second and third chapters will be of interest mainly to specialists. These deal with syntax (especially particle syntax) and with the poetological background of the poetry. The formal features described include the use of formulae; the organisation of a poetic universe in terms of themes, topoi and motifs; syntactic types, such as circular construction; rhetorical fi gures, such as metaphors, similes and insets; poetic ambiguity achieved through the use of a symbolic code; puns; and intertextual allusions.

Eliot disputes the common critical assertion that a poet's greatness lies in his most individual moments, when he diverges from tradition. Eliot explains his process of depersonalization through a chemical process. He says that the mind of artist is like neutral platinum. But, what would have happened if platinum, in a sense the mind wouldn't have taken part in that process? At another point, Eliot recommends that the emotion of poetry should be different from his personal emotion. As a reader, he may not like a poet, but the poet's work may be liked by the reader. Then, with what the reader should deal with? For without the present there would be no past. In that case, what are the duties of the present generation to establish the present? And what are the requirements of an individual to be an individual talent? This book figures out all these answers and the principles of Eliot's writing this essay.

Book excerpt: Many poems in the Chinese tradition come to us embedded in narratives purporting to tell the circumstances of their composition and performance. “Poetic competence” is demonstrated in these narratives through a person’s ability to influence the attitudes and behavior of others with poetic discourse. Such competence can be apprehended only in the context of a narrative, which sets forth a representation of the conditions of a poem’s production, performance, and reception. These narratives are not so much faithful historical records as ideal accounts of the operation of poetry. Such stories both fulfill and deny wishes for poetry and for the self; it is these wishes that merit our careful attention. As traced in Words Well Put, the vision of poetic competence evolved for over a millennium from calculated performances of inherited words to sincere passionate outbursts to displays of verbal wit combining calculation with the appearance of spontaneity. By the seventh century, calculation, passion, and wit had converged to produce a multivalent concept of competence as a repertoire of competencies to use as the occasion demanded. This book tells the story of the development of poetic competence to uncover the complexity of the concept and to identify the sources and exemplars of that complexity.
