Download or read book Trading With Asia Classic Reprint written by Frank Reed Eldridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trading With Asia It is of vital importance to the continued prosperity of the United States that new markets be developed to replace those of the countries with whom we formerly traded but whose effective buying capacity has been reduced by the consequences of war. American manufacturers must export greater quantities of their products than at present in order to keep running at full capacity the plants which have been enlarged to meet the demands of the last seven years and to continue to employ all American workmen at wages that will enable them to maintain unimpaired the American standard of living of which we are so justly proud. The Far East offers the great possibilities of an unexploited field, especially as the souls of China and India alone are rapidly developing industrially already need large quantities of American machines and metal goods of various types, and accept readily the prod ucts of American inventive genius and technical skill. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trading With the Far East The terms "Asia" and "Europe," applied by the Phoenicians and later by the Greeks to the sections occupying respectively the areas at the east and the west, were intended only as general designations for those respective sections; but have been retained as their permanent geographic names, while the general title now given by geographers to the Great Continent comprising both Europe and Asia is "Eurasia." Its area, combining the two sections which we call Europe and Asia, is 21,000,000 square miles, or 40% of the land surface of the world, and its population 1,350,000,000, or 75% of that of the entire globe. The boundary between Asia and Europe as generally accepted by geographers is the Ural Mountains and River, at the north, the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus Mountains, the Black Sea, and the Dardanelles. Interior Sparsely Settled The interior of the Asiatic continent, lying behind the narrow and densely populated coastal region running along the Indian and Pacific oceans, consists of deserts and semi-deserts in the central part, frozen tundras at the extreme north, and at the south great mountain ranges whose enormous areas and extreme altitude have given to a certain section thereof the title of "The Roof of the World." This great interior, which lies at an average level of about 15,000 feet above the sea, receives little moisture from the oceans, and is at the best but sparsely populated, Mongolia averaging little more than one person per square mile, Chinese Turkestan two per square mile, Siberia two per square mile, and Tibet four per square mile. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trading With Asia This book is intended to serve as a primer on Par Eastern trade. It is designed for the student, but it will be found useful by that large class of business men who have felt that they were approaching the great markets of the Orient without a proper knowledge of the fundamental facts concerning the history, government, and commerce of the Oriental peoples. It is designed to be informative rather than opinionative, and subjects of a controversial nature have been purposely omitted. I have striven to make it more a compact handbook than a descriptive or didactic treatise, and for that reason I have included only such references to habits and customs as were absolutely necessary to bring out important economic facts. The book is built upon the theory that a knowledge of commerce is essentially a knowledge of the reasons why certain commodities dominate the trade of certain regions. Predictions as to the possible growth of the import trade of the various countries are indulged in only sparingly as it is realized that such growth is dependent in the last analysis upon individual enterprise which is guided only by profitable return. To encourage unwise or fitful development of these Far Eastern markets is the last thing to be desired by those who have the ultimate growth of our foreign trade at heart. The present development, however, is analyzed fully with a view to pointing out the lines of permanent and profitable growth. Book The Rise of American Influence in Asia and the Pacific Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Rise of American Influence in Asia and the Pacific Classic Reprint written by Lawrence Henry Battistini and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of American Influence in Asia and the Pacific The United States took its place as one Of the sovereign nations of the world with the conclusion of the Treaty Of Paris in 1783 which terminated the Revolutionary War. By the terms of that treaty the territorial extent of the United States was limited on the west by the Mississippi River. Actually, most of the region west of the Appalachian Mountains was still largely unsettled territory, and nearly all of the population, less than four million in 1790, was concentrated along the Atlantic seaboard. Hence the United States at that time faced eastward, and the Atlantic was the broad highway which linked it commercially and culturally to Europe. Asia and the islands of the Pacific comprised a remote world, which could only be reached by circuitous and time-consum ing voyages. TO Americans Of this period this world was almost as unknown as Darkest Africa. When the United States acquired its independence the economic system was largely an agrarian one which supplied nearly all of the people's agricultural wants and depended on Europe, prin cipally England, for manufactured goods. Since the United States was then practically without industries that required imported raw materials and overseas markets for their finished products, its trading requirements were largely confined to the exchange of its own raw materials for manufactured items. During the early years of the Republic's development about 90 percent of all trade was with England. Trade with the Far East arose primarily because Of the enter prise Of the-seafaring New Englanders rather than because of any compelling need in America for the products Of that area. In searching for new routes and ports of call, these hardy New Englanders were motivated by the hard reality that independence from England and dissociation from her Empire had closed to them the the old trade routes and markets on which they had formerly prospered, particularly the once lucrative trade with the British West Indies.1 China was one of the first Asian lands to lure the American traders. In the very year that Washington was inaugu rated as the first president Of the Republic, fifteen American vessels called at Canton to take on cargoes of tea and silk.2 The luxury cargoes of these vessels were typical Of the early American trade with Asia. They were small in bulk and commanded high prices, but at the same time they were highly speculative and com prised only a small part of the total foreign trade of the United States at that time. Book The Chinese Commercial Guide

Download or read book The Chinese Commercial Guide written by Samuel Wells Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chinese Commercial Guide: Containing Treaties, Tariffs, Regulations, Tables, Etc., Useful in the Trade to China and Eastern Asia Still the advantages which attend the carrying out of the provisions of these recent treaties with the three great empires of Eastern Asia are, on the whole, likely to be greater than their difficulties and amidst all the imperfections and hindrances connected with these efl'orts to bring these peoples into their place among the family of nations, progress has been made. The treaties are no doubt far beyond the intelligence of even the rulers in all their bearings, and it is well that they should have a higher stand constantly before them than they would propose if left to themselves; but a reasonable hope may be indulged that more real benefits may be conferred by foreign influence acting through the operations of these treaties among the three nations than in any other way. It is by comparing the present condition of foreign intercourse in each of them with what it was at the expiration of the charter of the East India Company in 1834, that the advances really made can be best understood. Agricultural Trade With West Asia and Africa Our knowledge of economic and social conditions in Africa and west Asia in dicates strongly that a dynamic situation is in the making. Great developments and changes are taking place, which will have a marked impact upon future agri cultural trade. Emerging policies by several young nations, large-scale pro grams for agricultural development, rapidly increasing populations, rising standards of living, and development of mineral resources and industries are potent forces in this field. Their trends and effects will be increasingly significant to United States agriculture in the next five or ten years. The present report is one step toward providing information on this important area. It consists of a comprehensive statistical presentation of United States agricultural trade with all the countries of.africa and west Asia. Figures are given by countries from 1935 to 1956, and also by commodity groups and princi pal commodities from 1953 to 1956, covering both exports and imports. The statistical details are highlighted and summarized in a brief text accompanying the tables. It reviews the situation by principal commodities and important countries. Book Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf

Download or read book Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf written by Alexander Bubb and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-14 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest among Victorian readers in classical literature from Asia has been greatly underestimated. The popularity of the Arabian Nights and The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is well documented. Yet this was also an era in which freethinkers consulted the Quran, in which schoolchildren were given abridgements of the Ramayana to read, in which names like 'Kalidasa' and 'Firdusi' were carved on the façades of public libraries, and in which women's book clubs discussed Japanese poetry. But for the most part, such readers were not consulting the specialist publications of scholarly orientalists. What then were the translations that catalysed these intercultural encounters? Based on a unique methodology marrying translation theory with empirical techniques developed by historians of reading, this book shines light for the first time on the numerous amateur translators or 'popularizers', who were responsible for making these texts accessible and disseminating them to the Victorian general readership. Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf explains the process whereby popular translations were written, published, distributed to bookshops and libraries, and ultimately consumed by readers. It uses the working papers and correspondence of popularizers to demonstrate their techniques and motivations, while the responses of contemporary readers are traced through the pencil marginalia they left behind in dozens of original copies. In spite of their typically limited knowledge of source-languages, Asian Classics argues that popularizers produced versions more respectful of the complexity, cultural difference, and fundamental untranslatability of Asian texts than the professional orientalists whose work they were often adapting. The responses of their readers, likewise, frequently deviated from interpretive norms, and it is proposed that this combination of eccentric translators and unorthodox readers triggered 'flights of translation', whereby historical individuals can be seen to escape the hegemony of orientalist forms of knowledge.

Download or read book The Trade of the World Classic Reprint written by James Davenport Whelpley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trade of the World The Trade of the World, including as it does prac tically all the activities of the human race, is of a scope so tremendous in its broader meaning that to choose this title for a book seems almost pre sumptuous. In this volume no pretense is made of discussing the subject fully or finally; nor is it possi ble to particularise concerning more than a few of the most important or typical countries whose trad ings go to make up the enormous total. If, however, the reader may obtain a better appreciation of the common sense, wisdom, knowledge and courage re quired, not only of the individual but of nations, in seeking successfully a fair share of international commerce, the purpose of the work will have been achieved. That we must know a land and its peo ple before we can strengthen mutual bonds of trade and friendship, is fundamental, yet it is an axiom, the truth of which is often forgotten, ignored, or per haps even never realized. Successful international trading rests on bigger things than mere exchanges of commodities; these in their fullest development follow mutual knowledge and understanding.
